GFWL is useful for straight ports. This is a straight port. Twisted Pixel's involvement sounds minimal at best; the development was handled by Fire Hose and Panic Button Studios. The reason AoE II HD doesn't use GFWL, is because there is no point. It's not easier for them, like it is with Xbox games (where according to Sven of Capcom, 95% of system calls are the same). They didn't do it with AoE III and thus, it was to be expected that it wouldn't be the case with AoE II.The past 5 games Microsoft has published have all been Steamworks.
Its weird to see this one pop up, but I have a feeling that was due to developer choice. They are, most likely, uninformed about the PC space. Especially since they omitted including GFWL on the page.
As for the other games: Mark of the Ninja, Deadlight, etc. That's developer choice, coupled with the fact they're single player only games. They could have used GFWL, but they decided to put in the effort to integrate Steamworks. The option is still there for any developers looking to port their games, so GFWL isn't dead, even if the output is very, very minimal.
I know a lot of you will be raising your hands to the sky and screaming "why" with that statement, but that's just how it is. If you want to deter them from doing this, don't buy GFWL games and don't make exceptions (Dark Souls anyone?). A lot of fuss was made about GFWL in Dark Souls and how people wouldn't buy it if they didn't change it to Steamworks...what happened? It sold through the roof. Does that say to From Software/Namco, "Oh, we shouldn't use GFWL, it causes lower sale figures!". Nope.
