On a basic conceptual level they are. The main difference is that Elite is fun as hell and the X games are boredom made manifest.

They are very time needy games. You have to spend a lot of time in them to actually have an impact on something. I find them very interesting, but they are not for everyone.

Can't say for rebirth since that's alrady diffirent form the trailer.
