Square Enix teasing their E3 booth

You know, I expect the PS3 to have the least amount of new mainline FF games and PS4 to have most in FF console history.

So 4 or more? I really doubt SE has that capacity...they'd pretty much need to release a new mainline FF every other year or so.

I wonder if SE will even make a new mainline FF MMO btw. FF XI came out in 2002 and FF XIV came out 2010. They shouldn't even bother till the very end of next gen or the beginning of the one after.

Why do you think we'll have more FFs on PS4? Is it because you think that next-gen is going to be even longer than this one or that Square will finally get their stuff together and can release games at a reasonable amount of time?

Probably the latter. I know their next gen engine, Luminous or whatever has been in the works for years now (unlike Crystal Tools, which was developed late in the game). And going off of the developers are saying, it makes creating the games.. easier? Pretty sure the same thing was being said about Unreal 4. or 5. or 6. Whichever one they're right now.

It's been hinted (and expected) that FFXIV will be going to PS4 and FFXV is coming to PS4. Since their new engine is easier to work with than the horribly hard to work with Crystal Tools (plus they developed the Luminous Engine before the reveal of the next gen consoles), I expect FFXVI and FFXVII will also be on PS4.

I count ARR:FFXIV as new though because it has never been released on a PlayStation console (even the Vanilla FFXIV hasn't been released on PS3).

There's a chance that there will be a gaf shaking bomb released this year at E3 from Square Enix.

FF VI ios.

It's going to happen this year pretty much no matter what but e3 would make the pain extra special.

Will be weird to have an action rpg for a main line FF, I just hope it still comes for PS3.

Well, FFXII is technically action-like because it was seamless and the characters could move around freely during battle. :P

The battle system and gambits of FFXII made it more of a snore fest since little interaction was required. I actually fell asleep a couple of times playing it :p

Actually, yea... I just remembered something that someone else brought up weeks ago.

Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to name versus as 15. I say this because that would essentially put three main FF's under the ps3.

ps1 - 7, 8, 9.
ps2 - 10, 11, 12.
ps3 - 13, 14, 15.

I mean, it falls in line with how many main FF's land on the Playstation consoles. Not sure if it's silly to look at it this way. Then, the "next gen" FF SE reveals at e3 can be FF16.

However, FFXIII has had two sequels which goes against previous traditions.

FFX also had a sequel.

So going forward, it might go like this

PS1: FF7, FF8, FF 9
PS2: FFX, FFX-2, FFXI, FFXII
PS3: FFXIII, FFXIII-2, LR:FFXIII, FFXIV
PS4, FFXV, FFXV-2, FFXV-3, FFXV-4, FFXVI, FFXVII

NES: FFI, FFII, FFIII
SNES: FFIV, FFV, FFVI
PS1: FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX
PS2: FFX, FFX-2, FFXI, FFXII
PS3: FFXIII, FFXIII-2, LR:FFXIII, ARR:FFXIV
PS4: ARR:FFXIV, FFXV, FFXVI, FFXVII, FFXVIII

PS3: FFXIII, FFXIII-2, LR:FFXIII, FFXIV
PS4, FFXV, FFXV-2, FFXV-3, FFXV-4, FFXVI, FFXVII

I think there being a third sequel to FXIII is indication that the FXIII trilogy is over (so Versus may not be affiliated with it) and that FFXV will not be on PS3.

What's the chance that this will be a betraylton again and show up tomorrow at MSs event? ;)

Probably nil.

After FFXIII, they didn't seem to care about JRPGs anymore and gave up on the Japanese market.

What if FFXVII was actually FFVII remake \ re-imagine and it will be released in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of the original game :p ?!

lol....

anyway, I think SE should do the smart thing here now and rename Versus to XV and make it a cross gen between PS3 and PS4 and release it Q4 2014.

Yea, thought so too.
But its just a bit curious they're teasing this so soon before the event.

If anything and at the most optimal situation, it will probably be a preview of Thief 4 because Thief 4 hasn't been announced for Next Xbox yet. Plus it's a Western focused title.

But it's most probably their E3 line-up reveal because it's about time that the companies reveal their E3 line-ups.

Chances for Versus XIII (XV) not being a cross-platform title are very little imho...

It's Nomura that we are talking about so the chance of it being cross-platform are next to none.
I thought Nomura can't decide such things? Must be the CEO or something, right?

Nomura doesn't get to decide to lose SE four million sales. If he has a hard-on for Sony as people claim, and I doubt he has, being on PS3 and 4 won't affect that.

Meh if they had much intention of making KH3 a multiplat game they'd have KH 1.5 multiplat too, seriously. It would make sense to put 1.5 on the Wii U too since other KH games are on Nintendo platforms, but where is that?

I'd be surprised if it's anything but PS3 or PS4 exclusive.

HD remastered collections aren't comparable to the next mainline installment of the series.

They're made with the intention of getting the series on one console. If they weren't going to continue the series on the same platform (or at least same line of consoles, ie. PS4) then I don't see what's stopping them from making it multiplat like the MGS collection or the DMC collection (albeit the MGS Legacy Collection is PS3 only, though their excuse is that MGS4 isn't on the 360 and would take up too many discs). If KH3 actually is a current gen game (PS3) it'd be safer to make it exclusive than a next gen game too, probably.

1. There have been several PlayStation exclusive HD collections that the next entry of the series has gone multiplatform. For example Tomb Raider, guess who developed/published that?

2. HD collections are niche, many fans who own the games won't be double dipping. I'll probably double dip for FFX/X-2 on Vita, but not KH.

3. Mainline entries have a much higher budget and require as many sales as possible to see the benefits. If they can get it working on Wii U, it'll be on Wii U.

4. The rumors show an almost identical platform for development between Xbox and PlayStation next gen. Little reason remains not to release on both, outside moneyhatting of course. Assuming Sony has already tied up XV for a time, as per rumors....

KH HD was primarily for the Japanese market, there's no worth to putting out WiiU or 360 versions. It's the same thing as Ni no Kuni, it's exclusivity in the West is just a result of the rival consoles viability in Japan.

1. I'll give you that but Tomb Raider has been multiplat before then, while KH has traditionally been exclusive (excluding later ports/remasters)...

2. Then it would make sense to make 1.5 multiplat. Not every Nintendo fan will have played the other KH games. But they're putting the series together on one Sony console.

3. For FF, yes. For KH we don't know yet. There isn't a precedent. Theoretically they could've gotten 1.5 on the Wii U but didn't. Putting KH3 on an Xbox console seems unlikely considering no other Xbox system got KH, and we're talking about the finale to the story arc here. And for Wii U, I don't think SE even sees much worth in it right now, and didn't really bother with the Wii that much either.

4. Same goes for PS3 and 360 which is why we see most console games multiplat but there's still a lot of exclusive to go around, though particularly from Japan. Even if porting is even easier, does SE think porting is worthwhile, or do they think the main fanbase will be on a Sony console anyway?

What makes you think that? The collection includes a superior version never released in the western markets + one game that never released in europe.

I can imagine fans eating this shit up.

Also I dunno about niche. KH collection is the best selling one in Japan. It passed 200k a while back. For a rerelease of old games that doesn't sound very niche at all.

KH's biggest demographic is the West btw. FF is equal but leans more towards the West.

It would be amazing, but I think I would finish with FF. I mean I expected it on PS3 2 years ago. Cancelling it would be less insulting to the fans I think.

Not releasing game is less insulting than releasing it?!
oh boy

I don't see why people still believe Versus will be any good (if ever released).

What SE can announce at this E3, realistically speaking? Or will they just show what's already announced?

Your reasoning is?

Yeah, finally lol. I actually don't think Stu is far off. They've added some stuff for Western releases for these games before but the Final Mixes have always remained Japan only, and these games have usually been announced at TGS, a Japanese event. 3D being the only exception. So I don't think it's a stretch to say that collection is made with the Japanese market in mind. The collection does include stuff some of us have never seen outside Japan (or in EU, in Re: CoM's case...) but that's just a result of them wanting to get the 'best' versions of the games together and we're finally getting Final Mix (and EU is getting Re: CoM) as a byproduct of that.

1. It's hard to say, there haven't been that many KH installments, certainly not up to Tomb Raider's level. Using your argument though, they should have made the HDmake multiplatform.

2. Are they? Are you sure they aren't just making easy money?

3. You could be right about the story aspects, but then they shouldn't have moved some parts of the series to Nintendo and smartphones. I just don't see SE missing out on the extra revenue and sales.

4. SE thought porting was worthwhile this gen, what do they lose from porting? Less than ever before if spec rumors are to be believed. What do they gain? Sales, perhaps less than the main platform, but not insignificant.

1. Right.

2. If they just wanted some quick money, they could've ported it to more consoles instead of keeping it exclusive, no? Actually if they wanted KH3 on Xbox, that would've been a good idea.

3. The series being spread out is an issue that Nomura has acknowledged but the Remixes are fixing that.

4. You can apply that to 1.5 Remix pretty much...

Weren't One of Square Enix's Japan teams supposedly working on some super cool new IP?

For PS3/Vita. Probably canned though...
