I like a lot of the ideas that go into Star Trek V and I like Kirk playing the cynical guy among everyone else who's marveled by the idea of meeting their maker.

Kirk straight up questioning "God" is fucking great. Trek V (along with the first movie and Generations) would have made excellent TV show episodes

Concept of the movie was great. There was so much junk (useless Klingon antagonist, Sybok, the whole neutral zone planet elements, smaller budget than normal, general incompetence etc) that got in the way though.

The core of the movie was exploring somewhere no-one thought possible. Capping that with camping trips with "family" in Yellowstone was perfect. It's the Trek movie that probably should have been one of the best, and it completely fell apart. The Alpha Protocol of ST, so to speak.

Had Paramount remained insane and let Roberto Orci direct this movie, we probably would have gotten an awful, awful movie. Like franchise killer awful (*cough* Blade Trinity *cough*).

I am glad Paramount came to their senses before it was too late.

You can enjoy First Contact if you abandon the entirety of Picard's characterization and several key events that occurred in the TNG universe after Best of Both Worlds. In the end, First Contact suffers the fate of all TNG movies; Trying to make an action movie with a cast and a franchise (at the time) that was unfit to do action movies.

5 is a Shatner masturbation project, much like Nemesis was for Spiner and Insurrection was for Stewart.
I guess it says something that Nimoy was the only one who didn't try to push himself in the movies he had control over.

TNG movies are pretty funny. Generations had the closest characterisation to the TV series. First Contact was the closest to being a great movie. Insurrection had the closest story and plotting to the TV series. Nemesis was the closest to actually looking like a film.

Movie is so fucking overhyped. Like probably the most oberhyped movie of all time. No way it approaches the quality of the TOS episodes, it's slow, dumb, predictable and the "kirk is old" angle has zero weight to it.

Can't believe this movie is beloved, I guess it's the memes.

But no, I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater and I like it because it's a fun romp that's actually written and performed better than it ever needed to be. It's a filler episode turned into memorable popcorn flick.

I certainly don't hate on TOS, it's still my favorite Star Trek even against TNG and DS9, but WOK just had a different energy than TOS without throwing it under the bus.

Yeah, no. Its one of the most boring, overrated films I've ever seen.

Plinkett has the ability to destroy any movie in existence. I wouldn't judge a movie solely based on one of those videos.

Probably a good descriptor for it. I have a hard time usually explaining why I don't find it that bad in comparison to the on-the-surface less offensive and bland TNG movies (Generations and Insurrection especially), and I think this is it—it actually aims for something, and for all Shatner's weaknesses as a director he was given probably the shittiest scenario to make a Trek film ever, from writers strikes to following on the heels of IV, to production issues.

Hopeful about this film. If the reviews keep up I might go see it this weekend.

Having a single controlling voice to the Collective is fine, but that she turns out to be so vindictive and petty seems totally out of character with the Borg—she's manipulative to get what she wants, but the Borg seem like a force that's not about anything personal, it's just business when they wipe out your world.

I generally hate how Red Letter Media has become tantamount to unassailable gospel, though, instead of just being treated as the single critic voice that they are.

I just watched this. I absolutely loved it. Best Star Trek film for me so far. Some of the hand to hand action scenes were cut too fast but overall this was amazing. Damn I didn't expect to like it this much.

I felt that the Queen added a nice hypocritical taint to the Borg that before wasn't really explored. Honestly, before the Queen the Borg were boring. The whole force of nature thing was sort of already dampened by Locutus. Having the Borg being controlled by a vindictive individual made for an interesting dynamic, its why I actually love the way the Borg are used in Voyager.

But like I've said before, I've never been a fan of anything Star Trek aside from the Abrams films. Despite constant attempts by my other friends to get me interested in the "Real" Star Trek, as they call they them (You can guess what they think 09 and ID).

I just don't find Star Trek interesting, never have. Just feels way too cheesy and preachy to me.

Yeah it's pretty good, also that twist at the end. It will keep your attention and has really nice nods to the past. And the send off to Nimoy is really touching.
