STAR CITIZEN, Chris Roberts' (Wing Commander) New Game [$25 million funded]

Hmm, decided to kick in a bit more. I now have a 350r and Starfarer.

Starfarer will be the money maker and fund any other ships. Depending on how they handle reputation, I might wind up transferring the Starfarer to a second account and using the 350r for shadier business.

Oh yeah, another update I had forgotten about. Apparently you can hire NPCs to use your ships. So multi-boxing may not even be necessary.

Not bad, I got a StarFarer myself. Nice ship with lots of upgrade potential... Just not a Dogfighter.
But I do see it with 3 additional turret and a torpedo launcher for some military use in the future... who knows :)

Anyone else feel like some of the crew capacities seem a bit off...

The Idris seems like it could fly a lot more people than 10. That thing is huge!!!

Well, being a Star Trek fan, if you look at the Enterprise-D, it can fit a lot more ppl in the bridge than the number of ppl in it. All these computers must be for something.
I'm pretty sure you can carry more ppl if you want (say for boarding) it's just that they dont do anything on the ship in the meantime.

At least, that is how I see it.

I've heard of the game before but I've waited till now to jump in, especially with the deadline on the limited-time ships.

For "general" play, should I go with the Hornet package or the 350r ?

Or is there something I'm missing about the Freelancer?

I am still trying to get caught up with the wealth of info on the game; I just know I want it in my veins.

This game keeps getting better and better, the *only* 2 things that I do not like out of everything so far are G-Force blackouts and Character Permadeath.
Note that the G-Force open an interesting door for future alien species having different tolerances, ummmm...

I also own way to many ships now, but once I get to try them out I'll probably melt those that I will chose not to use (or gift them to friends).
I am simply amazed they made it to 12mil, I never would have given them a chance in hell of reaching 8mil in the first place, and it keeps going, heh.

On a surprising negative note, eversince they changed their website (which is really awesome, and will get better no doubt), I just cannot open it up at work anymore as the adress of it starts with "forums." which is immediately caught and blocked by the filters here. This sucks to no ends, but then again I've got NeoGAF to give me something to read. I just hope this thread turns into what SWTOR had last year, that was great.

I thought the character permadeath sounds cool, since your ships and stuff live on, you don't really lose much and it's just your avatar that goes in to a hall of fame type record chart.

I also liked that they weren't going to litter the campaign with autosaves and if you can't finish a level without dying at the end, then tough luck, you have to start it over from the beginning. Adds a lot more tension to the battles when you're flying on borrowed luck, and need to get by a group of fighters or something.

Hornet and 350r are really specialized ships, for dogfighting and speed, respectively; for a general starting vessel I would go for a Freelancer, Aurora, or 300i/315p. From there you can build up your fleet with the more specialized ships.

That's something I hadn't really considered. What do you think of a 350r + Aurora LX combo?

That's probably the limits of what I'm going to spend on the game. Especially if Rift support is awesome.

This is probably the best value starter package - includes an Aurora LX. ($45, only available until end of day July 6)

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/145-advanced-starter-package-lti

Locks down your "veteran backer" account status and you can reclaim it toward another package later if you want. (Up until Nov 26)

I got that on my second account. Veteran backer status includes no hanger fees on your home planet and a repair bot.

In his case, buying the lightspeed package and the Aurora LX add-on would be the best value; same cost, $145, but you get more stuff with the 350r's lightspeed package than the advanced starter package. Specifically, you also get the OST, 2k ingame credits, and some sort of special racing suit.

I backed this game early last year, and have no regrets even now. Got my hornet :)

Just wanna say this though, am I the only one who thinks that it's going overboard with the transactions? It seems they keep on selling new stuff (e.g. ships and skins) for money and more money, and even "special" updates ??Jumpgate require a monthly subscription fee.

I understand where Chris Roberts is coming from, and this is a backer project, but why all the transactions? Seems like it's getting overboard like some EA game or something. I backed Planetary Annhilation for example once, and they never asked for anymore after that.

What is GAF's opinion on this? Just curious.

It's a fine line. It just depends on how difficult it is to actually obtain in-game and whether you believe in the belief that time is money.

That being said, with all the money being spent, they will be a LOT of pissed off players if this crashes and burns like Hellgate: London.

From what I can tell, this is only available to those who backed the project before the new site went live.

Nope, I bought it for my second account yesterday and it has the "ORIGINAL AND VETERAN BACKERS REWARD" and "HANGAR FEES REWARD" stuff in the account's list. Account was registered July 4. I think the same July 6 grace period applies.

As far as the funding goes - at this point going from 50% to 100% crowd-funded means that Chris calls all the shots and doesn't have to answer to any investors who might otherwise compromise the game to make cash grabs. (e.g. "I just don't see the ROI on all this landing gear animation crap")

I believe the people who are spending the most money and buying things like jump point etc, are very familiar with what is going on in the game, probably watch the hangar weekly and read forums there, so I doubt they'll be taken by surprise with the final game. With the daily updates they post on their site, jump point almost sounds redundant, really just an extra service to the die-hard fans.

Chris Roberts knows what he's doing and you buy in to this game knowing it's him who is making the calls. I get the feeling that that factor alone is going to make this a drastically different game than your average MMO.

I think if one is worried about all the options then they are over-complicating things for themselves... just buy the basic package and keep it simple. The other stuff is there because there is a huge demand for it... see how quickly the project is funded any time new things are sold. The vast majority of players won't have dozens of $200 ships at launch, and I'm positive the game will be just as enjoyable for people who go in at the base level as it sounds like it's more skill based than money.

I just reclaimed my original Scout package + LX and bought an Arbiter package (325a) + Electro Hull. This game sucks the money out of you.

That's interesting. I gifted a package to a friend a couple of days ago and he didn't get the Vet backers rewards in his hangar page. Maybe it only works if you pay for it directly and not through gifts.

I know that feel. Really tempted to do something similar. Or just buy a 300i in addition to my LX. Decisions decisions.... well at least I have a lot of time.

Oh, weird, contact them about it I'd say

Edit: or they can melt and rebuy the package and maybe get status that way. Was it a package that includes alpha/beta access? I think that's required.

It was actually the $30 package without alpha/beta. I'm not sure why alpha access would be a requirement though because folks who bought the same package before the new site got the benefits. The reason I gifted it to him is because he doesn't have a credit card of his own, so he can't melt and rebuy it directly.

Thread title is outdated.

I'm still rocking Aurora LX/M50. Will probably swap my Aurora package for the 300i or 315p. Then I'll upgrade it to a Freelancer variant package. Or Constellation. Not being part of a group yet saved me from buying a, Retaliator.

If this keeps up they'll reach their goal(20 mill) by the time gamescom starts.

wow, it's flying. I take back my former pessimism. Of course some of this is people trying to get in before veteran backing is up.

In just four days, Star Citizen fans have raised another million dollars. We gave you the goal of becoming the first fully crowd funded AAA game and you are delivering faster than we ever imagined possible. The entire team at Cloud Imperium Games is grateful for the trust the fandom has placed in us; we will deliver an experience worthy of your incredible support! Check back later today for a design post featuring your first look at Star Citizen’s economy system.

The $13 million goal adds frigates to the roster of player-flyable ships and introduces one very cool new element for gameplay: the Command and Control Center. Found as an optional seat on larger ships, the C&C lets you coordinate the battle between multiple ships: let your friends or NPCs who are flying escort know where to go and what to do.

Next up is the $14 million goal, which adds another great design element we’ve been thinking about as well as a making-of documentary and one player-demanded feature we hadn’t originally considered:

$14 million
Hibernation Mode: for the explorers out there, we will add the ability to save and resume while you are out in space. When not in combat, power your ship down, hit the bunk, and exit the game safely until you can resume your journey.
Professional-quality feature-length “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary film.
A fourth landout option on Earth! Where will it be? London? Berlin?

Per tradition, we’ve also de-classified the $15 million goal. We had thought it would take months to even reveal it, but now… who knows how quickly the community can get there? Tell your friends about Star Citizen!

$15 million
Additional flyable ship class: escort carrier
The Upgrade Handbook: an extra 42-page manual that walks players through the process of customizing and overclocking their ship systems! (PDF free to all backers before $15 million)

Good thing today was payday x_x

I know this is a space sim. But are they going to include gun-play for boarding parties, raiding, and pirating? It is CryEngine... so it's not like it would be hard to include.

They haven't gone into much detail (I think) but the plan is to allow boarding of ships that are capable of having multiple people, friendly or foe. I think one of the kickstarter rewards was actually a crossbow wasn't it? You'll be able to walk around in first person in your ship, on planet locations, and when boarding other people's ships. I'm sure there might be more locations i'm not aware of but they haven't gone into too much detail on those aspects.

The economy page they talked about when the 13 million mark was made earlier today is up with a short video.

So do you think this game will be as bad as it looks?

Would you guys say you really regret supporting this, or just sort of regret it? Would you say Chris Roberts is the worst developer of all time, or just one of the worst?

I have a regular 300i that I got with the bounty hunter package. But I want another ship to compliment my 300i. I want to be self sufficient but also able to chip in and help people when needed. What do you guys suggest I get?

Are you suggesting I'm the worst at asking question, or just one of the worst?

I claim drunk shenanigans.

But with your assertions that we think this looks bad, that we regret backing (which I haven't even done), and that Chris Roberts is a bad dev. I'm going to assume you're invoking a sort of rhetoric to shame us for being excited over pre-alpha marketing campaigns and nebulous promises.

If that is the case I would say I'm taking this for what it is, and hoping the devs the best. Otherwise you should call Gromph and have him drive you home.
