Going back to Civ III after playing a long (still unconcluded) Civ V match had a direct impact on my understanding of the former. Thanks to the more intuitive and friendly approach of V all the hidden aspects of III suddenly were brought to my attention. Somehow I had completely forgotten about vital micromanagement stuff like unit upgrades, science/entertainment sliders and food distribution. All of those are right there but you have to look for them individually; they're just not shown in the same way as V.

I'm having a much greater time with III being able to finally counterattack the bizantines (whom I'm neighbors with) running under Monarch difficulty. They love declaring war.
I liked how citizens can be controlled in 3, it was priceless to make half of population entertainers for cultural victory. The best thing about 3 actually was micromanagement. It was on other level from 2, on other hand 2 was harder to play and win than 3, more fun too. But 3 had nice features added, that's for sure.

I will gladly take a dump all over Strider if I think it's shit. Buying it day 1 and will call it out if I think it's crap. <3

Very much interested in you impressions on Strider, it surely looks great.

You know, I've installed metal slug 3 and played some.
Turning zombie it's still second worst thing, the first being bosses, damn those bosses! (><)

I have Strider on the MegaDrive and honestly I never liked it. A bit interested in this one though for its Metroidvania aspects. Main worry is that the visuals look a bit messy, a lot of effects being thrown out during combat.

gamersgate daily is Total War Shogun 2 -75%
http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-TWS2/total-war-shogun-2

Red Faction sale, everything -75%, including collection, but not all games redeem on steam.

spamming is amazing in 3.

fixed lol

Not turning chubby? That always killed me fast

Actually I died so much at the first boss (debut of a crab boss (><) I couldn't play, it was so funny, how he gets those spurs of being twice as fast and gets me, until you learn the pattern. Well you probably remember that, I didn't.
Bosses are worst, not all of them, but most are. It's really easy to die in this game, chubby or not.

Strider got an 8.75 from Game Informer
Awesome. That's a great score

Edit: You the same Iron Badger who was joking in the Strider Steam discussion about replayability/price/Mark of the Ninja?

It doesn't activate on steam, it's GFWL yes, at least as far as I know, it still is.

I truly feel like playing both Civ 1 and 2 only to go full circle with the series. I think it's something I will really enjoy since I'm quite the old-school gamer.

Civ related: This Community Hub screenshot is golden...

I tried to replay first one, some years back, just wanted to remember where it all started, well, it's really really hard to play now, not to mention that even running it can be a problem. It looks so minimalistic, so pure, if you know what I mean, like prototype or concept demo :)
Civ2 is more playable, and Alpha Centauri I even suggest playing now some, it's still great.

That screenshot is great (><)

Are there any other games similar to Ultimate General: Gettysburg? (Vote for it on Greenlight because it looks awesome)

Deep tactical gameplay, large scale battles with hundreds of soldiers, any time period is cool, not a ground level perspective like Mount & Blade, more overhead birds-eye command of the entire battlefield
(although if you could zoom in for a closer look at the battle, that would be cool)

It can be indie or not, doesn't matter

Aiming for intelligent A.I reactions

Nick Thomadis, aka Darthmod, used to be one of the most celebrated modders in PC gaming. That was, until he walked away to go and make his own game. From scratch.P

For some people, modding is just a hobby. A way to tinker with their favourite games. For others, though, it's a pathway to a career in the video game industry. The experience they pick up working with a particular game, or a particular engine, can see them snapped up by the company that actually owns it.P

Thomadis' story is a little different. For years, he'd been a leader in the Total War modding community, his Darthmod upgrades offering sweeping changes and improvements to Creative Assembly's ambitious, but often broken strategy games. While these extensive packs included visual and sound mods from other contributors, it was Thomadis' own work on the game's AI and gameplay that made the biggest difference.

Given the popularity of his mods, and the positive feedback they so often received, Thomadis had hoped the developers of the Total War series, Creative Assembly, would recognise his work and allow him to work more closely with them.

"I passionately loved Creative Assembly products, and dedicated huge amount of time to help make Total War games even better", he tells Kotaku. "Due to Darthmod's popularity I hoped for a closer collaboration with Creative Assembly (as for example Valve closely had cooperated with modders and content creators). This chance never came, my requests for cooperation were officially rejected and CA denied my participation in a modding summit."

Frustrated, he very publicly walked away from the Total War modding community entirely, a move which upset some given the way in which it was handled.P

"I felt very disappointed at that time", he says. "I wish though I could return to the past and change my overreaction, because honestly I had great time modding the fantastic Total War games."

Creative Assembly's loss might be PC gaming's gain, though, because Thomadis is taking his experience with the Total War series (and a love of military history) and applying it to a brand new game of his own. It's called Ultimate General: Gettysburg.P

An upcoming strategy game set during the famous 1863 battle, it's nothing if not ambitious, given this is Thomadis' first title and he's working with a small team. He's promising an accurate recreation of the actual map, a detailed and authentic order of battle for both armies and "innovative control mechanics".P

I'm most interested in the game's AI, though, since that's where the Darthmod packs really excelled. Perhaps put off by Creative Assembly's subtle reliance on the strategy gaming stalwart of "rock paper scissors" (cavalry beats archers, spearmen beats cavalry, infantry beats spearmen, etc) vulnerability, Thomadis is instead programming nine distinct "personalities" that AI generals can assume. Whichever one you're facing will behave according to that personality's preferences, and it's hoped stuff like elevation, morale and fatigue will be the deciding factors in a battle, not unit type.

All of which will be amazing if he can pull it off, but promising things before release and actually delivering them in a working game aren't the same thing, something Thomadis is having to come to grips with.

"There is one major difficulty in professional game development that does not exist in modding", he says. "In modding you have the freedom to make everything as you want with no ultra-strict deadlines and specific commercial goals. In professional design you have limitations in time, resources, and the major responsibility to satisfy the team's and producer's vision for the project's success and sales expectations."

Not that he's particularly worried. "My modding experience helped me to literally learn all the basics about game design and internal game processes", he says. Modding has taught him how to get everything working together in sync without bugs, how to balance gameplay, how to track and fix errors and how to find what players want from their game.

Fuck off CA for not hiring him.

Both your post and Authority's convinced me to vote for the game. I hope it gets released soon!

Steam half-dead for anyone else? Most pictures aren't loading, pages load very slowly and community sites are even worse with most of the content not loading at all.

I think that Gettysburg game is being developed by the prolific Total War modder behind the Darth mods.

I think he got fed up with Creative Assemblies lack of interest for modding which made the games preceding Rome hard to mod, and I think Rome is still impossible to mod in terms of creating campaign maps.

I just bought Alpha Centauri a coupe of days ago on that GOG sale. I'll play it for the first time this weekend and am really excited to do so; the positive feedback it's gathered all these years is overwhelming.

I totally get what you mean by the purity of Civ 1. That's how I usually feel whenever I decide to load up Dune II in order to complete a whole campaign. Old games have that magical aura surrounding them, it's quite the experience.

From that Strider Eurogamer review
Had this game been released a decade or two ago, it might have been seen as a classic of its type, alongside Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night. But today, at the tail end of a wave of Metroidvania-style games, Strider fails to stand out. It's a competent, workable game that draws inspiration from the right places, but which is rarely anything more than a cover version of the greats.
Isn't that some damn high praise? They make it sound like it's a negative

I like what I've seen in gameplay footage and dev interviews so far. However, the true test will be when I have it installed. I am a very picky man when it comes to action games
and fighters.
I don't trust reviewers at all when it comes to either genre. I'm better off asking a gold fish what it thinks of it.

Say whaaaaat? The projectile blood vomit is awesome, especially if your co-op partner is backing you up with it.

Sub Zero

his body's cold as ice, but he's got a heart of gold
It's really a shame that Greenlight is organized in such a way. It makes good and ambitious games like Ultilmate General be buried among the total garbage that 90% of Greenlight games are. Valve needs to change this ASAP or at least do a quality check for games that enter Greenlight

Well, these Strider reviews are making me think about pre ordering it. oh decisions.

Considering his user name, I'm going to guess his taste comes from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 2012 ED.

Which does support the idea he has good taste in general though.
Thanks for the compliment. :) Loved the manga, and loving the anime so far.

I have no idea why, but you should correct that and start watching the show.
Season 2 should be starting this April too!
If im not mistaken, its the author favorite song, and he asked for the studio to license it and use as the ending.

Do we no longer have an Origin megathread? Searched and couldn't find it.

Anyway, just refreshed my Origin client and got a 460MB NFS Rivals patch in addition to BF4 Second Assault. Anyone know what the NFS patch does? I'd guess DLC, but it'd be nice if it was actual game updates... perhaps the fix that officially removes the 30FPS lock?

Hmm, we haven't exactly been drowning in Metroidvania-structured titles lately so for me this would be a positice. Gonna see if there are some decent prices for it in a bit, I presume GMG at least has some voucher.

SE would probably make it complicated as fuck if they are giving out steam keys, like redeem a key on their website so you get another one to activate on your account and wait 3 days for the steam key.

and they will probably region lock all the keys and send out the wrong ones.
