Star Citizen's Arena Commander is free to try until March 15th (PAX East promotion)

Can I just fly around in space a bit with this "demo"?

I was really interested in Star Citizen when it was originally announced (some 2 years ago?) but it got way too complicated (ultra-hardcore spaceship simulation) with some offensively ridiculous money grabbing (ships being sold for well over $500 to $1k+) for something that can't even be experienced yet.

But the graphics are sogood.gif and I just want to fly around on autopilot or something.

Is this game any closer to being a game? I was very excited when I heard about it, but it seems like it got bogged down with convoluted marketing. There are a thousand ship packages, and I don't know what I have to pay for and what will be in the game. Let alone what the game actually is now, with seemingly endless announcements paired with a lot of "hopes & dreams" it all just seems wildly confusing at this point, I can't decipher what's what at this point. Is there even a release date at this point, or a schedule for when something significant is going to happen? We're still just ironing out the dog fighting stuff at this point, right?

Sorry if this post seems confusing, but it's just because I'm rather confused myself!

Yup. It's still downloading for me, but from what i've read we have access to Arena Commander as well as a trainer ship to fly around. So yeah you can do free flight and whatnot. You can also walk around in the hangar or something. I'm not too sure of the very specifics, so maybe someone with more Star Citizen knowledge can come to the rescue.

To be honest i have no idea. I've been holding off completely until i know for certain what is happening with the game. I'll most likely jump on it when it releases if it's any good, but for now you may as well try it out for free which is what i'm doing.

I'm downloading now, although in the list of things that come with the package it says there's no ship included...

"You currently have no ship that can be viewed in the Hangar."

... so we'll see if this actually works.

Yeah i noticed that as well, but according to the page:
With this pass you will be able to download and install the game, walk around the Hangar Module and sit in an Anvil Hornet F7C trainer ship that you can then take into flight in Arena Commander.

I think it'll be fine.

When the game is released as a complete game, it will be a one time purchase like any other game and ships and whatnot will be purchased with the in game economy. This is a point of confusion that seems to come up all the time. It's something they need to address better because the it's not getting out there.

Thanks for the heads up, I've been interested in trying this out, but not 100% confident this game is ever going to be released at this point. I loved the old Wing Commanders, so I hope the game comes out, and I'll most likely pick it up on release though!

It doesn't help that their press coverage is typically about people buying ships for ridiculous prices and not much about the game.

I'll definitely give this a go though, keen to see the differences between it and elite.

this is correct. i've been interested in what i've seen from this game but going to the website is utterly confusing. there's ships, packages and modules, all seemingly bought separately. if i buy a ship with access now, does that mean i own the game? i own just the ship? is the game going to be sold in module-sized chunks or released as a full thing with all the modules? what the hell is in the packages that cost 5,10 and 15 thousand dollars?!!!

>.< srsly, I looked the game up awhile ago and saw all these ships for sale with real money. It just killed my interest in the game utterly.

Its 'closer' to being a game, sure. It started off as just walking around a hangar. You can do basic flight combat and races now. But as for it being a full game, that's a ways off still. This game wont be done til 2016 at the least. Next up is the first person shooter module, which is apparently coming this summer, I think?

Yes, but it's still very much WIP. The end of this year is when the more complete modules start coming out (such as the first episode of the single player campaign!)

Right now there are two aspects that are available:
- Hangar -- This is where you go to just check out your ships and start Arena Commander
- Arena Commander -- In-fiction, it's a simulator. There are a variety of game modes to play though, and includes both co-op, PvP combat and racing modes.

For the schedule, this is currently what's on deck:
- FPS Module (End of the month) - First FPS gameplay
- Multi-crew ships (middle of the year) - First gameplay which will allow multiple players to be on a single ship and take different stations (I'll be captain, you'll be gunner, someone else will be in engineering, etc)
- Squadron 42 Episode 1 (end of the year) - This is the first 10 missions or so of the single player campaign! Estimated around 10 hours of gameplay.
- Persistent Universe Alpha (end of the year) - First glimpse of everything coming together for the main game (Star Citizen itself).

Official 1.0 release is tentatively scheduled for end of 2016, though whether they hit that date is dependent on the above schedule, and the feedback they get. They don't have a publisher, so if they release something and they decide to rework it to make a better game, they can.

Now, the reason they can pull off this ambitious schedule with multiple releases in quick succession is that there are a LOT of studios they've created who work on different portions. For example, Santa Monica is what mainly works on Arena Commander, Austin studio mainly works on Persistent Universe, UK office works on Squadron 42 and Illfonic (contracted studio) works on FPS module. There are a couple of other studios such as a web team, AI team, etc... Overall there's around 250-300 people working on the game.

For buying the game, you have basically two options.

1) If you don't care about getting access to the beta and only want the final game, get this for $30 (final price of the game will be $60 so it's 50% off): https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Aurora-MR

2) If you do want access to the beta, you can choose between two ships and it costs $45. Choose whichever one looks cooler to you.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Aurora-MR-AC-Starter
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Mustang-Alpha-AC-Starter

They sold out of alpha slots a while ago, however, the way they are handling it is that if you can buy a "pass" to that module for $5 to handle additional server costs. The two packages above have the Arena Commander pass already, so you can play everything that's available right now. FPS Module may require you to buy a pass however, but it remains to be seen. However, as I bolded, those packages include beta access, slated for the first half of 2016 so you can just wait until then to start playing as well.

>.< srsly, I looked the game up awhile ago and saw all these ships for sale with real money. It just killed my interest in the game utterly.

The ships being available at different tiers is literally just an extension of the Kickstarter rewards that they did. They were crazily successful, so it makes sense to keep it going because of how ambitious they've been able to make the game. When the game launches, you will not be able to buy ships with money, and will need to earn it in-game by playing. Suffice to say, you can just buy the cheapest package available (above) and you'll do just fine in the game.

A few weeks from now! They wanted to release it during thr presentation I think.

excellent. thanks a lot for shedding some light on what's what man. i'm downloading the trial thingy now and then if i like it, i'll grab one of those. you the man.

I'll give this a try. I have always been super hesitant on this game as the ship package thing seems super weird, if I understand it right you have to buy different ships with real money?

Honestly Elite Dangerous seems to do what I want out of this kind of game, but I am still curious of this. I'm downloading this now to give it a try.

How is the space flight model compared to Elite Dangerous? I really love Elite Dangerous's model, and am wondering if this compares or is more "video gamey".

They are going for "real" or "accurate" space physics in the flight model, although I'm not sure if that means true NASA physics, if you want to think of it like that. So the thrusters all fire in the appropriate direction depending on what you are doing at the time, as well it's not "insta-change direction" and off you go... if you get your ship going fast enough there is a certain forward momentum that your thrusters need a bit of time to over-come so you have to sort of "slide", or think of a car on the road "drift" through a turn, and that's in a single seat fighter craft. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the much larger multi-crew ships turn, like I'm guessing you will basically have to think ahead and plan your turns. I must admit it took me little bit to get used to as it certainly is not "arcade" like in its presentation.

**edit to add... oh, the money you spend on ships is more of a "pledge" to help with the costs to develop the game, and you get the ship at whatever pledge-level fits your budget. With the basic game package mentioned above, all ships will be available in-game without the need to spend more real money, so there is no obligation to spend more once you have a game package... or just wait until it goes retail at full release if you don't like the idea of making a pledge for a game very much still in development.

Awesome, that sounds similar to Elite Dangerous's model as it does the same thing.

Another thing, does this have an option to disable "flight assist"? In Elite, flight basically applies counterthrust automatically when doing things. For instance, if you roll to the right briefly, then stop, with FA on it stops, with it off, you keep going until you input the other direction. This is useful to turn off in some combat scenarios.

**Edit for clarity... the short answer is yes, flight controls are customisable in the mappings.

Yes you can go full battlestar galactica and drift around forever unless you apply a counter force.

delete your USER folder. Does that help?

Yep. Worked. Can't beleive how laggy this game is. Or is it just me ? I run lowest setting, lowest resolution and the input lag + inertia while walking/looking around is just... horrible. Can't even start to pilot and aim with this lag.

What is your rig / resolution? Turning everything to low mid game doesnt adjust the shadow settings (which are extremely taxing) due to how they are set on level load. It needs a game restart or level reload.

drop in MSI afterburner to check out your Fps. keep in mind, the game is built for graphics cards which dont exist and is also in pre-alpha state.

Yes, it does. There are actually several different flight assists in the game and they can be toggled on and off at will, allowing you to do stuff such as spin around and fly backwards or sideways while looking in a different direction.

Here's an example of the flight controls from someone's profile on the forum. The "Decoupled FCS" and "IFCS Safety" are the flight assists (edit: there is also "COMSTAB" which I don't see in this profile, maybe he's labeled it Relative mode). I just found a really good text explanation on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/27ka60/psa_star_citizen_flight_school/

Thanks that worked! :D I was always curious how this or Elite Dangerous play but I knew I couldn't be invested enough to justify paying money so this is great. I wonder how my 7970 Ghz will fare though. Also, If I only have the choice between keyboard and mouse and a Dualshock 3 or Dualshock 4, which should I pick for the controls?

Try both! :) Really, though, the gamepad controls are pretty good. I don't think I could play this with just a KB/mouse, but lots of people seem to love it.

Star Citizen and Elite are incredibly different, especially at this stage: Elite is much more of a finished game, whereas SC still has a bit of "tech demo" feel to it. Every release gets further away from that, though.

Alright thanks I'll try both then :) I usually prefer gamepads for anything to do with flying but seeing the complex controls the mouse might or might not be better here. And hmm I see, I'll see how well the current version of Star Citizen is then, from what I've seen I prefer it but Elite also seems very intruding.

Elite has an *amazing* sense of presence. I'm using a Thrustmaster t.16000m and Logitech G13, and the feeling of accessing the navigation panels, setting in a course on the galaxy map, sliding the throttle up, etc... not to mention the approach --> entry --> landing process into the stations - it really nails the "feel" of what we imagine space travel to be like. As it stands, though... once you get past that, the central gameplay just isn't as compelling to me, at this stage.

What SC promises is all that, plus more. At the moment, it's just dogfighting, which is the least-interesting part to me. Being one of the early backers (from October 2012), it's been awesome to see the progression from concept to the Hangar Module to what it is now, but I'm really waiting for the Persistent Universe (or perhaps Squadron 42, the single-player game) to get back into it.

This is exactly what I was looking to hear, thanks! I'm glad to hear that things are being done. I'll probably wait too see another module release before buying.

>.< srsly, I looked the game up awhile ago and saw all these ships for sale with real money. It just killed my interest in the game utterly.

It's crowdfunding. The ships are basically different pledge teirs with different rewards. Just like all crowfunding really.

You don't pay for the ships, you pledge money for the game and get a ship (and game) as a thank you.

Yup, you can go into Arena Commander, and choose "Free Flight." That'll let you fly around the multiplayer maps and see how the flight model works, etc. There's not much to do at the moment (seeing as AC is a "dogfighting simulator" set within the game universe, so turning off the other ships is like running around a Doom map with no enemies,) but it's a good way to see what it looks and feels like.

I think that they've done a terrible job at communicating the financial commitment necessary to play. As others have mentioned, dropping $30 gets you the whole thing, when it's done. Unfortunately, what's historically been on the front page is the current ship sale or other promotion, or the crowdfunding total/goal. They've finally rectified that - the "Fly Now" button shows you a $45 package that gets you in today, but for literally *years* that hasn't been the case.

Furthermore, until the recent "ship rental" program that allows for trying out ships via in-game credits, the lack of balance between the $45 Aurora (designed to be the Space Ford Escort) and the $120+ Hornet (designed as the civilian version of a Navy fighter) gave it a real "you *can* play for $45, but you'll just get rocked by people who spent more" feeling.

I saw quite a few VR videos of Elite and I can imagine, that looked unreal good from a immersion point of view, if I want to play Elite I want to play it in VR! :D

And as a Freelancer fan the single-player of SC interests me greatly too, I still have to try the testing phase now tonight :)

There's really a digital package for $15K? God damn, man...

Edit: Saw this was an extension of pledges... still a lot of money, who in their right mind has that lying around?

Star Citizen is a perfect storm, in terms of crowdfunding:

  • Fans of the Wing Commander series, who are now old enough to have more disposable income
  • A charismatic, ambitious creator in Chris Roberts, who hasn't put out a game in awhile
  • A focus on "pushing the high-end PC experience forward," right as PC gaming is regaining popularity
For some of the backers, they saw Wing Commander as kids, and were blown away by the cinematic style. I know that when I saw the "run to board the ship" sequence in a computer store at age 12 or so, I was convinced that gaming had reached its apex. The power of nostalgia is strong enough to get more than a few people to pledge way more than they'd normally spend on a game, in the hopes of recreating that feeling.

I'd say that this was a bit more...understandable? when the project was just starting, and nobody knew if there were enough interested people to make it happen. Putting in $15k would make you feel like you were directly helping it become a reality. Now that it's clearly tapped into something, the big-ticket packages seem less important, and more opportunistic.

Gave this a shot, cross-posting my thoughts from the Elite Dangerous thread:

I tried SC briefly....I am most certainly not impressed. Granted I know it isn't a finished game, but I don't like what I see.

- The UI from in the ship and in general of the game is way to "HEY WE'RE IN SPACE, SPACE, SPACE, SPACE! LETS THROW A COMPUTER VOICE THAT NARRATES EVERYTHING." I don't like it, it rubs me the wrong way, but maybe it's a matter of personal taste.

- The flight model feels arcadey as all hell to me, and I do not like it. There is like, no resistance to the controls at all. From a dead stop you can pretty much do a 180 so damn quick. I know they explain this with the thrusters, but this is a MASSIVE FUCKING SPACESHIP, not a bird in the sky.

- It doesn't perform too well on my box either, but that isn't really fair criticism as the game is still a long way from release.

All in all, I wlll still keep an eye on it, but so far it doesn't hold a candle to Elite in my book.

It's actually the other way around.

SC is featuring an actual Newtonian flight physics and Elite is using a simplified version.
You can stop quickly because the manoeuvring thrusters start pushing the ship in the opposing direction (and you can see them doing it).
The manoeuvring capabilities are also highly ship specific. The Hornet is the premier fighter so it must be agile. But bigger ships or ships with weaker thrusters behave very differently.

So is it just the two drone levels with the one ship with only dual lasers?

No, at the moment there are the two maps, playable in Drone Squadron (bots), Spectrum Match (multiplayer), and Free Flight modes. There's also a racetrack, called the Murphy Cup.

The ships you have available will be dependent on what you've pledged for, although CIG has made different ships available to all on "free weekends."

Edit: I am totally wrong! It looks like access from this code is limited to the single-player, if numerous reports are correct. That's a bummer, but makes sense - their servers are likely taking a pounding from the recent update, etc.

hey, i've downloaded and tried this out. it's looks awesome although a bit empty feeling. one question though. i can't launch into the spectrum mode of the arena commander, only the drone match. is that a limitation of the PAX code? i tried deleting the USER folder as posted online but that didn't do it for me. another friend of mine using the same code has the same issue, just looking for extra confirmation.
