Chill spoiler crew. This shit is getting annoying. This is also not a game you play for the story or the ending (which fucking sucks anyway).

I didn't even realize this game HAD an ending. Heh. I assumed you would keep building and building, and eventually return to civilization.

I am really curious about how long you can survive until all supplies run out after you have scavenged the whole map.

I'm slowly starting to realize that the horror isn't there when I actually play the game. During my 20 hours with the game I've never died or even been close to death with any character by playing things smart. But the real horror always begins when I boot up the game and press Continue.

Let's take a closer look. Last Friday I quit the game with 450 reputation, full morale and all my resources maxed somewhere at 50. My base is in the church with 14 survivors. So today I had the time to continue and here's what happened: first of all, a shitload of journal updates popped up. Okay, Pastor had the black plague, Carlos, Karen and Ed had gone missing. Morale was almost gone, fear had struck to my survivors, infestations everywhere and I had 22 rep. Right, well I grab snacks and some painkillers and head out to rescue a missing person from a nearby building (200 meters away). By the time I get there, I receive an update that Pastor has died. Fucking hell, I quickly rescue Karen, run back to base and find out that he took Marcus, Maya and Sam with him to the grave.

The whole thing about this world going on even when I'm not playing needs to go away, seriously. That's just complete bullshit.

Food can be created indefinitely and ammo doesn't seem important so the only crucial supplies you'll ever run low on is meds and construction stuff. I wish there were facilities to create that stuff.

Just shy of 400k.

Undead Labs must be going crazy, I don't think anyone (even the more optimistic fans who've followed this game for years and long saw its potential) could have imagined it would see this much success.

great job UL, absolutely deserved. I'll be there day one when you finally release the PC version too.

Anything to support this level of ambition.

Where can I get a 360 for cheap to play this game?

Well, for 130 at Gamestop, you can get on older model one. Gamestop gives out a decent warranty on used hardware.

I wouldn't buy one off Craigslist/eBay, personally. If it's too cheap, it was probably banned/hacked and therefore useless on Live (which would prevent you from buying this game, heh).

The patch is supposed to remove the playable characters dying thing. It doesn't bother me too much though. I like the notion that random, possibly violent shit could break out while I'm away.

Completely agree.
Also, the reviews are nothing stellar, despite I'd say that the only (or the biggest) flaw of the game is the subpar graphical performance.
So the success of this game is a prime example of word of mouth.

I'm surprised myself at how polished the rest of the game feels.
The gameplay is very well thought and very well put together.

I've already seen it described as "the zombie game you always wanted", and can't help but to agree.
Will be up there in my GOTY list, that's for sure.

man, maya is being a problem child while she is at base. I had to take her out for a talk three times yesterday and the journal said she injured someone in a fight. wow.....

Bahaha sounds amazing. Whenever I've left the game in a good state, morale or rep doesn't go that low. But I didn't leave the game for 3 days. You'll always find new survivors, and you can still pick up the dead survivor's backpacks for their stuff.

I don't want this "always on" feature to go away, you just had some bad random luck and it's salvageable.

The new patch will be more forgiving where playable survivors won't get killed when you leave the game.

I'm guessing it'd due to her No Nonsense trait. lol, I haven't had an anger crisis from her lately, but she's always arguing with folks. I got message telling me she argued at someone for trying to console her.

I've been on a roll during my absences for a while now. Been getting more painkiller and snack stock. One time my peeps had even brought back a truck for me.

Bet I just jinxed it.

No, no, no, that's one of my favourite thing about this game. Tweak it, yes; get rid of it, no. Most of the issues folks are having are connected to the TMI bug which should receive a patch in the next week or so once it has passed certification. It will get rid of the TMI bug (people going missing, massive drops in morale) and stop playable characters from dying whilst you are off-line. Marvellous, no?

Also? They won't get rid of it entirely, thank the Gods. Directly from the fingers of the Undead Labs Community Manager/Developer, Undead Sanya:

Eh, I can always count on the forums to bubble up the really important stuff.

I mean, we knew within an hour that that infestation thing was just not what we'd meant. It was never supposed to be checking the entire damned map. Fixing that will fix multiple related issues.

We also knew immediately that our repair system didn't line up with your expectations. Nothing else (visibly) runs in terms of real life hours. Your expectations were GAME days, and an in game day is two real life hours.

(That doesn't mean everything is open to a vote. For instance, there are lots of people (who didn't know about the game before it launched) who don't think the world should be persistent even when you're offline. And that's basically the heart of the game and never going to change.)

So, yeah, we may not see every single bit of feedback, but the big stuff will reach us within minutes.

Is there anywhere I can pick up some melee weapons fairly easily? I'm really early in the game and I've just lost one guy due to not having a weapon (while desperately searching for one). The searching is kinda fun in itself but I need to be able to crowd control if I want to actually survive in this game.

That is reassuring, can't wait for that patch! XD

Just moved into the warehouse. This place is tiiiiight. Kinda wish it didn't have those built-in stations though.

I really like the look of this game. It has the Alan Wake scenery thing going on. I don't think I could bring myself to buy it on xbla though. I've never bought anything from there as yet. Hopefully this massive interest will speed up the PC version.

Yeah, finally got 12+ people in my crew. Just hope I won't have wasted too much construction material on my previous base.

Question: How are you supposed to park the cars to get them in the official parking/repair spot? Does it matter on which side of the thing?

It does matter. This is how it should look:

My community fell apart. Three got ripped in half, two died from fever, one changed and killed another, people started leaving

So I started a new save and decided to do no cars playthrough. My only vehicle use has been to drive off the bridge because I never got the chance to before. (It is possible to jump the bridge)

Anyway I'm loving it so far. It's really intense. I'm sneaking and avoiding conflict more than ever before. It took me thirty minutes to get from the camp to the church and I took some detours in between. Made a stupid decision, shot at zombies while Marcus and Ed fighting near a gas tank. The explosion gave Marcus internal injuries and I didn't have any painkillers so we were sneaking and fleeing for most of the journey to the church.

Even so, it's very tempting to use cars. I really wish there was a greater penalty/risk for using cars. I have an idea for hotwiring and an alarms/disabled penalty.

Anyway, there were friendly survivors west of church. So I set out to meet them. At night, on foot. I check my map. Four hordes all roaming the same area. I've never had a more intense experience in SoD and this is only forty-five minutes into my new playthrough. Going from bush to bush, hordes passing by mere inches away from me. Stealth killing a few stragglers.

Playing without cars is the way to go if you want a more challenging, more intense, more rewarding and strategic experience

Won't you have to use cars for missions that on the other side of the map?
Yeah for the missions that require it, I'd use a vehicle but besides that, I'm trying my best to resist the urge to just jump in a car.

IMO it's been a deeper experience than my other playthrough. Hordes are an even greater threat. Stealth and hiding becomes paramount. You really feel like you're exploring the world. You have to pack your inventory smart for long journeys. My other playthrough was eight hours in and so far, an hour of playing without cars has been ten times as intense and challenging.

So I dug my old 360 out of storage, ran to Gamestop and bought a replacement power brick and HDD, and now I'm going through the laborious System Update cycle right now in preparation to play. This day was inevitable. I am so ready for this.

My old 360 says hi, by the way.

Hey, what's up! From TLOU to this now, huh?

Considering you love open world games and survivor horror, you are going to love this game. It's my favorite zombie game ever. Intense and challenging, if you get careless you die.

I've begun confronting hordes on foot more often now. My little tribe is 25 people strong now, and I genuinely think you can play this game indefinitely. Food is never low thanks to my garden, I can trade lessons for ammo, and I'm consuming no medicine at all currently. Construction materials are the only resource that seems truly non-renewable, but I think that if my group continues growing horde's won't be an issue (Lily's annoying calls will).

I would really love some post-game content.

Ha ha yeah man, I've been hounding this game for the last week. I was actually considering buying a new 360 last weekend because I couldn't find the console shell, but with some digging, luckily I did. Originally I was going to hold out for the PC version, but it looks like that's not coming out for weeks if not months :( I'll double dip though!

I can't wait to see what this is like in comparison to TLoU, which as you know I'm having a real hard time enjoying. I like more random, emergent gameplay.

If you like random emergent moments, you're going to love this game.

If you have time to spare, I made a thread on the Undead Labs forums for people to post their "Oh Shit" moments. You know, moments when things just unexpectedly fall apart and all you can do is panic? In a week...23 pages of nothing but unscripted "Oh Shit" moments.

The stories are entertaining as hell.

Ah cool, I'll read it while I'm updating! Thanks dude! Hopefully I'll have some stories to share!

Constantly impressed by being able to walk into every building. I can't think of another game with that feature. Also- no load times!

This is really the zombie game that should have been made years ago.

Man, why can't I check how long I've been playing.

Feels like I've already put 20 hours into my first play through and I feel like I'm, maybe, 60% of the way through the game.

Great stuff all round.

Holy christ, I tried running over one of those big, fat zombies and it popped my front tires. I was carrying some supplies too, so I had to jump through a bunch of windows just to lose the zombies since I couldn't sprint very far. Love this game :) Animal Crossing is starting to take most of my time, though. Hopefully nothing bad happens if I don't play for a while.

Nothing quite like going to pick your main after Marcus only to find out she's missing in action.

Roaring rampage of revenge indeed.

If you look at some of the profiles eventually your characters start carving out stories for themselves. Take Sofia for example. She's been counseling Ed about his depression for days now, going out for walks and drives so they can talk about how they can make it through this apocalypse together. Then one day I decide that Darla should go on a run for supplies so that I can get her more experienced in the fine art of fucking shit up, and I return to find that Sofia is missing. I use Marcus to go scrambling through a few homes with a shotgun and start systematically clearing them with a certain haste I don't usually have, leaping through windows and hopping fences. I break down the door to a shed and find her.

"Thanks, I guess it was all getting to me."

I escort her back home and upon arriving I look at her stats to make sure she isn't hurt because she's slowly but surely become a goddamned monster that's fun to play as and someone I've come to actually care about. Turns out she ran away because she was getting scared of the impending apocalypse. She was putting on a facade the entire time.

This isn't a standardized plot event, mind you, just how the randomly generated missions fell in to my lap, and it makes a cohesive narrative. Fucking magic.

I really wish there was more of a risk to using cars. I know many have been asking for fuel but personally I don't see any easy or practical ways of adding that mechanic to the game without totally changing the finely-tuned gameplay. My suggestion would be easier to implement and be linked directly to the character skills and community management

My suggestion would be to implement hot-wiring and an alarm/disabled risk to using a car. These three variables would be linked and be determined by a character's skills like wit, research, and traits (so a criminal background would have an increased chance of success at hot-wiring). Some characters wouldn't be able to hotwire at all.

This system could use the exactly same mechanic as searching. The exact same style, just with the word "Hotwiring" instead of "Searching". You could either do it slowly or could speed up the process, but that would noisier and at a greater risk of either setting off the alarm or disabling the car. If the alarm goes off, the car is still driveable but the alarm have the largest noise radius in the game and would stay on until a character with the necessary skills could turn it off. Even if the character exited the car, the alarm would stay on for a period of time. If a car is disabled, only a character with a mechanic skill or high research could fix it. The cars in your parking spots would have the alarms disabled and wouldn't have to be hot-wired

I feel this is much easier to implement than fuel tanks or siphoning fuel and it would be directly linked with characters and your community. Maybe your best combat character has low wit (more likely to set off alarms or disable a vehicle) or can't hotwire at all. You would also have to selective about what cars to save in your parking spots

What do you think?

Finished the game last night and had a blast. Undead Labs are now on my radar and anything they release in the future will be supported.

I wish there was a radio station or 2 in the game to have on while in cars. Maybe one with just the emergency broadcast system going 24/7 and another with some type of zombie news or people debating or arguing about the cause. Would of added more to the atmosphere.
