Square-Enix trying to sell off IO Interactive (Hitman)

What in the actual fuck is Square Enix doing? First United Front now IO, my heart can't take this.

Well, different cases. United Front was an independent studio

Massive Entertainment (Division devs, owned by Ubisoft) are right across the pond from Copenhagen, they'll most likely poach IOI's AAA talent now.

Lots of people I know are sad today. Looks like it came out of the blue for some employees.

IOI is not closing (at least yet)

They should have done a TF2 promo for Hitman like they did for Absolution and include all the previous games.

That promo for Absolution at least got people interested in the series again even if that entry isnt exactly what people wanted.

For the first few months, if you were playing online and the servers fucked up, which happened quite often, you'd be booted back into the main menu. Same thing if anything happened to your internet connection or whatever. Nothing of that run was saved unless you did it yourself. So you could potentially lose lots of progress because of the game being dumb.

And you could play offline. You just wouldn't earn anything, nor would the unlocks carry over. So you might complete a level, but all that fancy shit you did matters for nothing because you need to be connected to the server for it to be validated.

Phil is full of shit. Nier sold well. Nioh sold well. DOOM sold well. You can make a case that the latter two had an online element, but it's largely a single player experience.

Of course he partly said that because their own SP games didn't do too great, but I still think he has a point. I am not surprised Doom did well, that name alone means something. Did Nier and Nioh really do well? Didn't know that, that's good. But a shame games like Dishonored 2, Prey, Deus Ex MD didn't and I didn't even mention Sunset Overdrive or QB while not perfect still really enjoyable.

Really hope IO finds a good home because I'm sure they can make something really similar to Hitman, the things that made it so damn good..... It Just can't be using Agent 47 sadly though. Fucking hell! :(

So they sold 600k units of Hitman, yet it's the reason they made a loss of roughly 5 billion yen?! This industry sure is in a problematic state...

they sold more than that actually, the ~630K number is Steam only

not sure if that is full season or only intro pack tho

Doom did not sell well enough to meet Bethesda's expectations. Online is gonna happen. This is whats selling the most. This is whats defining this generation.

I can only suppose the online part made them lose some units in the first months.

But ironically, 600k is also the amount sold on Steam of another well received stealth-action game, Dishonored 2. And that one didn't have the same level of online DRM.
So maybe that's the market now for these types of games. As pitiful as it is.

IO was poaching talent from Massive just last year.

Absolution was pretty much a Splinter Cell game...

But yea, Ubisoft or maybe Microsoft would be a good fit with the online/seasons model of Hitman.

And? Them making a Splinter Cell game under the Splinter Cell name, won't annoy people expecting a Hitman game.

Btw, talking about Prey, this is even more depressing, because not only is an incredible well dsesigned game, because it feels like System Shock 3 in every aspect, but hurts seeing a lot of reviewers not enjoying it, probably beacuse many of those reviewers are modern gamers that don't understand this genre.

It hurts....in many ways, because if Prey was a 1999 game, it would be one of the contenders to the GOTY award easily.

This!

But isn't the majority of the reviews positive though? I saw it stands at 80 now. Should be higher but that's definitely not too bad. But I agree man, there is very little, well nothing so far for me, wrong with this game. Interesting story with mysteries that keep you playing and guessing what is happening next, really cool enemies. Yep I actually like their Mimics, very nice level design with lots of reasons to go exploring and so on.

Prey must be played!

Could be a good thing for IO long term if they can stick out this rough patch and find a buyer.

Square enix is a shitty publisher and the more studios escape to better managed companies the better.

I want Ubisoft to buy them and give them the keys to Assassin's Creed. Seems like a perfect fit.

Assassin's Creed would fit the "Hide in the open" concept of Hitman perfectly tbh.

To the people crying about its episodic nature, why not just purchase the complete season?

Hitman is the 1 game where episodic release actually works.

I played almost 100 hours of it. If the game came as a complete package that number would probably be in the 20s.
Amazing fit.

what would this mean for the IP's associated with IO? would they be able to work on a new hitman for a different publisher? or have they lost it now? what likelihood is there of square themselves making use of it?

this is some seriously shitty news tbh. yet another unique game potentially dead. i mean, they could always make a spiritual successor with another bald guy called agent 37 and call it silent assassin, but it's all kinda of bullshit that a devs mainstay bread and butter IP can be lost so easily due to acquisition.

Bethesda has to see that those $20-30 doom sales with positive impressions mean a high quality sequel with better multiplayer and co op would sell much better at launch.

I feel like wolfenstein is the same way - soft launch sales, but great reviews and word of mouth lead to long tail sales at lower price. That builds a base of peoppe who remember a positive experience with the previous iteration.

SE own the Hitman IP, it stays with them when IO go.

People are just sayin it was probably a turn off and I do think that played a part of it.

Also I hear no one talking about this game outside of this forum.

Wow. Force the episodic format on IO, then don't promote the full release and then get rid of IO for mistakes you've made. Sounds like some classic Eidos bullshit, alright. Let's hope IO don't end up like Core Design.

Seems like TR did fine though

From a commercial standpoint maybe. From a creative integrity standpoint, Tomb Raider has been dead in the water for years.

And you think that matters? It's a business. TR sold well for SE they stated this.

My immediate thought is that Warner Bros. would be the best fit for IOI. But being an AAA studio in Denmark is near impossible as-is, so I wonder if anyone will want to buy them. I guess being turned into a support studio for The Division or Assassin's Creed is also a very real option, since Ubisoft seems to be focusing on bolstering its numbers, but this would be a very expensive support studio.

Hope IO lands on their feet. Considering how shit Absolution was the fact they bounced back with Hitman 2016 which was on of the best games of the year.

I personally felt the episodic nature of that game helped more than hindered. The always online stuff was crap though.

I never said it mattered to Square, no. But you were replying to a post that suggested the Western side of Square was getting the shorter end of the stick and neither that post nor yours specified that that only referred to the commercial side of things so me talking about the games' quality is perfectly valid.
