'Starting in January 2026, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog. We may still provide titles that can be playable on both PS4 and PS5 consoles after this date.'

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Remember when PS+ had 6 monthly games? You could get lucky and get 4 or even 5 PS4 games if they weren't available just for Vita or PS3.

Seems that Sony wants to go back to 2 monthly games, ignoring the fact that PS4 userbase is massive and that PS5 is backwards compatible.

Yeah, kinda dumb. PS4 has thousands of games that can be used to bolster the sub lineup.

This seems like they're gonna reduce the number of games notably.

PS+ used to have a Call of Duty game every year. Fun times.

?

Games leave PS+ all the time.

Duh, but completely unrelated to these news.

I guess it makes sense.
Will suck for people on Ps4 which at that point will have to pay $80 a year for just multiplayer.
Also make me wonder if we'll still get 2-3 Ps5 games or they'll use this as an excuse to hand out fewer games on Ps5 too.

?

Yes but I don't think this announcement means they'll remove all or most Ps4 games from the service.
Rather that new games that get added next year will primarily be for Ps5 only.

Yeah they're not just gonna remove all of them at the same time, just that they'll either add very few, or none from next Jan. And once the ones already on are removed, they're probably not coming back.

They just don't want to be obliged. They will still offer PS4 games.

I can understand but i dont at the same time.
You still have primary PS4 gamers paying for that sub and they should get their free games too.

Something can be said about a company ready to move forward and perhaps attempting to push their PS4 base over to PS5. Its a safe time to do so - the competition isnt exactly attractive and you sure as hell arent funneling them there.

They’ll probably start adding them under the Classics tier.

Most games have been cross-gen so they won’t be moving that far away from including games that work on PS4.

2 of the 3 games coming to PS+ for Feb will also work on PS4.

I don't see anything wrong with this. PS4 is 12 years old ffs.

No doubt some babies will be crying for PS4 shovelware in their subscription.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but what if they allowed PS4 games via PS+ for PS5 only? That would incentivize PS4 owners to upgrade and keep the PS+ library with enough to justify a purchase (for PS5 owners).

At the end of the day it's still decreasing the value of your service. PS3, Vita and PS4 were different platforms and this means Sony had a better excuse to ditch providing games for the older systems on a monthly basis. PS5 is 99% compatible with PS4 so there's really nothing against keeping monthly PS4 games, because everyone would still be able to play them. But no, that would cost too much and I guess a 30% price increase for PS+ Essential wasn't enough for them.

The service started as 2 games. Just because exceptional circumstances meant we sometimes got 2 extra games thanks to the Vita doesn't mean I expect it always. Be great full for the bonuses but don't lose the run of yourself.

Yeah at some point it was ridiculous. The PS4 had just launched and was hooked up, the PS3 was still hooked up too, and I had a Vita. I could download a ton of games. I didn't even buy a Vita game.

.. wtf ?

The PS4 has a decade+ library of games that can be brought in to build up the service. Not every PS4 game on the service is a Life of Black Tiger.
I'm talking specifically about the PS4 games that Sony offers as part of the PS+ service - which is what this news story is about.

The PS+ service doesn't need building up with PS4 titles; that generation is long dead now.

If people want PS4 games, they can buy almost any PS4 game from the store. There's no benefit in my view to adding old PS4 titles to PS+ in 2025.

Okay, I won't, Mr. Sony. I shouldn't have expected a service to expand to gain even more subscribers and then scale down again once they're already onboard.
