Puella Magi Madoka Magica 4

Oh boy this show is about to go places.

Madoka and Sayaka decide to back out on being magical girls since, you know, they just watch Mami get her head eaten. Homura is glad they did. It seems that she really regrets becoming a magical girl. She talks to Madoka about all of the people she has seen die and the tragedies that have happened. It feels like she blames herself for some of these, which I think is why she tells Madoka that her kindness could end up bringing greater tragedy.

Madoka gets herself caught up in a mass suicide ceremony involving Hitomi and gets trapped in a creepy labyrinth with merry-go-rounds and TVs laughing at her and trying to pull her apart limb from limb, to which I was all "Dude. What the fuck is going on here?" But Sayaka has a change of heart after her brother yells at her for tormenting him with music since he has a disease that won't let him play anymore (probably MS or something), and she wishes for him to get better. She's a magical girl now who saves Madoka. I guess Madoka will change her mind soon enough now, much to Homura's chagrin.

But now there's another magical girl who plans to kill Sayaka so she can take over the witch hunting in the town. Yikes, this magical girl business is serious in this show.

It's kinda funny that I'm a third of the way through this show and yet Madoka still hasn't become a magical girl yet. The focus with this show seems to be about the struggle with taking on this responsibility and the likely fate that comes with it. Being magical girls ain't fun and games in this hood.

Ah, the memories, good times, you are up for a ride!

[Gargantia] - 6

I don't find male-gaze camera work to be particularly shocking or distracting, but I was surprised by unabashed fanservice of both the dance costumes and the dancing scenes. Without much explanation at all Amy and her friends dress up in extremely risqué Arabian inspired outfits and do a sexy dance for everyone without really much explanation. I suppose it's part of the festival, or something, but they don't really try and portray it as a festive dance in praise of anything, with the camera either following the dancers breasts of their ass. I was just bothered by sleazy and unnecessary the whole sequence felt, especially as it add nothing to the story,

Now, later on
there's the dance scene between Ledo and Amy. I understand that, in principle, that was supposed to be a rather sweet and beautiful movement but I couldn't help feel that there was a disconnect between Amy's sweet and wholesome manner and the obvious eroticism of her uniform and dance.

I just chalk this up to anime being anime at this point. They can't help themselves.

That said, I almost wish the whole anime could just be them fishing and partying every week... instead of
evil space squids
.

These replies are making me want to watch Puella now. I've heard of it before, read it on Wiki that it was some award winning magical girl show and then dropped it because I'm not really into that kind of thing. However, it seems there is more to this show than what meets the eye. When I was listening to the OP, the top comments seem to say this too, and I was thinking whats the worse they can pull in a show thats aimed at young girls.

Anyway, I've decided to watch the show with my sister. I kinda need a cutesy show to relieve that exam stress.

If it was just 13 episodes of Amy doing Amy things it would be one of the greatest things ever.

Madoka was not aimed at young girls.

I think it is somewhat worth watching but is in no way deserving of any awards. Its quite flawed.

I wanted to check out the dub at least for a rewatch but that would mean committing and throwing down precious dollars towards it...so hopefully they put it on a streaming service or a tv channel here.

Yeah but there has to be context for this stuff. It's pretty hard to marry up the first two episodes of Gargantia with what's happened in the other 3/4. Well actually no. I guess it's not since it's meant to bring about a sense of daily life and normalcy to bring some idea of contrast but having butts and tits flashing all over the screen doesn't really help your cause - it gives the impression that their daily life is a little bit of work interspersed with a spring break-esque beach party.

I'm not averse to the style of fan-service but I don't get why it has to be in Gargantia presented like that.

Now I need to go save those gifs.

I expected this the moment I saw who was the character designer. This was inevitable and for many people, desired.
Besides, whether you think she is cute or sexy, Amy is the fucking best.

Well if we're going to establish Ledo as a character to even have any kind of romantic interest in Amy we kind of have to make him understand what the heck sexual attraction is :p

Yes, we know there were no dudes. that doesn't make it bad.

I dont think I ever wholly criticized it for that point, mainly for the sake that only five episodes were worth watching while the rest felt like they went nowhere, and then
best episode being just the AU one
if the whole anime was that it would have really been rather enjoyable.

You know, one thing about Gargantia 6 is that it put an interesting wrinkle in the whole "man vs machine" thing that it has been trying to do with the last few episodes. It's nice to see that they're trying to be a little more varied than having a simple binary between Ledo and his Robutt.

a peaceful, playful, colorful humanity in contrast with a high tech, warlike, serious, drab humanity. It works.

That too, but I was thinking more between Ledo going through his Mr. Spock/Commander Data phase and learning how to feel while his Robot constantly reminds him of his mission and being on "standby" as his primary objective.

This week,
you basically see that independently, both Ledo and Robot can't fish. One doesn't have the ability to do it, while the other doesn't understand why doing it the most "efficient" way is the wrong way. Together, of course, they are ultimately successful
.

Wouldn't mind another person watching Madoka actually. I was already told that there was more that meets the eye for the series, but I just didn't know what exactly it meant outside of darkness.

Anyway

Smile Precure 12

Reika the Robot and somewhat of a Candy episode, aka the only competent Cure on the team.

2SbaM.jpg
2SbfD.jpg

Reika is pretty soft spoken here. It's time to go to Osaka, or at least prepare for the trip at least, and Candy was rejected in order to watch the house because Miyuki is mean. Power ups ahoy for both sides!

The EDs are disappointing to me. Not because it's bad, but for the character specific episodes, they don't start off with that character looking into the camera and then jumping away. It's a missed opportunity to say the least.

I'm going to ship ReikaxCompetence.

Don't watch it with your sister if she's still elementary school age. Just a word of caution.

Sure, that's what I originally thought, but that's kind of like giving in and saying that anime is just going to be stupid and there's no point complaining about it.

Yeah, I think I'm a defeatist at this point. The way I look at it is like this - Gargantia's fanservice, while it might take away from the actual quality of that particular show, at least doesn't have any bearing on the shitontakuism-ness of something like Aku no Hana.

Perhaps the massively low bar set by SAO has also basically made all anime acceptable by comparison though.

I will say, you could argue that - if you want to give them credit - the male gaze shots were there to emphasize that this is the first time that Ledo has thought of the opposite sex as an outlet for his lust. Depends how much you want to apologize for the episode. lol

Woah and I thought it would be be Pg or something. Anyway, I looked at the ratings and its like a teen rating (only thing thats puts it in that category is the violence, didn't look at the specifics to avoid spoilers though) . My sis is 12 and I am sure she has watched worse stuff in terms of fear but dunno about the violence. Without spoiling it, how violent is it?

The Light of El Cantare
Gargantia 04:

This show is so much better when it's just about breezy cross-cultural exchange instead of trying to be anime Waterworld. Even if contrasting the ideological extremes of the group vs. the individual, reason vs. emotion, militarism vs. pacifism, etc. isn't particularly novel and I'd like to see a little more subtlety in this regard, I still think that the character exchanges are nicely done for what they are and if nothing else we'll get a competently-told story about Ledo growing as an individual.

I know that it's been said before, but this episode reaffirmed that the backgrounds and color palette are damned fantastic. It's like this sun-drenched dilapidated oil rig barrio and everything is so sprawling and vibrant and lived-in. It's visual porn for someone like me who really likes artistic photography of urban decay.

It's only a shame that even the apocalypse couldn't stamp out the bolo as a fashion accessory.

Then that's fine but It just feels an odd mix after the first couple of episodes of murder and lessons on morality.
Well, I haven't watched the episode so I can't say whether it feels out of place for me as well. It just seems to me that the show is still following the "Ledo goes from a bleak, strict environment to a freer, less structured environment" idea. The show moving from killing to partying just means that he has overcome his biggest differences.

Lol, I'm not saying that no one has anything to complain about regarding the fanservice. We all know why it's there. I'm just saying that the people who are surprised by the leisurely lifestyle of the Gargantia crew might have been expecting something the show didn't really promise.

Its not that it is particularly violent. Theres also no fanservice in it either.

Taking a small break from Smile Precure to watch...

DokiDoki Precure: 15

Boy, it feels a little jarring watching these in the same day. Anyway, Makoto acts in a movie, and Regina appears again.
I like that she doesn't need to wait for selfishness to surface, she can pull the latent selfishness out of people. No need to wait, attack on your own time
. That's something I like about Smile, so its good to see here.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S 6

No love for Misaka 9982. Not only has Seven Seas messed up and named her #9992 in the manga, but now J.C. Staff has made her the #9928 experiment as shown at 17:45. Why is quality control so hard to come by?

That's what you get for making a character's name four digits.

I can give them that, at least, for a couple of shots. They get those on the house. The other 30 or so don't really have any valid reason for being part of the show.

12 might be okay...

First Gargantia splits everyone over murder, now it splits everyone over sex, we just need to get some politics/religion in there.
It's not really sex though. It's like the 12 year old flipping to the bra and panty section of the Walmart flyer because that's all he can find or knows about.

I can give them that, at least, for a couple of shots. They get those on the house. The other 30 or so don't really have any valid reason for being part of the show.
Oh yeah, that's fair. As you said, the
champaign room/private show
thing could go either way.

Cool. My sis is pretty clever, so unless there are some deep psychological themes I'm sure she will appreciate it.

Nowhere near School Days level.

Ok, its just the description of the violence made it sound pretty damn violent, but I guess because the animation is not too detailed in such parts it must not be a big problem.

I'll start watching it sometime this week when we have free time.
