Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid 14

So this last episode is just something that happens and has no major bearing on the plot. The idea is that Tessa wakes up almost entirely naked in the Bridge of the TDD-1, with no idea what happened last night. She doesn't really realize this until she's in the Arm Slave Hangar, hitting on Sousuke while AL makes hilarious quips in the background.

The story unfolds that Mao got her drunk because it's Mao and you should know better than to ask. As Tessa tries to figure out what happened and where she left her stuffed Bonta-Kun, she also comes across Mr. Closeau, who is chasing down Kurz for tampering with his anime. In the show the scene Kurz added was of pigs, or is at least shown to be pigs. Super Robot Wars W upholds this interpretation of events, however in the manga, Kurz claims to have edited the scene to contain gay porn. There're some unfortunate implications there, I suppose.

Along the way we also are treated to things like Mao wasting millions of dollars in resources to program M9s to Tango, Mr. Kalinin using the power of SCIENCE! to recreate his wife's Borscht (the key ingredients are Miso Paste and Cocoa powder.)
Kalinin's longing for his wife, as well as his love of Sousuke and feelings of guilt for having failed to provide a good home for both of them are his driving motivations for joining Leonard in Sigma.
At the end of the day, Tessa runs off to confess her love to Sousuke just as he's boarding his flight back to Tokyo. Tessa says "You can blame it all on love!" and Sousuke tells her she shouldn't be so proud of her love . . . of alcohol.

This caps off FMP!. though I'll read through the manga again and then decide if I want to try my hand at the books. Show's kind of my happy place when it comes to anime, though.

Corvy-kun, how many shows are you watchin?

Hold on let me count. Now that I'm done with FMP, only 5. I'm on Summer Vacation, which is why I have the time to do this, although sometimes at school I used anime/movies/books/games as an incentive to do my homework. As in "finish this assignment, watch episode of this, do next assignment."

I'm watching 8 if you count Majestic Prince, Valvrave and Gargantia, but those are only on once a week. 9 if you're going to count Full Metal Panic! in that mix. Like I said, though, I'm on vacation, so when I'm not hiking with my friends or doing yard work, I have considerable free time.

All but the one that matters. :(

Which one is that?

Slayers 12

Remember kids, it is totally okay to have your heroine spam her supposedly most powerful spell at bandits if it is for comedic purposes. Oh man Amelia's English VA is so damn bad that I really may just have to switch to Japanese. Oh man.

So Lina thinks she's gonna break Amelia, but basically she's just over leveling her. Still, while Prince Phil is a Guest Character, Amelia will be team White Mage forever. It's sort of like teaching one of those black magic spells to Kat or Bow in Breath of Fire II.

Honey I Shrunk the Sakura 24

This is fucking terrifying, but look at how adorable Sakura is!

One of my favorite episodes so far. Loads of fun that included it's share of UWEEEEEEEEEEEEHs, and being shrunk cliches, my favorite being that for some reason normal sized character's voiced become deep as hell. Also TWIN TAIL TOMOYO which I hope she keeps forever.

Ojamajo Doremi 9

Well we learn how fairies are to be taken with you in crystal balls that only you can see, how Doremi is still incompetent, and apparently fairies wet the bed. She really is the most unluckiest pretty girl in the world. Hell, her fairy ran away, talk about loserville!

I think this was a parental guidance episode.

Just got done watching Jinsei Best Ten, Death Billiards, Little Witch Academia, and rewatching Aku no Hana 7 in succession. If I had needed a reminder of why I'm an anime fan, this would have sufficed. A great variety in subject matter and approach, and each beautiful and good pieces of storytelling in their own way. As long as stuff like this manages to come out of the industry, I'll be happy.

Short thoughts:

Jinsei Best Ten - Loved, loved the colorful art style. A couple clever visual tricks, especially the zipper motif. The scenario could have gone the "soap opera" route, as pointed by one of the characters, but thankfully it remained a mature yet light-hearted reflection on the passage of life and those moments in it which don't go the way we expect but leave their mark on us nonetheless.

Death Billiards - Great tension, sharp direction. I've always been a Twilight Zone fan, so I enjoyed that vibe. The young man was a real sleazeball. The ending may have been ambiguous, but I liked the message as I saw it:
Your life isn't determined by the environment you were born into; it's determined by the choices you make within and out of that.

Little Witch Academia - Everyone already knows about the amazing, cartoonish character and effects animation. Yoshinari did a really good job. The setting is superficially like Harry Potter, but the execution reminded me more of old-time Disney. I didn't like the intrusion of the RPG elements though; they were an unwelcome intrusion of the contemporary technological world into the fantasy setting. Also, I felt like this strained against its runtime; certainly it told a more or less complete story, but the characters begged for more time to develop, more mini-scenarios in which to shine, and the orchestral soundtrack in particular felt longing for an epic scope which the short wasn't quite able to achieve. It really feels like Trigger wanted to make a full-length film out of this idea, but they weren't able to get funding from anywhere so had to resort to using the Japanese government's money from the Anime Mirai program to get it made. Hopefully they'll get to expand on this someday.

Aku no Hana 7 - Still the best of them all.

The World God Only Knows II - 05

Keima turning into a cockroach had me in stitches.

And then they made it a 1-2 punch when a forest grew outside of his room.

Keima's finally breaking through his shell and seeing some character development. Yessss

Watch Macross already Corvo, I'm ready for your rant to my waifu.

I sold my soul to the Devil Gundam. Ain't no gettin' offa this train till we're at the stop.

Gun x Sword 9

Touching episode about Carmen and her back story. I must admit, I'm DYING to know who the Claw is, and what his game is, because I mean, there's been something from this guy in every town they've been to, and its evident something big is going on here, but what?

My guess is that the Claw IS Van. That's stupid and crazy but this is anime and stupid crazy revelations are the most important thing in the world.

The World God Only Knows II - 07

I love how you can totally tell the kiss is about to happen because of the music leading up to it every single time. It's really satisfying hearing it for some reason.

Also I love how Elsie is totally the "Moneypenny" to Keima's "James Bond" -- basically they have all these moments that show a potential romance and then they kill it. Elsie is so cute.

Cardcaptor Sakura 23

Tomoyo has a wonderful voice, and apparently Meilin is a
filler character, so ugh
. Loved how Kero just brushed Mei aside when she offers her voice up to get the clow card.

Cardcaptor ShrinkyDink 24

Sakura always wanted to live in a big house, and so her wish was granted. Lets just say... be careful what you wish for. Cute costume, along with a constant display of Tomoyo's fetish (along with dem twin tails).

Little being used so that way small food can be a gourmet by shrinking you? We've solved world hunger!

In the Cyberpunk thread someone mentioned Serial Experiments Lain as a Cyberpunk anime.

How does Anime-GAF feel about this series? Recommended?

Is it normal to be working ahead so much for a production? Since he said worked, I'm guessing he's finished.

Storyboards are pre-production, so it's not unusual. If he's directing the episode as well, he probably hasn't started yet. It was just a comment that he keeps working on the 7th episode of series lately.

The World God Only Knows II - Nagase Arc
This show has been amazing at getting me to really like nearly every single one of the heroines. Nagase was especially great, even if she's got the whole "hot for teacher" thing going for her (which in all honesty is kinda off-putting) Making her the absolute youngest helped things a little, I think.

I thought her story actually was pretty realistic, as I've had several idealistic teachers like her who wanted to create their own Dead Poets Society or the Freedom Writers, then getting shot down because not everyone can have great success like those stories. By the end of the romance I was cheering.

This was a great season. Looking forward to S3 later this year.
