He's pal with the directors, if I recall. He also goes into movies having already decided how he'll feel about them.

I usually check out his take on things and then expect the inverse. It rarely fails.

You really don't read him enough if you think he's a friend of Josh Trank and a complete contrarian. Most of the criticism I read from him is pretty well-founded, even if I sometimes disagree.

Take your favorite movie of all time, any movie, and you can and will find people who hate it or deem it mediocre. Hell, you can do this with any work or form of entertainment.

Though of course, that's not to say it isn't a good idea to keep your expectations reasonable ;)

1. 2001 - I don't know anyone else personally irl aside from my parents who understand this movie, muchtheleless like it
2. Lawrence of Arabia - No one I know has managed to stay awake for the whole thing
3. The Lion In Winter - No one I know has seen this at all

I'm thinking you're probably right

Not going to say much till I see it again but rest assured THE FORCE AWAKENS is the best STAR WARS since 1983...maybe 1980.

Not even that, at yahoo's home page they reveal a major spoiler if you scroll down a bit. Time for media black out I guess. It's like the time I was watching some outdoor nature show but somehow they spoiled a death in GoT.

Guess I'm steering clear from using any search engines for the next two 1/2 days.

Wasn't Revenge of the Sith also the best Star Wars movie since 1983 (Or even 1980)?

Can't believe I'm at the Star Wars premiere!!!!!

What's interesting to me is that "it's the best since Jedi; perhaps it's better than Jedi?" was mentioned often by critics when Revenge of the Sith was released and now I'm seeing it said for TFA. Funny how there's probably going to be no questioning that TFA surpasses ROTS, nor the slightest suggestion that ROTS may have surpassed ROTJ.

Not that I personally think ROTS came anywhere close to surpassing ROTJ, but that was definitely a popular statement among some critics in '05.

I'm really curious as to what people thinks makes a story "dumb" or "smart", since I often read that JJ's stories are "dumb"
I have no clue what constitutes a "dumb" story. I've seen people call Fury Road's story dumb because it's very simple. I've seen people call other stories dumb because they're very complex.

J.J. nailed it. #StarWarsForceAwakens is wonderful.
.

I missed the red carpet as friends wanted to hang out but as soon as the film was over I started checking my phone like crazy for reaction tweets. lol

RoTJ isn't a particular high bar to begin with.

Promising but the fact she now works on Star Wars IP surely makes it almost mandatory to be positive. Maybe I'm cynical haha.

You're right, I probably don't. And I may be mis-remembering things, I'll admit, but I thought I read something else aside from his review of the movie where he more or less tried to defend or paint the film in a more positive light.

Regardless, I do disagree with him enough that I certainly feel he's contrarian-esque, especially when he goes out of his way to be the devil's advocate for whatever reason.

EDIT: Patton Oswalt's tweet is very reassuring. I just want this to be really good, so anything above that will be gravy.

This is why it's so pointless to argue over opinions about The Force Awakens.

We can't even get a consensus on whether people like ROTJ or not.

I don't disagree.

I just find it interesting that the one thing I remember the most about ROTS reviews is being said again, verbatim, a decade later.

this is all i care about.

i try not to let random tweets/reviews colour my own perception. if you go in with the line "mediocre story" or whatever constantly repeating in your brain, it's going to be harder to enjoy.

This is a great question. JJ is often accused of leaving "plot holes". What many don't understand is that plot holes are vital and essential to making a movie.

In a magic trick the magician uses one hand to distract you while the other hand executes the trick. There is a set up and a payoff. The trick is great at the end if you don't see the result coming, and you are paid off for investing your attention. Movies are the same way. The director pulls on your expectations and uses the audiences blind spots to set up various elements of the script.

JJ loves doing this, some claim to a fault. I think you could take any of the OT Star Wars movies and pick out their "plot holes", but what fun would that be? If a plot hole is egregiously apparent then that's a problem. But if you don't think about it until two weeks later then it was a successful film, in my opinion.

Edit:
It's a space adventure movie, we don't need a damn David Lynch script

Ewoks, Bond villain stupidity, how Star Destroyer and Boba Fett are sent off, amongst many other things. It is not even particular good by Star Wars standards.

*shrug* I'm not really interested in having this discussion. Sorry you don't much care for it!
