No, I don't understand Korean, but I was a big fan of the Korean scene before SC2 was introduced. Actually, sometimes I wish I did understand Korean, so I could write up a case study about how they fucked everything up. I don't really participate in this thread, so I understand if you're skeptical. But if you're wondering where the predictions come from, I'll give you my line of reasoning:
Prediction 1: STX (the company) is fucked, and everyone knows it. Furthermore, they're don't have a consumer-facing business like KT, SK telecom/group, Samsung, CJ, etc. and have no real business reason to be involved in PL in the first place. After all, PL is just a vehicle for companies to promote their products and services to an audience - there's no admission charge, not that much merchandising, etc. So once the season is over and they can recover their deposit, they're out - the creditors sure aren't going to let them spend money in this way. Only people who are ignorant about the situation would have expected the team to continue in its current form. Now Kespa has been running the sponsorless team 8 for ages, so it's not like there are many companies knocking down on their door looking to get involved. So when Jin Air shows up, it makes no sense for them to pick up team 8, when the team that was STX Soul also needs a sponsor and is performing much better. The only reason they would agree to take team 8 is if they could raid STX for their talent as well, otherwise they're a sucker who put their money into PL only to take the worst team.
Prediction 2: PL has been performing poorly in the domestic market for quite some time now, yet still bears most of the expensive cost structure from the days when it was a successful vehicle for companies like SKT, KT, CJ, and Samsung to promote their products to a large, young audience. They've already taken some desperate measures to try to revive the fanbase, but it hasn't been working, and now it's LoL that has the large, young audience nowadays. So those companies buy their way into that scene, and predictably, a LoL PL is being formed. So what do you do with the SC2 PL? Ideally, you'd just drop it like a rock to immediately eliminate all the expenses involved, but that does your reputation no good. So you try to reduce the cost burden as much as possible. The effects are already visible - lowered production values, shifted to less valuable timeslots, reduced salaries and team rosters, etc. Now, with the loss of more teams (will Woongjin survive?) and problems also plaguing teams involved in GSTL, it makes sense to merge the leagues, and both parties are desperate enough to consider it. Kespa even gets to slough off the cost of production to Gretech, who do have a reason to stay in the business because of all the international subscription revenue. Gretech also has an incentive to try their best to keep the esf teams alive even though most of them are running on fumes, because if the esf teams fall, Kespa will have Gretech by the balls for GSL, their moneymaker (even though Kespa themselves aren't in a good situation). But Kespa needs to pretend to give a shit about the entire SC/2 PL that they built, so they'll alternate holding a PL of their own along with GSTL, just like how OGN pretends to still give a shit about OSL, when The Champions is where the money's at. I also expect the same long delays between seasons that the OSL experienced.
