Let's see what Garshasp has that GOW doesn't:

-a full 1080p resolution
-real forms of anti-aliasing thanks to advanced nvidia technology
-a flawless 60 fps
-support for x360 controller

The game is shitty, give up your crusade.

Was wondering why Half Life 2 deathmatch suddenly got 1000 players, but it's on sale in the source mp pack.

Fun to play for a few rounds.
I didn't know it was so many Valve things on sale. I'll grab DoD:S, thanks.

It's hideous, regardless of how sharp the hideousness is.

Yo Garshasp in 5 words:

God of War, but good.

Ridiculous and pointlessly confrontational as this is, Garshasp is a pretty cool thing when you consider that - barring playability issues - it's basically an indie game on about the level of one of the PS2's top titles in terms of presentation. You can point out - and justifiably so - how GOW1 and 2 totally outdo it in spectacle and gameplay, but that stuff is still within the realm of possibility *in an indie game* now.

As blockbuster games set off to please everybody and their dog the same way expensive summer movie blockbusters do, there's a feeling that a lot of the franchises we count on for a certain type of experience are abandoning the things we were drawn to in the first place. Chances are you've played a "Quake" or a "Call of Duty" or a "Splinter Cell", et cetera in the past that will never roll back around to fill the role it played for you originally.

God of War isn't done being the game it was originally, so I don't worry about that particular franchise, but Garshasp is still a cool reminder that games like that can be put together with a minimal budget and be the now-niche we want a lot of our past favourites to be. It proves that the Splinter Cell we knew before Conviction can totally crop up in a different guise under a different name, by people who don't have to worry about everybody and their dog. Indie gaming won't just mean masocore platformers and pixely throwbacks when it comes to recapturing the flair of "retro" or bygone era games.

Sure, Garshasp is busted. It's sorta hilariously wonky in a ton of ways, but it's certainly sound enough to prove that when Ninja Gaiden is ALL QTE's and heads that don't come off, indie gaming will eventually probably save us all.

One of the most used bhop scripts for 1.6 no longer works anymore. When they tried to fix the crouch running, they pretty much removed a lot of scripting to prevent further exploitation of crouch running.

Ah, right. I hadn't noticed that as I don't use scripts myself, but still noticed the occasional person jumping around the place like it's Q3A.

So what's this I'm hearing about PC Gamer and Steam gearing up for an online magazine type thing at PAX?

Valve getting into the business of publishing gaming magazines?

This post was so good, it has to be quoted for posterity.

So I started up Counter Strike (assuming 1.6)

Not only is everything in Chinese (guessing location based)

I am kicked out of every single game. I sit there zone in and BAM KICKED.

What gives?

**Found location filter..gonna try.

lol this game is to hard core especially since people were killing me from below ground level.

Like I was walking on this drit ground and other side a ramp went down. The guy was at very bottom of ramp where as I was on other side of the wall.

Man so hardcore. I died for 6 rounds.

I love CS 1.6. Not being able to shoot people through several meters of concrete is something I sorely miss in CS:S.

Okay I think I will get CS:S but I am scared. I know what it's like to play a game for years. I did it with Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. I used to buzzsaw decapitate people on a 200 meter double bank shot around corners. I could snipe headshot unscoped through 3 second lag based on sound. Whoever is still playing CS has probably attained such familiarity and I won't stand a chance...

CS:S is more forgiving than 1.6. While the 1.6 player base is primarily comprised of people who have been playing the game for several years, the CS:S pool is more diverse. Begin by playing against the bots so you develop an understanding of the weapons and their recoil patterns, then move online to pick up the rest. You'll still die a fair bit, sure, but you won't completely suck and since you'll be killing and dying instead of just the latter the experience should be motivating rather than off-putting.

Whats a good ms for CS? (1.6 or Source)

I think I have 150-200ms.

Depends on your internet connection (I'm assuming you're playing on local servers). If you have dial-up or wireless, 150~200ms is about as good as you're going to get. If you have fixed-line broadband, then anywhere between 20~80ms depending on just how far away you are (e.g. I get ~20ms to servers here in Western Australia, but ~80ms to servers on the other side of the country).

If you have fixed-line broadband (xDSL, fibre, cable) yet you're seeing those pings chances are you're not playing on local servers. Keep in mind that Steam's server browser often lists foreign servers even if you have the region filter set to a local location since it reads the region from the server's sv_region cvar rather than the IP.

Broadband to router. Get 10m down and 4m up with wifi. Currently in Taiwan, should I use the Australian servers? I just get booted out of the local ones. Don't know why. Than I went to filter to US West.

Does the console say anything when you're booted from the servers? The bind to view the console is ~ but by default it's disabled. Go to Options -> Keyboard -> Advanced to enable it. I'm about to head out the door so I won't be be back on GAF for a while, but hopefully someone else can assist you.

Oh, and yeah, you can try the Aussie servers. The 3FL, Internode and GameArena servers spring to mind.

Got a refund on From Dust. Apparently Ubisoft told Steam to go through with them, provided you haven't played the game.

What should I buy with the 15 I got back?

+1 on Frozen Synapse (you get two copies for the price).

Wow, 46.4K concurrent peoples playing Deus Ex today on Steam with the European release. I thought 30K was pretty good a couple days ago. This is the biggest non Valve game I've seen in terms of number of concurrent users playing the game at one time.

Yeah noticed that too. This game must have achieved massive sales for that.

It had a good release window overall.... not much competition for now.

Plus a lot of pc gamers are fan of the original Deux ex .
