Did you read the OP...

yes ;_;. apparently not thoroughly enough.

Thanks for answering the question though!

edit: and it's not in the OP. It's a few posts down, though. When the post talks about how you're a community it really makes it seem like it would be MP.. or at the very least, perfect for mp. sadface for it being only SP. :(

What a lovely, disempowering, ugly diamond in the rough this game is. <3 I skipped over the XBLA ads several times since I'm also of the mind that zombie games are a little played out, but the size of this thread encouraged me to actually find out more about it, and I'm so glad I did - it pulls from my favorite parts of Dead Rising and other games that force you to deal with shitty situations where you are just overwhelmed by numbers.

Someone earlier mentioned Rebuild, and this game reminds me a lot about it; I never played the free browser version but there's a version on iOS that's the best "zombie SimCity" you'll ever play. You manage resources and send survivors with different skills out on trips that they may not come back from, and it's also open world in that there are at least 5 different win states to get to, IIRC. I wish that State of Decay did a much better job explaining its systems, but now that I'm diving into them I'm finding a lot of surprising complexity.

"Special zombies". What a pity, I hate gimmicky zombies.
I do generally agree and it's partially why I can't stand Left 4 Dead - too much goofy shit that isn't zombies. These ones aren't so bad, though. Only one of them kind of breaks the mold, the others are just obese or were SWAT cops who happened to be in gear when they died.

This game could've used more dialogue for the home base.

People are unique. Why not zombies?
He means that (even more) magical zombies that can shoot lasers and shit are lame. Lots of game designers can't come up with ways to make regular zombies intimidating, so they have to invent flying zombies that can shoot flesh bombs at you or some shit.

Ferals appearing oout of nowhere can be a real treat.

My church is a fortress. Don't really know why I would move, but I'll try bringing in a bunch of new survivors to help.

Leaderboards are up over 380k now. What impresses me most is that every time I log in it seems like I lose 10-20k spots on the leaderboard. There are a lot of active players.

My friend came over today and played it for a bit. He ended up killing my maya off by accident of not knowing what to do. He said it reminded him of GTA 3 with zombies and he really liked it. Said he was buying it tonight.

The church is cozy with a small group, but lacks a lot of facilities. At some point it'll be tiresome to go back and forth between the story locations and it.

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
The biggest knock against the church for me was no way to comfortably add a supply area so I was capped at the 25 food limit, as you get more people that won't last all that long.

Story missions will get farther from where you are so you will have to leave. Moreover friends will only get lost/trapped near your base so if you do story missions far away you will have to come back a long way to rescue them.

Well the problem is that normal zombies are actually pretty boring... You can make them artificially intimidating (as well as more realistic) by making them kill you in one or two hits, but that just sucks for most players, especially in a game that has perma-death. Plus, having the same type of zombie over and over just gets repetitive, and most players can master how to outsmart them pretty easily (after all, your typical zombie is supposed to be very stupid). If there would only be the normal zombies, by the point I'm at in the game, I wouldn't give a fuck about the zombies since I know how to deal with large groups of them by now. The specials throw that for a curve and make the late game more challenging.

I get your point that it's not exactly realistic and in an ideal simulator there wouldn't be special zombies, but they're just there for the sake of more fun gameplay to break up the same-ness of the regular zombies.

Well the church doesn't allow you to build all of the types of buildings, it can't support a big stockpile of resources, it has trouble supporting larger groups of survivors (typically not enough sleeping areas). However, it is very well defended. As Vamphuntr said though, eventually a lot of story missions will take place far away from your home base, and you'll also want to do a lot more scavenging in other parts of the map. Moving your homebase to a bigger location that's closer to where all of the action is makes sense once you get a bit further. Keep playing and eventually you'll be begging for a bigger place to move to. For me, once I started hitting the stockpile limit, and my survivors were complaining about the lack of sleeping space, and I was maxed out in building locations, I knew it was time for me to move.

8 hrs in, took Marcus to gather some materials and got ganged up on. :( I feel like I want to start over again, but I think I'll just press on and be more careful.

I was thoroughly sick of zombie games before this came out, but the IGN videos convinced me to give it a shot. For the first couple of hours it just didn't grab me, but after 4 straight hours last night I'm realizing that this game is something special.

It's unrefined to the point of being frustrating at times, and I could do without the permadeath (blasphemy, I know), but I'm really getting lost in the experience. It conveys the survival/scavenging aspects of the situation very well, and the simple act of killing zombies is very satisfying.

Kudos to Undead Labs; glad State of Decay is getting the sales it deserves.

Do you have to play this everyday to make sure the people you're caring for don't die? I want to start it tomorrow but I know I probably wont play it again for a week and I don't fancy coming back to a town of dead people.

Nah just make sure that you leave the game with enough supplies and that everyone is safe and the morale is high.

Blasphemy indeed. Where's the sense of danger if there was no perma-death? The idea that any encounter can end in the loss of a valued party member keeps me on edge and cautious.

Tip to killing the fat ass zombie, he is the reason you should carry a gun. Only a few headshots to kill him and shooting him in the head stops him from moving.

I think the perma-death is done really well. It only really hurts emotionally, it doesn't take very much to get a new character's skills up.

I have a problem with this game. I keep wanting to start over to maybe be in a better position when I travel further into the gameworld. Is this adviseable?

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.

Why bother? The point is just to play through the experience, despite your fuck ups.

If this really happened, you'd fuck up and pay for it a lot.

Trying for perfection isn't the point.

Yeah, I made the mistake of coming up on one in a compact car and thinking I could just blast into him.

Don't do this.

Bought the game this afternoon, BTW. Really, really good. $20 seems high, but hell, I paid twice that for EDF 2017 which is the mother of jankfests.*

Really outstanding game. I nearly missed the Game of Thrones finale because I had issues at the church that HAD to be dealt with!

*i mean that in the best use of the word. I don't consider something like Deadly Premonition in the same category, as that game was just broken shit. Sorry GAF.

Would you be better off going for the "perfect run" a 2nd time round? That's my plan.

I find the jank to be fine because it has never adversely affected me (not that I can remember). It doesn't really hinder you in combat, driving, traversal, etc so I have stopped noticing it.

That being said the games technical performance is bad.

Played this for half an hour yesterday. Jesus christ, the tearing, the framerate and the popups. Should have waited for a PC version.

I think 20$ is really fine for the game. I posted my thoughts more in details before in the thread but I feel it's worth it. The concepts and the mechanics behind the games are really strong. It is extremely flawed, janky and buggy but there isn't quite anything like it on the market right now. I agree that the performance is embarrassing, especially while driving as it's pretty much unacceptable.

Pretty cool they are close to 400k on the leaderboard. Hopefully they get another publisher and a bigger team so they can ship a bigger title that is more polished.

I may start doing this as exploring the countryside has seen the number I encounter sky-rocket.

need to find a silencer first tho. Will see if I can make one using the workshop otherwise I'll have to check the police station, which by the way everyone should do. There's a grenade launcher in the upstairs locker...

Lol, I was escorting Jacob to a simple trade job. We got bull rushed by a fatguy. Fatguy ripped poor Jacob in half. I was able to kill the fatguy and collect Jacob's belongings. As soon as I got back to homebase I had to mercy kill a sick guy. I'm down to seven people.

My morale is almost full, and I have no conflict at homebase. Why do people keep running away? Is it a way to pull you into doing more story missions?

I don't think you can prevent it, it's just something that will always happen. I notice two survivors has "Runaway" as their character trait, and it's always them who I have to go and rescue. Coincidence?

They're at 395K, very close to the 400k barrier.

We'll crack open a cold one for ya.
That's awesome. Game hasn't even been out for a week yet. So SoD is only behind Minecraft in day one and week one sales.

I think before it was Trials Evolution, with 300K in its first week

Just finished it and wrapped up all the achievements last night. ACHIEVEMENT RELATED -Thought it was fitting to get the eaten by zombies one last. Took a while to decide who to sacrifice for the two death ones. Marcus was a beast at the end. Fully maxed out with 2H specializations is no joke (<3 sweep). State of Decay is THE zombie game I've always wanted. If you asked me earlier this year if a $20 xbla game would surpass BioShock as my GotY, I would've laughed at you. This is probably the most well realized world in an open world game ever. The attention to detail was amazing.

Only had a few negatives really. I quit getting story missions towards the end. Once I reloaded after beating I immediately started getting them again though. I also wish stealth was a little more fleshed out including having it as a skill to raise. I'm glad they at least included some stealth though. Also, I can see how co-op would be fun, but I don't mind this being SP at all.
