STEAM- Announcements & Updates 2011 Edition |OT2|

Comparing my games list to my wishlist, I realized the latter was the problem of the former. :(

Stalker (all 3), DoW II: Retribution, Terraria and Aquaria would probably be enough for me.
I wouldn't say no to Dreamfall or Vampire though.

In other news, I bought boxed versions of Metro 2033 and Darksiders for respectively 3€ and 4€. Making my own private Steam Sale.

Is this somehow registrable on Steam?

I don't have any particular games in mind, but i'm looking to pick up some point and click adventure games in particular, in addition to the few other things I know I want.

Based on a bit of what I've read, I don't think you can register the base game on Steam. If you already have the base game installed however (which I do), you can buy Vietnam through the sale and then register it because it is done in-game. According to this thread and what people have said in here.

OK, doing a bit more digging, the JB and JR entries are packs or bundles of some sort. No names, but they all have prices. Most of them (all of the entries labelled JB and the first couple of JR entries) have a price of $99.99. One entry is $49.99, another is $29.99 and another is $19.99.

They are all labelled as "June 2011".

No, but the maps, weapons and music are all great.
I was actually pretty disappointed they didn't bother to license any real music. It felt like a real step down from Battlefield: Vietnam which had a stellar soundtrack.

Good list, aside from Crysis 2 considering that's not even on Steam anymore.

All I want is The Witcher 2. So very, very badly.

Wut? Fortunate Son plays during the title screen, and I swear there are more than a dozen songs on the radio.

Vanilla ME2 for 5 is a damn good deal on D2D.

I don't have a promo code handy but that can be even lower too!

EDIT - Here's one - 42B92ABCFED171E18A46C1ECB4D95B6F for 15% off

Registers on Origin too.

man, I haven't played that game since it first came out back in the day. Haven't played it with any of the un-official patches or anything. I'd be all over that game if it went on sale...

I'm new to Steam, so this got me wondering. On GoG and whatnot you can apply whatever mods/patches (i.e. community made mods that up the resolution of games, widescreen, etc.) you want to your copy of the game, can you do that with Steam versions? I heard VtM: B is notoriously buggy without mods/patches.

Just remember: Nobody plays Vietnam anymore.

That's surprising, It's always packed on 360.

That's what I thought, but I could be mistaken.

Oh, never got to play the original Vietnam.

Just finished Hydrophobia with a playtime of 2.9 hours. I could probably extend that by an hour or two with the challenge mode and looking for collectibles, but I probably won't bother.

It's really too bad, because the most interesting thing the game does isn't introduced until literally five minutes before it ends. And the final boss was pretty frustrating. I still say buy for those who are on the fence. It was a nice little, if mediocre, adventure.

Now that everyone has TF2, Valve could give even more TF2 stuff away with the sale. My hope: crate keys with every purchase.
Aw, that's a really cool idea. Every summer sale purchase gives you a cooler key. Gets the new TF2 people buying more Steam games and gives everyone else a reason to play more TF2 and get hooked on hats.

Anyone can help me with graphics settings? I need to know what is best. Turn on vsync? triple buffering?anisotropic[sp?]should i put that all the way up. not sure about that since i am still new to pc.

Updated version?

He's probably referring to DR2:Off the Record which is DR2 story for Frank West instead of Chuck Greene with new game mechanics and new areas. I know on consoles it's going to retail for $40. Not sure about it coming to PC or what the starting price would be.

It's a cool idea but a lot of Steam regs would get "punished" by already owning most of the games on sale so unless they give out keys to those that already own the games I'd rather they not do it. Doing another treasure hunt thing on the other hand I would like. You still have to own the game(but can have purchased it previously) and you have to actually play the game.

No buy then, even for $4.50.

for the record, people do still play Vietnam.

the community is small, but i've never had a problem finding a game with 30+ players.

i also just checked and there's a handful of servers with 32 players ...a couple with 20 or so, and then a few with smaller amounts.

(and that's limiting the browser search to North America, btw)

Why are these codes not working for me now?

V-Sync + Triple Buffering is the tag team combo for maximum smoothness. Most games won't give you triple buffering, though. You can force it and vsync through your video card control panel. If you do that be sure to disable vsync in game.

Anisotropic filtering improves textures. It's a trade off, performance-wise. Each extra set of samples basically duplicates all of the textures at half resolution. So for 2x you need 1.5x the texture memory as no AF. At 4x you need 1.75x, and so on. There's a diminishing return on image improvement the higher you go but since the duplicate texture entries also get smaller, each step has a smaller performance penalty. Really, it's one of those things that you can obsessively tweak over if you really want to. It doesn't take a lot of samples to make a difference, though. Something like 4xAF isn't too rough to run and looks pretty good, usually. I say, set it to 4x and leave it as long as you've got the hardware for it.

How do the sales work? Are they new game sales every hour? Im just wondering how glued to the computer I need to be tomorrow.
The holiday sale had around 8 games as further discounted daily deals

Hourly deals sound horrific.

Valve doesn't do anything stupid like need 'likes' on facebook or hourly deals, it's a blanket variable % off of nearly everything then additional % off a handful of games (12 usually?) for 1 day at a time. Most sales seem to be 10-12 days, so there will be 12 or so games a day plus a couple of recap days of various daily deals within the past few days. Like day 5 will be recap of the most popular day 1-4 daily sales, then day 10 will recap days 6-9, etc.

Only buy daily deals until the last day of the sale, then buy anything else that you want that did not receive additional % off for a daily deal.

Ahh, okay. Thank you

The bigtime seasonal sales usually have almost everything in the store on sale at a decent rate, say 25%-50%. But then each day there are good number of featured games that are discounted like 75-90%. You can see those daily games discounted at the regular rate early in the sale, so don't be fooled and buy a non-featured game at 50% off when it might show up a few days later at 75%. If there's something you've got your eye on, wait for it to show up as a daily deal. If you don't see it as a daily, buy it on the last day for the regular discount.
Or just wait for the next Steam sale, since you've already got four dozen new games to not play.

Additionally, you'll frequently find package deals that amount to pretty huge discounts. Valve loves to arrange themed packs of four or five indie games for around $5. Those often come out so cheap that you feel bad for paying so little.

Fuck... I'm going to be without internet from the 30th until the 5th. FUCK LAST MINUTE FAMILY TRIPS.

I hope the summer sale doesn't start until the 4th.
