Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

Are you guys just collecting users to make a friends list bigger or do you actually intend to play games with each other?
More people to play DOTA 2 with when the beta becomes available is never a bad thing.

Aside from that, I have a...few games so if anyone is ever up for playing something a bit random I'll usually play.

Any solutions for the steam error "can't connect to steam network" when trying to go into offline mode? Internet is out and steam won't start in offline mode. Pulling the Ethernet cable did not work.

I have seen this error come up a lot in this thread.

I think (sadly) that unless you have your credentials saved, (they are needed to authenticate with Steam) it's no good, but if you can contact authentication server you could get online just for a quick second, which is needed to go offline properly, it's bit of a mess. Hopefully, you are able to tether a phone or borrow someone's wifi quickly, if not I think you're going to have to wait. :/

So you can't use offline mode unless you are online?

Offline mode has worked as it should only once for me. Typically, I have to set Steam to offline mode while still connected to the internet, run the games I wish to play offline (those left out will refuse to load), then disconnect from the internet. Granted, I haven't used it in about a year.

it used to be:

run steam, internet goes off, switch to offline mode, everything OK!

now it's:

run steam, make sure internet is still on, switch to offline mode, it should work I hope :s

The way I've seen it, and just as JaseC(and MRORANGE) says, unless you have your credentials saved(prepared for offline time I guess) or if you are logged in to Steam and are able to 'go offline' in the top menu, then I do believe it's a no go. I know there's been talk about it being changed in Beta, but I'll wait until then. To quote the "Go Offline" text:

"Offline Mode is used when you're about to unplug your laptop, or are otherwise expecting to not be connected to the internet. Many features such as Friends and the Server Browser, will not be available while offline. Only games that are fully up-to-date will be available."

It's always been buggered for me, except the last time I used it, which despite not running experiments thereafter I nonetheless consider a fluke. To my great surprise it worked flawlessly; I set Steam to offline mode, booted up my PC later on in the day sans internet connection and discovered that all of my games were perfectly functional.

Well that is very disappointing. Thanks for the responses guys.

This is how it still is for me. We're in thunderstorm season in Florida so I've lost internet a few times and I've been able to play any game I want just by clicking on the desktop icon like I normally do, didn't even have to switch to offline mode. I don't know why or anything like that but as long as it works I don't tend to question it lol

Well everyone who posted here got immediately about 50 new friends, that would have taken quite a bit longer in the dedicated thread. I guess its okay to have this coming up here once a few months for new users. It shouldnt be the main topic for every day, though. You probably wont read anything about it anymore in 1-2 days.
Conversation will be back to Steamgifts and Dirt 3 in no time, don't you worry Firehead. :p

in the Steamgifts forum, someone wondered if AMD will do a similar giftaway for Deus Ex: HR like they did with DiRT 3 -can't imagine GAF augmented with Deus Ex: HR code drops-

i'm gritting my teeth trying not to buy Bastion and Blocks That Matter
-cries at backlog-

I think we'd finally break Stallion Free if Deus Ex joined our prison economy.

Got Total War for the purchase and Dirt 3 when everyone else did.

So that's like 100 dollars off the card, except I probably wouldn't have ever bought both games anyway.

Internet is back. Yay! It's kind of funny, after the internet came back my desktop still wouldn't connect to the internet and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I had forgotten that I had pulled the ethernet able in my efforts to get Steam to start.

Hope they do change how offline mode work, seems kind of silly as it is. Next hurricane I'll know to go into offline mode beforehand.

Word of warning to those who want to move their Steam games.. move the steamapps folder first before uninstalling the Steam executable. It uninstalled all my associated games with it.. had to re-download 16 gigs yesterday and that was just a fraction of all my titles I had downloaded. :(

I don't think you even have to uninstall anything to move your Steam games. IIRC all you have to do is move your Steam Apps folder along with the Steam.exe to wherever you want them and when you login and relaunch the .exe from the new location it'll fill out the rest of the needed files automatically.

Not really, according to Knobtremor on the Steam forums:

Gameplay and story:

Well the story is okay, not special, not unlike all the other adventure stories out there, the game itself is a little like .. diablo 1, only prettier. The story tries to be a little more captivating, without really succeeding. Cutscenes are ingame, so dont expect flashy cutscenes. The way to story progress is where i have the real "issue" its more like an old adventure game where you sort of to "guess" where the items are, instead here you have to guess how to solve quests.
You can of course find guides online, but really? Making a hack'n'slash game into a sort of detective genre, is sort of a buzz kill for me, personally, but I see how that might appeal to some.

On visuals: Graphics are above the requirement for 2.5$ game.

I have a powerful machine for gaming, so I didnt notice it was especially tough on the hardware, but at times the graphics did glitch, not often though.

However the game has some bugs. Serious ones. You can expect the game to "forget" to give you items you need, and autosave after, forcing you to replay parts of the story (some times, a lot of story, if you dont manually save a lot) And its just ... a buzz kill for me to play a game ... with so serious bugs in it.

All in all? Why pay to play a game, that ... aaaaalmost out of beta? I did... Did I feel cheated? Yes. Had the game potential to be fun? Sure.

So is it worth it? Well, no, but if you have 2.5$ blow there are worse games out there. (Never pay the full 9.99 - you feel ripped off)

It's an interesting setting for an RPG, but I'll pass.

My review from the User Review thread:

Numen

Platforms: PC (available on Steam)

numen08040402a_1207281826.jpg

Hm.. Well lets say I was trying to play it with the thought in mind that its a cheap 2$ Diablo Clone (which it actually isnt because it was released for 40 or 50€ and its not isometric).

Anyway, the controls:
Actually they are not that big of an issue if you dont want to control with WASD. You cant control the character Diablo like by clicking to a spot because the camera is pretty near your character, not too far zoomed out, and you are inclined to play over the shoulder view instead of overhead view. You can control the character pretty well by walking forward with w and pressing the right mouse button to shift the camera in the direction you want to go.
Works pretty well I'd say.

Graphics:
Well its... not ugly but... dated. Art direction can make up for a lot but this thing is definitely not something you play for graphics or art direction, some of the enemies look nice though.

Gameplay:

The fights are a bit slow. Some of the enemies do look nice, I dare to say somewhat even original designed and you might get the occasional "i need to fight THAT?" moment. The fighting system you choose to use (bow, handweapon, magic) is a bit unflexible for my tastes but you randomly get new magic after leveling up. Which is fine in itself, but you dont have much choice over the skills you get. In the end you dont NEED more but it would be nicer to get the feeling that you played the game a bit more creatively instead of taking what has been chosen for you.
However it was nice that some monster do actually have "resistances" to some attacks so you need to adjust your fighting style a bit... but only a bit since the game is pretty easy (also due to the simple combat) and also gives you levels at a constant rate. You gain a level every 5 minutes more or less.
And again, fighting is too .. unflexible. You can and will choose between different attacks so you have some variations but since the characters are pretty limited in their movements you just stand there while spamming magic and hope that you enemies die before you do. Walking backwards and attacking (even with the ranged classes) is impossible since the movement is soooo slow backwards.

Story:
Weeeeeeell... Its bad, and even worse written. They really wanted you to care about that and so they sometimes wrote quite a lot to "immerse" you into the story but its just.. well.. bad.

Loot:

The thing that Torchlight and Diablo nailed was the Loot. Which is exactly where Numen fails. Even quite a bit into the game I constantly got the same items as drops by enemies. Another thing that bugged me was the inventory system. It was too small and not confortable to read and really would need some more colors or other distinctions to make it easier to browse through the items as I basically sometimes just picked up the stuff and didnt care much about what I found (also due to the fact that it was too easy and not that necessary to be up to date with your gear the whole time)
Also there is not much for ... values added to your armor and weapons. You get +12 to armor, + 3 strength and all variants but nothing like "absorb mana", "12% faster walking speed" and all that.
But at least your character changes according to the items you put on.

Conclusion:
Setting, enemies are nice sometimes, but the overall graphic makes it feel dated. Okayish way to fill the Loot urge, but nowhere near as good as Torchlight in that regard. For 2 bucks it fills 1 or 2 boring evenings (since its short) if you dont mind doing simple minded actions.
4/10 (-)

why would you compare it to diablo?

it plays more like a single player mmo, closer to guild wars

... true, but then a description of a Single Player mmorpg isnt far off from Diablo itself. Its just the perspective and some changes in game progression. It scratched my Diablo itch slightly, even though very bad, for some reason. And that was a long time ago, so i cant tell you more than from what I've written there. Only that I remember it being very bland and boring. But yeah, lots of Mmo-style fetch quests or go-there-kill-that quests.
