Staying In Sochi Is A Hilarious Adventure in the ass.

No, I mean the treatment of gay people isn't improving anywhere by the American politicians pointing at Russia. If the US lead by example, it could legalize gay marriage for instance for the entire country. It would help gay people in the US. Pointing the finger at Russia isn't doing anything for the gays in Russia or the gays in the US.

So no complaining unless you can fix something outside your control. Cool. I expect no complaints from you about people complaining then.

Edit: Missed your post Besada, apologies.

The coverage, picking up every thing in a negative light especially among the western general public and especially US media is getting a bit ridiculous. It kind of seems to be a case of still having the Cold War rivalry blues and everything negative is thrown at the wall. There seems to be a sort of jelousy among many that the opening ceremony in particular blew the opening of vancouver and previous Winter Olympics away and the focus was on the one negative, the white ring formation of 10 seconds out of the multiple hours show

There are trash cans. For shit paper.

They're asking guests to put shit paper in a can.

Internal doors are never very solid. I've seen doors with a really thick cardboard or chipboard webbing inside, and that doesn't look too dissimilar.

lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

not sure where you are from but no

A very liberal part of Oregon, so I'm sure my perspective is very skewed. :p I was trying to make the point that the US as a whole is not as racist as people from other places seem to think. You don't really hear about people throwing bananas at black athletes for example. Again, I apologies for my comment sounding really stupid though. I still think I would ask people this... If racism is widespread in the US today, how would you describe what it was like 60 years ago? We've come along way.

Edit: back on topic... The worst hotel I ever stayed in was an extremely cheap hotel in Cusco, Peru and even it was 10x nicer than some of these pics suggest. The tarp ceiling is hilarious

The protests are making the Russian people think 'see, those gay people are coming for our culture'. Putin is getting more popular and the radicals are getting strengthened, not the normal people.

This was the argument of southern white supremacists in the civil rights era about 'outside agitators.'

I'm really surprised at the amount of complains regarding the TP thing. The olympics in Brazil will be very entertaining in this aspect.

Yep and it will be very hypocritical if the complaints are overlooked as oh it happens at a big event
There has already been plenty of criticism towards Brazil regarding the safety of building stadia, how they have treated locals etc. There will be more scrutiny as we get closer to their games, to claim or allude that Sochi criticism is purely anti Russian related is ludicrous.

I mean this is the guy that has defended Quaran-mandated violence against women, no surprise there.

Not to mention that he thinks shia labeef is a great actor, so I wouldn't take him very seriously.

I would be very interested to know how your false assumption of me 'defending quran mandated violence against women' has anything to do with my opinion of over criticizing of Sochi Winter Olympics.
PM me i dont want this to go off topic

And this pm me how it relates to this

I don't know whether that's content blocked outside of Canada, but the CBC does seem to plan on having the most extensive coverage according to a chart I saw on Reddit. Although that 1,500 hour figure might be a bit skewed by broadcasting in two languages.

Hard to say, since the CBC runs pretty much simultaneous coverage for everything in French and English. The CBC takes their winter sports coverage god damn serious.

Some of these Sochi hotel photos are hilarious though. The Vancouver 2010 accommodations must have been like paradise compared to this.

Backlash against the backlash begins

The term cold war could probably be applied to any Winter Olympics, but one day into the Sochi Games, it appears to have a particular poignancy here.

Americans, it would seem, have been led to believe that journalists in Sochi are living out of pup tents, foraging for berries, and having to kill itinerant yak for sustenance. In some cases, journalists have arrived to find their hotel unbuilt or the water undrinkable.

Then the fifth Olympic ring failed to open from a snowflake during the signature opening sequence of the opening ceremony Friday night, and many suspicions seemed confirmed: Sochi is a mess. The "Sochi Problems" Twitter feed, after all, has more followers than the official feed.

Yet by the measure of early hiccups at an Olympic Games, Sochi isn't particularly remarkable. "These are standard problems," says David Wallechinsky, president of the International Society of Olympic Historians.

So then why all the fuss?

Yet the fervency of the narrative here in Sochi suggests that lingering cold war perceptions of Russian incompetence, as well as fears and anger about the Olympics being given to Russia in the first place, could be playing a subtle role.

To be sure, much of the American press arrived in Sochi in a grumpier mood than usual.

First, some felt that by granting the Games to Russia – and Sochi, in particular – the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was gambling innocent lives to curry favor with a man many Americans see as a pseudo-dictator, Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sochi lies in the shadow of the Caucasus, the heartland of Russian terrorism, and indeed, the Sochi Games are the first post-9/11 Olympics to face a specific and credible terrorist threat.

Congressional hearings and official comments on security threats during the runup to the Olympics stoked fears further. Add to that the anger over Russia's law against gays and lesbians, and questions about the Sochi Olympics gained momentum. No major Western leaders, including President Obama, attended the opening ceremonies Friday as a pointed poke in the eye to Mr. Putin.

But those experiences have not all been typical, and other Olympics have not been models of clockwork organization, either. In Athens, for example, I was told to flip a certain switch before taking a shower or I would get electrocuted.

The surveillance in the shower comment was disturbing, but BoingBoing just completely made that headline up. Nowhere in the article, nor the source article they linked to, does it have a threat to a WSJ reporter that bathroom surveillance will be leaked. They've just taken the original story and put a clickbait headline on it.

Here is an example
