So uhhh what do I do to get some more unique missions aside from the episodes? I've been playing the episodes and then a borg attack or other pve fleet thing until I level up and can get to the next episode mission........

The explore X and do 3 missions can be pretty shitty

Those sound like repeatable missions, not the episodes. You shouldn't keep replaying those until you have nothing better to do. I pretty much have only been doing Episodes and have had no problem leveling up just on those.

Anything labelled PvP or Fleet Action or Exploration are not episodes, and are meant to be repeatable for grinding purposes.

Episode missions typically come from Admirals only. Open your Journal and look at the Episodes to see where you actually are in the chain and do the next episode.

Other than the Episodes, do the User Created missions for unique stories. In the Journal under the "Available Mission" tab, on the left is a tab for User Created or something that lets you choose to start one of those. There are a lot of really creative missions in there.

After watching the Zero Punctuation review of TOR I realized something else I like about this game: no quests based on "gather 7 of this drop that only has a 15% drop rate"

So everyone is telling me in-game that you only need to subscribe for any amount of time, and as long as you gain a particular gold member perk (such as retrain tokens, extra inventory/bank/boff/ship slots), you'll keep them even after you revert to silver member. Anyone know for certain if this is true? My bank is so full of junk that I don't feel like having to move around or sell later.

TOR doesn't really have those. Any quests to gather anything are generally automatically giving you the drop like Warhammer did it. All my time with the game, only one quest had npcs that didn't auto drop the quest requirement, and it was a 50/50. He was surprisingly semi positive on his review of it but he did get several aspects wrong or seemed to be him making blanket MMO statements that don't fit the game.

User missions are great, sadly they are not good for leveling up at all, but can understand why they wouldn't allow it as they could easily abuse the system with custom missions.

Yes, I know all that

I had the 20% boost for 8 hours so I keep having to do stupid grinds to level up after episodes

So this is a followup to a weeks-old wondering, but I think I get now why people newly installing before F2P had installations that seemed so much smaller than mine: the on-demand patching, where you download the latest versions of areas as you arrive. I'd never messed with the Options menu in the launcher before a few days ago, but I see that if I turn that off it wants to download a few more gigs to consider itself fully up-to-date.

I have a weird little complaint about this game: The soundtrack is awful. It's clearly the same guy that did the music for Champions Online. Dude just phones it in, uses these stupid orchestral hit things that really bother me for some reason. Awful stuff, and it isn't very Star Trek.

Yeah I'm going to make a Star Trek mix on spotify or something for that very reason.

Oh, and thanks for letting me into gaffleet, Shouta! (wherever you are)

Other than that, I think the game's pretty nice. Is there ever a reason to party up beyond just doing it for the hell of it?

That's why I love the fact they included a music player option so you can do your own customized soundtrack through winamp or whatever

Yeah, pretty sure this is true. I have 2 chars I leveled to VA early last year before I got bored and quit playing and they still have everything they earned from back then. Cryptic's stated goal is that whatever a Gold (subbed) player earns, they keep even if they revert back to Silver (F2P). Given that and the speed at which you can level a char to VA a one month sub to earn all the unlocks isn't a bad deal especially given what you'd end up paying for it all in the C-store. (Also especially if you can pick up a boxed copy from Amazon or some place for like $7 which includes a 30-day sub.)

If that's really the case, then that makes the Alienware code from a few days ago pretty awesome and valuable for people who will continue to play. People like me. I hope it's true.

EDIT :::::

In regards to this, I was reading the STO forums. It costs Dilithium to buy a new ship at Captain and Rear Admiral:LH levels if you are a F2P? I just got my new ship token like normal and went on about my business. Didn't realize they cost anything. Having the code made me oblivious to a couple things then.

Thank god I hit Captain and Admiral before the F2P went official...paying Dilithium for a ship at those levels, phyuck awff

You need dilithium to buy a new ship other than the one you got for free. It's not too bad as you can earn Dilithium at a decent clip every day. Also, Odyssey is out tomorrow too so.

Stumbled upon a pretty funny difficulty spike today -_-

Playing on normal through the episodes and usually I don't have to think that much to breeze through the content. Not today. A reman cruiser had it out for me. Died three times and had to be extra careful when doing strafing runs. After that it went back to being easy again.

Strange. Do you have to team up for later episodes?

Hmm, I'm playing a new totally F2P char and all my ships up to RA have been free. However you only get 1 free ship at RA, Lower Half; used to be you'd get another one at RA, Upper Half as well. As for the VA ships, yeah you're gonna have to buy one of those if you want it.

I don't care about getting a free ship at Upper Half cuz it was only 5 ranks away, it should be a free ship every 10, so when you get to Vice Admiral they should give you one for having made it that far... but in F2P, they wouldn't...the cheap bastads

The difficulty is really mercurial in this game. On one mission a single Cardassian vessel could blow through my shielding with a single volley of torpedoes even on normal, requiring a patient battle that must have lasted 20 minutes. On another mission I could easily defeat two Cardassian vessels at the same time on advanced difficulty. I don't know if others are experiencing the same thing, but for me it's unpredictable.

It probably wasn't torpedoes but more like Feedback pulses, I hate those fucking things that are used a ton by those Galor class ships

Well I've seen those things on multiple missions, and their power always varies. The defensive capabilities of the ships always varies, even when it's the same class of ship.

How are you supposed to load music into the player, anyway?

I personally use winamp (yes, still), have it open beforehand in the background, load the game, click on the arrrow in the menu, load music player, it will load the song that is the last song played in your mp3 player software, you have to manually forward or backward through the list unfortunately.

I previously tried that with two different media players, but I just discovered that I have to enable it through the options menu. I guess that I'm restricted in my choice of software.

Today is STF day and STF Cure is giving out more Encrypted Data Chips than normal. i've collected a ton today already, I'm up to 21 EDCS and 10 Rare borg Salvages that are gonna be used for my Odyssey, I think.

Started this a few days ago. This is my first large F2P MMO, and I have to say...this is the way it should be. I don't feel that nagging pressure that I need to play or else my sub goes to waste. It's liberating.

First time I had a huge borg cube mission, chills went up my spine.

This just might be my favorite MMO ever.

For assignments, I just blew 10k credits on a "Banking Conference" and got almost nothing out of it?

Should you ever spend credits on assignments?

Yeah, that is an underlooked advantage that F2P games have - even though you can end up spending more money than a subscription game, it's far more relaxed, since you can spend it on your own pace, rather than just for time.

You'll eventually find yourself with a glut of EC from selling off unneeded loot. 10,000 seems like a lot in the beginning, so you could probably hold off on those missions until you have more. Some assignments will also require various commodity items as well.

I have a character made back when I had a subscription and it has the full size inventory still.

If you hit a milestone level (10, 20, etc) while subbed you get a respec token yes.

I don't know if everyone has this, but my account has 3 character slots, maybe because I paid for the game originally even though I never subbed past the first month.

However, new characters I make have the half-size F2P inventory. I really don't mind though, all I keep are the commodities on my personal inventory and crafting materials in my bank. Any item is either equipped or recycled for Energy Credits or donated to the Fleet Bank.

Is there any good party content in this game?

If not, I may not stick with it. I'm really exhausted with MMOs that don't encourage being social. It's a pretty good game in a lot of ways from the few hours I've spent with it, but not good enough to essentially be a single player experience. It's not worth putting up with the little weird things MMOs have to do in terms of design if it's not really encouraging multiplayer anyway.

I treat this game as an epicly large single player game and put up with MMO quirks because there is no other game based on Star Trek that includes so much of the universe, and no other game really offers the very Star Trek feeling ship combat of this game.

I pretty much ignore all of the ones you spend credits on unless it's a trade mission where you have a chance to receive a ton of Provisions or some other type of item for it.

My current ship. I finally got an appearance-altering piece of gear (Reman shields). I guess this will be my primary until I feel like spending money on a VA ship. Odyssey looks nice, but I'm not big on cruisers.

Are you guys actually finishing the main story missions this fast from starting at F2P launch?

I still have 6 of the 27 missions left in the Klingon Front storyline and I'm level 24. So I still have the full 18 Romulan Front missions, 15 Cardassian Front missions, 6 Borg Front missions, 4 Undine front missions, 6 Breen Series 1 missions, 5 Dividian Series 2 missions, and 6 Romulan Series 3 missions.

I was a subscriber back when this thing first launched and made it up to Commander doing some missions here and there, but most of them after it was announced to be F2P

Ugh, I misclicked and ended up with an assault cruiser instead of the RA escort I meant to click

I opened a ticket but if they can't do anything then oh well, at the speed I'm blowing through this game I'll be VA in a few days

I wonder how many days my alienware sub is still good for

At least you got the Assault Cruiser instead of the Star Cruiser, that would be even worse coming from an Escort since it turns even slower.

I played a lot of the early missions in open beta so I could just skip most of the story for those. I also read fast so, heh.

Space definitely looks nice in this game.

Space would be really great if it would have real obstacles and stuff in it. It would be pretty fun fighting in a dense asteroid field if those asteroids would be actually dangerous. I guess that's the crux with space mmos in general, you have the awesome possibility of reliving all your Star Trek/Star Wars/etc space opera fights, and you just fly circles around your enemy in a giant empty box with a speed that feels like walking would be way faster. Oh well. I wonder why the original Star Wars MMO thing didn't go the f2p route, It was very promising when I tried it, shortly before it stopped.

There are some hazards in space. For example, some systems have explosive gases you can use to your advantage in combat, and that you need to be aware of so you don't get hurt by them too.

Zzoram

Yeah one place, the Briar Patch, otherwise every other space map no space debris is harmful in any way.

Send the suggestion to Cryptic. Maybe they'll include harmful space obstacles in a future mission.

Do any of the user created missions make use of space hazards?
