Star Citizen hits 400 million USD in funding!

I dont have anything positive to say about this game, so im just going to post this picture of a space kitten and be on my way.

im hungry now. thank you.

This game had early production in 2010-2011. When 360/PS3/Wii were in their prime and Kinect just launched. Xbox One/PS4 hadnt released, and even leaked specs probably werent even out yet. Wii U wasnt out either. Skyrim, Minecraft and Portal 2 launched. That's how long ago this game started dev.

It's now 10 years later, skipped through the entire Xbox One/PS4 era (including mid gen systems), and Series SX/PS5 have been out a year already. In 2010-2011, Sony and MS probably hadnt even started R&D on Series SX and PS5 yet.

Wiki.

Star Citizen is a multiplayer space trading and combat simulation game that is in development. The game is being developed and published by Cloud Imperium Games for Microsoft Windows. A spiritual successor to 2003's Freelancer, Star Citizen is being led by director Chris Roberts. The game was announced on October 18, 2012 through a successful Kickstarter campaign which drew in over US$2 million.[3] Pre-production of the game began in 2010, with production starting in 2011.
Just realised, in a few months we'll be further from the SC kickstarter than the kickstarter was from Freelancer lmao

Anyway I am just happy that I didn't pledged any money although I grew up with Wing Commander and love the series.

But for that I pledged money for Space Venture from the two guys from Andromeda, not knowingly that they seem to be the laziest developers in the world. They say perhaps once a year they have only to finish one thing, but strangely enough it's the same thing as in the last update and then they go radio silent again…

Well...

Even if it is not a scam... They took on too many over ambitious ideas that not only need to be developed n implemented, not just also be combined into cohesive set of gameplay systems that coexist in full harmony but also all of it need to be actually fun to play.

They should've started with much smaller scale n feature set n then go from there... But at this point it is this insane monstrosity existing in a constant development hell, logistical issues n surely some financial corruption along the way.

But still...
None of it explains Squadron 42 10 year development.

At this point it seem like devs spent lots of money without being able to make what they developed into functional game.
Higher-ups got fucking rich
and 42 is the new Cyberpunk disaster in the making.

Have no idea why anyone ll be dumb enough to invest their money into this.
Especially when there is an army of "believers" that ll do it for you.

It's always the bloody same when a SC thread pops up, same old it's a scam, it'll never be out bla bla bla... We get it now fuck off and create a SC Is a Scam thread and keep all the bollocks in there.

I come into these threads not as a player but as someone who is genuinely interested in what they're doing and how the game is progressing (albeit slow as fuck) but still the "Premise" to me sounds cool as all hell and it still looks incredible so sifting through the shite to get the snippets of info that interests me is becoming a chore especially when some of the genuinely interesting posters are too busy arguing and defending themselves from attacks.

So what if there are players out there throwing $$$ at digital spaceships theres other people throwing $$$ at Japanese denim or $$$ on bloody pushbikes, everyone has different interests and hobbies and therefore likes to blow disposable income on said hobbies, I don't judge you cunts buying expensive hentai pillows or little anime dolls so leave these cunts alone with their little expensive starships and let the rest of us read about how the fecking game is, as the bloody game changes almost daily..

/Bog rant over, now I've just taken delivery of a rather nice new Alienware Laptop with 3070 and all the bells and whistles and rather coincidentally SC have release a free trial for a week or so, now as a complete and utter newbie, is it just a case of signing up, downloading and away you go or do I need to watch some YouTube's first? I.e. have they got a fully fleshed tutorial/starter section sorted or is it straight into the game kinda thing?

They have, and SC is not that sort of game you enter without knowing anything about it. Also group up with others, You can even enter some discords and Org. Also Morphologis has a great player guide for 3.15:

You can also follow boredgamer on youtube.

I don't think it's fair to call this a "scam", because the intention was not necessarily to sell something they were not planning on making. But it's basically a dysfunctional project that is clearly going nowhere in terms of actual content and development compared to any normal industry standard (both for time and costs), yet both the developers and the players refuse to see it this way and just keep on going. The developers keep making money out of it, so it's all fine for them, and several players will never accept this could not be the game they hoped for and invested a lot of money in, so they'll just keep throwing money at it rather than look at the wider situation in a more detached and objective way and cut their loss then and there.

It's a similar situation to YandereDev and a couple other strange cases, people are basically sold on the "dream" behind it all, and fail to realize that at the end of the day it's either just a lost cause that refuses to die gracefully, or really really not worth it in terms of cost compared to any other video game in existence.

I think at this point it being so unfinished and lacking in general systems is more of a bonus than a detriment, because people who are sold on the "dream" will fill all the gaps in their mind with their hopes for the best possible outcomes, rather than face an actual product they have to come to terms with. If it had all of its intended systems but they were buggy and unrefined, I think a lot of people would perceive the lack of progress on them year after year more than if they mostly remain this nebulous marvelous thing coming some day in the future.

SC threads always gold, same people are stuck with the same misinformation for year, acting they are watching the development "very very closely".

Get over it dude, it's not your money. worry about people who smoke all day or drink all day and spend their money on shit like that.

Don't worry, I will pray for your family too.

Don't worry. They'll figure it out. They are going to up the concurrent player count from 50 to infinity, like EVE.

gEDmMxV.png

I wish them luck, EVE has been in a constant state of technological evolution in order to make things work when 5000 thousand players decide to have a go in a system.

It boggles my mind. I bought in way back when and even I feel scammed and that's with a $25 investment. There needs to be a point where they stop the feature creep and start actively delivering on promises.

That won't ever happen when you have folks like those in this thread so desperate to defend and celebrate the most basic design shit that got slowly rolled out.

not a scam IMHo, but definitely a mismanaged project, at least in the terms of actually finishing development..in terms of making profit he probably made even too much.

also a warning tale about what an overambitious developer and an absent publisher can do to a project

Somehow the fact that someone managed to hook up and get married in the time it took these developers to work on this game makes the whole thing even more hilarious.

I bet that by the time you guy will be sending your kids to school they're still gonna be working on an unfinished roadmap.
Lol you're probably not wrong, I've had two kids who're now in school during the same time period that Star Citizen went from the announcement to current day 😅

Projecting isn't healthy, you know?

I'm not the one "suffering" here.

I spent a moderate amount of money I definitely can afford for a game I enjoy. Oh my, the pain! 😂
It obviously bothers you. You keep defending this game in every thread.

Enjoying the game is one thing. White knighting for it in every thread is another.

You say it bothers him, but the same usual suspects keep coming in this thread for years getting triggered about what others spent.....yeah it really bothers the hate cult more than the other way around.

Didn't you notice? Most people in threads like this are not the backers, so that says enough about who is triggered.

Funny that you guys are acting as if you're not spreading the same nonsense for years, but backers need to shut up?

wauw...

Did I say people need to shut up? By all means, drop another 3K on this embarrassment of a game. It's your money, spend it the way you want.

This one fits you more. Give me just one reason why the haters can't do a normal technical discussion about when entering these threads for years, but only spreading the same shit over and over?

I think you hit the nail on the head.
It's kind of the Google developer model syndrome: new tech and new projects lets you progress in the corporate hiearchy, but after launch no one really plans on polishing and supporting their projects.

I wonder if the dev team is going into some kind of similar spiral here, where all this funding will "enbale us to do all kinds of incredible things!", but when the time comes for the boring part of the technology (polish, bugfix, implementation, actual gameplay design) it all falls apart in favour of the next big tech project implementation.

There are a few things that really stick in my memory - one is that for a long time you had a tendency to fall through the geometry to your death - presumably because the physics was starting up before all the collisions were loaded. This could be largely mitigated by using a fast SSD, which presumably allowed the collision data to be loaded more quickly, but it was really something that needed to be properly fixed - if your code breaks when something adds I/O latency then your code is broken.

I can't remember how long ago this was - but I logged back into the game because they had added a train system and I thought it would be interesting to have a look at it. It was actually a pretty nice train system - but while looking at it I found that "clipping through the floor" bug was still present. This seemed to me to be a perfect illustration of the problems with the development process - people were adding whole new subsystems to the game while not fixing basic game-breaking bugs that had been present for several years.

Maybe this stuff is fixed now - honestly, it's been so long since I logged in that I have no idea what the current state is - but the long term persistence of critical bugs like that does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the development process.

You mean discussing a game I enjoy in a discussion forum I enjoy? Oh sure, I must be so incredibly desperate 😂

Considering you get triggered every time someone shits on this game........yes!

You do understand that the tears and teeth-gnashing of haters are absolutely hilarious for those who are actually playing and enjoying the game, yes?

You all spend your time dropping ludicrous quantities of shit on the work of over 700 developers (seriously, you should be ashamed), and yet, absolutely none of it sticks. The game continues to become more popular and continues to receive increasing amounts of support. Absolute losers like Derek Smart (look him up lol) are the funniest, but unfortunately he hasn't ventured here yet, which is surprising, because he likely spends half of his life googling places where he can shit on SC.

It must be really frustrating for ya'll to have found a game against which irrational internet outrage and FUD don't work at all, and as someone who has seen the livelihood of many ruined by it, it's very, very sweet to see for me. 😂

If it's so hilarious then why are you constantly butthurt by it? If the game is so great then you wouldn't need to defend it from "scam" claims which you always do in these threads by beating your chest about how much fun you have with the game. I don't need to justify how much fun I am having with Halo Infinite to Sony fans.

I paid £30 for it years ago and seen the game evolve.
Have I honestly been ripped off?
yes. You are supposed to get the product that they've promised initially years ago, not to see it evolve into something else that hasn't even been completed yet a decade later.

If you translate it into buying other kinds of products receiving this kind of treatment, people would have called it a scam, but gamers are a different breed.

Which is why they got a lawsuit for selling jpeg ships that isn't even modelled or in game yet. But gamers keep on buying, so they keep on selling and stalling....

Why oh why are people still investing in this? $400m and all they got was a lousy t-shirt (sic).
This game isn't gonna be out in the next 5 years.

If it's so hilarious then why are you constantly butthurt by it?

Butthurt? What part of mocking you and the other haters for being butthurt by the fact that this game exists and its support continues increasing means that I'm butthurt? 😂

If the game is so great then you wouldn't need to defend it from "scam" claims which you always do in these threads by beating your chest about how much fun you have with the game. I don't need to justify how much fun I am having with Halo Infinite to Sony fans.

Translation of the above: "don't dare to counter the bullshit I say in a discussion forum! If you do, you're proving my point and you're butthurt!" 😂

The funny part is that you probably don't even understand how utterly irrational what you say is. This is a discussion forum where people discuss games. It's its purpose. If you say something utterly silly about a game, chances are someone who knows better is going to let you know that you're saying something inane. This doesn't mean they are "butthurt." You're welcome. 😂

I'm sorry not sorry if the fact that I counter your silly arguments annoys you, and I'm sorry not sorry for slapping my enjoyment of the game that is the topic of this thread in your face. If you think that's somehow evidence that the game isn't good or that I'm "butthurt" then the joke's on you.

If there's a thread about a game in a discussion forum, chances are people who enjoy it are gonna come say something positive about it. Nowhere in the topic was mentioned, "negative circle-jerking only." If that's not ok for you, you'll just have to deal with it or get your own blog where you can write whatever you want without anyone telling you how inane it is. Just make sure you lock the comments. We wouldn't want your shaky perception of the world to be challenged by those wackos who dare like what you don't, right? 😂

In the meanwhile, let me reiterate the concept for your sake: Star Citizen Exists. It isn't going anywhere. Tons of people enjoy it and it keeps improving with every quarter, earning itself more players in the process, and there's not a thing you can do about it. Its support is continuing to increase and it has consistently for years. It already made another $3 million since this thread was posted. So it isn't $400 million. It's $403 million. Deal with it.

Nice. Here's hoping that we'll have a chance to play Squadron 42 before you'll have a chance to pass Werther's Originals to your grandchildren.

Yup! 😅
Where is that game anyway, wasn't it supposed to be out like 5 years ago? They've shown trailers as if it's coming soon but is there even an estimated release window?

Butthurt are the people here, continuing posting the same old shitty youtube videos and still stuck in the "5 years ago" mindset of SC.

To give you an idea, here's a CIG employee panicking when his coworker speculates that release may *only* be 5 years away in a recent stream :messenger_loudly_crying:

If you want to understand just how long these people have been grifting money from gullible fans, then think of this...

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced to the public 1 year after Star Citizen Kickstarter began and yet managed to release before this game.

Star Citizen launch date? Not even Chris Roberts knows that one.
