OH! And whenever you guys are ready to leave the first little town and move to the large one in the southwest, DO NOT fall for Jacob's shitty nostalgia. The house he wants sucks! I just wasted resources on that crap... Drive down the same street to the west and you'll find a base that's quite a lot more useful.

Fuck my life...

He told me that damn "tree house line" and I basically felt like the game was hinting at me to grab that spot, hah, so I moved my crew there.

We were in dire straights so I had to make a decision soon before logging off for the day. Too much infestation near the church and we were far too crowded, so people were becoming upset and morale was dropping fast.

I panicked and moved them to the spot he recommended and after doing so like 4-5 infestation spots appeared on the map :(

Thanks for the advice, though. I'm going to scope that spot out when I get a chance to log back in. But before doing so, I'm going to need some major resources and clear out some of the infestation in hopes of improving the morale within my group.

Also what are some of the things you can do with neighbouring groups? A few of them are located near my out posts and our "ring" is growing quite large and we've gained over 85% of their trust it seems, but I'm not sure what I can do with that.

I've been really enjoying it thus far, there's a lot of stuff going on it took awhile for me to understand how everything works. Had a fun moment where I told someone to come pick up supplies at this fast food joint, on their way to it they were attacked by two zombie hordes and I had to save him by ramming the hordes with a car lol. Great game for $20

Yeah, it's not very forgiving and has a very steep learning curve, but once you've figured it all out and it clicks, you just can't stop playing.

It's digital crack.

I still think the best little thing in the game is the "moments of silence, or the small gatherings in the base after a character dies and little quotes about them"

Its not much but it was that it occurred at all that amazed me.

"Marcus...he was with us from the beginning." "Never complained about the cooking"

I really do have a feeling MS is going to leap into the Full MMO for the XBox One with this and I am excited to see a next gen version.

Yeah, this is a great and pretty unappreciated part of the game that adds a lot to the overall feel and realism of the game.

I've only had Maya die, but the comments from Lily, etc were really well done and pulled the heartstrings a little too. It felt like someone important died and not just another random no name character.

I'm surprisingly enjoying this a lot, it's really scratching that zombie apocalypse simulator itch. I'm liking the sneaking and melee finishers. If only it had full-blown multiplayer, this would be DAY Z on consoles. I wasn't expecting this to be quite complex with the homebase management, earning influence, resource hunting, barricading places. I really wish I could give items to players in a more efficient manner, rather than very rarely taking control of them and doing it manually. The bags are way too small.

The squad AI is seriously good. I guess this excuses the lack of co-op. I just let them have it out with enemies while I can sit back. That hostage grab with you doing the double-team attack is pretty sweet, and zombies can grab you too.

The brutal melee NEVER gets old, and I love that there are environmental-sensitive finishers, like pushing a zombie near a wall and smashing him with the 2x4. A lot of the finishers remind me of The Last of Us.

It's a really pretty game, too.

They've added a lot of stuff. They've even thought of bashing car doors to get rid of stragglers.

Played the trial for five minutes and then just bought it. So much fun and it's just want I needed right now for the zombie sandbox mode I'm in at the moment.

Just needs some Co-Op/Multiplayer and it would be perfect!

Wow this game has terrible screen tear. I usually would never complain of that but after watching the IGN quick look its truly awful.

Yeah, this was definitely my most pleasant surprise. The only thing I don't like about bringing a partner is that they apparently have no appreciation for stealth. Too often, I'll sneak up on a zombie only to have my partner run and club it in the face (without actually killing it).

lol, this bugs the shit out of me too.

Yeah, they have no patience!

BTW, what can I do with the agree/disagree/taunt/cheers? Just for fun?

I've been doing this so much, it's so satisfying when you're going at speed and smack a zed with the door.

Almost too satisfying.

I haven't checked the leader boards but is this tweet true about how well it's selling?

https://twitter.com/aegies/status/342722964145467392

It's true. Developers said in a tweet that the leaderboards only register bought copies, Last I checked, they were close to 160k. I'm beyond happy they've found success with this, it shows there's a market for this kind of zombie game.

Could State of Decay be the next Xbox "system seller"? I've seen here and on other forums, people saying how they've bought an Xbox just for this game. Games that can do seem pretty rare and MS should take note.

---
And by the way, leaderboard numbers are somewhere in the 160,000s now

As someone on GameFaqs pointed out, some of those numbers might be multiple profiles from the same console (so only one sale), but still that is probably only a very small amount of overall sales

A downloadable title as a system seller? I doubt it.

The next game from Undead Labs, given good word-of-mouth due to SoD and a bigger push from MS, could do wonders on XBONE, though.

What was the last game that caused people to buy a new system just for that one game? A games that's an original IP, not a sequel?

Games like that have to be rare.

The IGN guys said it was because of the way it was recording. It's nowhere near as bad as the video shows it to be. I only got to play for around an hour last night and it totally wasn't as bad as that video made it seem. Try the demo and see for yourself.

Anecdotal, but a couple of people at work bought a 360 just for Minecraft. Such is their addiction to the game. Plus its split screen co-op allows them to play with their partners/kids.

But yeah, for the most part, not many downloadable games would be system sellers. Minecraft is a phenomenon at this point, so it's not all that surprising it would shift some consoles.

Lost Maya :(

Ran into a Feral trying to escort a guy home. Need to be more careful. Game is so good.

It hurts. I still feel the sting whenever I pass where she died. Getting revenge helps, but the pain never truly goes away.

You should start believing it. I know a lot of people who have purchased an Xbox 360 for Minecraft some even for Castle Crashers. I work in retail and not only have seen actual consoles purchased for Minecraft but lost parents coming in asking how to get Minecraft for their kids and end up buying a 360 just so the kids can play that game alone.

God damn it Alan. Pastor Will was a dick but there was no need to shoot him in the middle of the church for God and everyone else to see. Not very smart Alan, not very smart at all.

p.s. someone should use Wolf Parade's Modern World as the soundtrack to a video. Was listening to their Queen Mary album while in the shower and it seems like it'd be a great fit.

It's starting to get irritating. I can't do anything because the game keeps triggering missions and looking for my dumbass survivors that got loss. Then everyone needs a talking too. Every time I leave home it's about how there's too much hordes, too much infestations, not enough X and so on. STFU already.

Just bought an xbox 360 used to play this game to hold me over for the summer droughts, along with also getting TLOU on my PS3.

Just love open world games and you guys sold me. Love times in gaming when something comes out of nowhere.

Dedicate some time to resource gathering. Once you've done that for a couple of hours and morale is high, they'll back off a little.

Talking to everyone is also a pretty big part of the game. You have to maintain a close relationship with the characters so they don't become depressed. If they become too depressing, they'll eventually kill themselves apparently.

Will Ed ever grow a pair and stop with this "Fear Itself" or "Melonchany" bullshit?
Seriously feeling like the SoD version of "Hey cousin! Let's go bowling!" here.

Man I have only see one infestation, the first one of the game near the church. Other houses get infested? Starting to wonder how I will get the clear 5 infestations in one day achievement.

I have also helped the sheriff of the town where the judge is clear a couple but that was part of a mission so I don't count it.

I think the point of the game is to exactly do that. You will loose people, you will need to make choices, you will need pick and choose your battles.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
It's pretty insane how well this game seems to be selling. The leaderboards keep updating if you go up a page and back down so you can see how many keep coming in within a few seconds. Within a minute it went up about 100.

It makes sense here tho. You're main goal (apart from surviving the bleak world) is to ensure you help as many people as possible survive along with you. People are on the edge of full mental breakdowns, they need to talked to, reassured, etc otherwise it's going to end badly.

It's why I love this game so much. Your goal is to help yourself and others survive a very bleak world where one wrong step means you'll be torn apart.

Holy crap GAF.

This game wasn't on my radar AT ALL. It's completely come out of nowhere and it's the fucking game I've wanted all my life. So impressed with this considering it's an arcade game. I've only played for a couple of hours but it's doing everything right. Can't wait to get involved with some of the discussion going on here.

Man, is no one else having this "too many infestations!" bullshit going on? I have zero! Morale keeps dropping (thankfully at a manageable rate, but still) and shit but there's no way for me to stop it. On top of that, they keep popping up at an absurd rate every time I shut them down, like fucking whack-a-mole. Glad they're taking a look at toning that down a little bit.

Also, you can climb the brontosaurus in the dino gas station park thing. Success!

Heh. We're eight years and 550+ games deep into XBLA's existence (longer actually, since it did exist on Xbox). How does a game reviewer not know for sure that not a single one of those games counts trial players on the leaderboard? Come on, son, know your job.

How far have you progressed the story? I'm still doing odd jobs and scavenging for the most part. I went to see Doc earlier at the farm, that's about the only story mission I've done today.

Yeah, this was completely off my radar until about 10 mins ago. I'm pretty sure I want to buy it and all I had to read was "open-world zombie survival game". lol

Why arent there any more reviews for this? Its not exactly a niche game.

Set the demo to download before I came to work. Hopefully its a good representation of the full game.

I always get the message that my stash exceeded it's limit. Time to move out I guess. That warehouse seemed like a good place.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm thinking either the reviewers want to play more of the game before reviewing it or they were waiting for the The Last of Us review frenzy to die down

wtf, didn't know Jesper Kyd did the soundtrack for this. It's up on Spotify now.

What's the ETA on the PC version? This year or next? I really cannot stomach playing on 360 any more.

I was convinced until today that this game was the top down squad-based zombie game that looked more like a Jagged Alliance type game, which is why I had kind of been ignoring it.

But holy cow the number of systems and possibilities that are in this $20 XBLA game is kind of insane. It's at least proportional to its jankiness (no game breaking bug so far... but I came close a couple of time in just one hour of play). The production values and characters are also suprisingly solid. Fuck yeah Jesper Kyd.

It's so rare for me these days to just stumble upon a game I'd never heard of before, so this is an extremely pleasant surprise that should keep me interested until TLoU next week.

This is exactly why I relocated my group, because the infestations were non-stop... Then as soon as the game loaded our new location about 5 or so popped up on the map lol. I should have guessed our progress as a group wasn't going to be smooth sailing forever. Oh well, looks like I'm gonna have to stock up on some fire bombs and have a little fun at night.

I just hatched a plan that I hope will work. An outpost grid covering the whole town!

That was what I said? It's Microsoft policy and it's been that way for 8 years.

This game is a bit overwhelming. :(

Anyone have a starters guide or 'dumbass newbie' guide?
Some pointers based on my playstyle:

- Loot, loot, loot, loot.
- Ignore zed hunts.
- Only go for clearing out infestations and helping people if you want friend (i.e. playable) status with that character, or if infestations are becoming too many.
- Don't bother caring too much about your "neighbors."
- Story missions aren't timed so you can ignore them however long you need.
- Cars are superior to walking; the noise they make is not a problem and running over a horde will save your ass many times.
- But level up that cardio (by sprinting) so you get more stamina for fighting.
- Melee over shooting in almost any situation. I use a shotgun to thin out hordes running at me and because I want to level up the skill for no particular reason, otherwise I only melee.
- Carry two melee weapons (in case one breaks), a firearm if you want, one stack of chips and one stack of painkillers.
- Switch characters when they get tired and injured instead of pumping one character with stims and running out your supply - it'll even out your XP to give you an allrounded team instead of one superman with 8 terrible buddies as a bonus.
- Get a larger backpack ASAP (camp site in the woods, just north of your home base in the church, it's VERY close).
