I wouldnt recommend STALKER on Steam, its missing various graphical effects (well not missing, just not correctly "activated") compared to retail (retail installs a certain file in the save folder which turns on these effects correctly). Shadows and lighting etc look far better.
Do you have any link info about this? I never heard that. I believe the Steam version is one minor patch number behind retail but that just fixes a multiplayer issue...but I could be wrong.

Nah, it was never brought up, im pretty sure im the only person whose ever noticed it (as i had both retail and steam).

Things like the mouse aim not being precision sharp was another thing i noticed on the Steam version, it felt a bit wavy. Il try and find the comparison shots i put up on the steam forums showing what i meant.

There's the unofficial FLOAT32 mod that improves the graphics but I'm not sure what he's talking about either.

Ok here are my shots showing the difference between Retail & Steam. Both screens use the exact same in-game settings (1680x1050, Full Dynamic Lighting, Maximum settings).

Retail -

Its all because Steam doesnt include the "user.ltx" file which the retail install puts into the STALKER-SHOC folder, it instead generates a default one which looses all these effects (deleting this file from the retail version leaves the game just like on steam).

As i consider STALKER to be a game where the graphics greatly take part in the experience, i was a little miffed with Steam for not doing it properly, although no-one seemed to care :lol Ah well, for £3.50 its well worth it, just try and get that proper user.ltx file put in so everything shown as it should.

I kinda prefer the 'bad' version of what you posted. I have a big problem with the game on my laptop where the shadows are all screwed up, there is probably a fix, but I haven't had time to look into it.

Nicely done man! Yeah, there's definitely a problem with the steam install shadows and other missing stuff.

Does that matter if you're going to be using the Complete 2009 mod anyway?

I'm curious about that too because both version's screenshots you posted look hideous. I do already own a box and Steam copy of the game though :lol

What the... I'm trying to install the "STALKER Complete" mod at this very moment, but I'm having trouble with this:

3) In the "user.ltx" file change gloss factor to 2.5:

r2_gloss_factor 2.5

to find "user.ltx":

- XP users:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\stalker-shoc\user.ltx"

- Vista/Win7 users:
"C:\Users\Public\Documents\stalker-shoc\user.ltx"

- Steam users, follow the XP/ Vista/Win7 instructions, you have a dummy "user.ltx" in “_appdata_” that does absolutely nothing,
make sure you find the correct "user.ltx" in folders specified above.

The 3rd step is important, since textures were designed with gloss factor 2.5, therefore they only look correct with that value.
Make sure you backup your original "user.ltx" before making changes.
I can't find that file eighter! Seems like the people who made the mod got it working though...

EDIT: Actually I can't get the game working at all, just a black screen and then a crash to desktop... Oh well, so much for a STALKER replay :(

EDIT2: Ok, "Check file integrity" helped, working again :)

EDIT3: Ok ok, more STALKER adventure updates. I see now that I misunderstood that there is no user.tlk with the Steam release, it's just that it's the "wrong" one. Anyway, I happend to have both (retail and Steam) so I installed the retail instead. And wow, there is a BIG difference! Such a silly mistake! Anyway, I do have the retail config file here now in case people would be interested. As far as I can see it shouldn't be worse than just replace the Steam user.tlk with the retail user.tlk?

On the Aussie Steam it shows MW2 selling for 89.99 USD. Is this correct? Seems a bit steep or is it just another case of us Aussies getting the thick shaft?

Well with the aussie dollar so strong we couldn't have aussies paying much less online than in the shops now can we? It's a simple case of price gouging and as others have said MW2 will be a pile of shit anyhow.

I'm sure the gameplay itself will be great fun as usual, but I without a quality multiplayer environment I certainly can't justify its inflated price.

It's actually $90 US outside of the US. The price is not mutually exclusive to us Australians.

The Witcher Enhanced Edition 50% off today. Goddamn you, Steam!!!

FYI, this game has serious graphical problems on the new ATI 58XX cards. Basically unplayable, from what I've read. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future driver release, but be aware.

I just checked if Witcher could finally be buyable in Europe and the "This product is not available in your region" crap was gone. I could place it in shopping cart but when I try to pay I get an "Internal Error, please contact support". So it apparently can finally be bought from Europe, it just can't be paid right now.

Edit: The Witcher is on sale to celebrate worldwide availability. It's definitely available, steam just sucks dead dogs dick again.

Finally available in the UK, thank fuck for that. Got the retail version about half a year ago and despite occasionally being a buggy mess (I can only imagine how bad the original version must have been), it was one of the most enjoyable and entertaining games I've played in years. Just remember to save a lot.

Edit: Having the same problem as Absolute Bastard, can't seem to pay for it as of yet due to some error.

BOUGHT. I've been holding off since I really wanted to play this after getting a real gaming computer, so I guess I'll have to play it first on my laptop. I really hope it's playable on medium settings; I never go to low.

That's changed in the last hour....and now to spend more on Steam :lol

Preorders for Shattered Horizon are up, £15 or £13.50 if you preorder and preorders get early access to all new maps that are already planned and promised.

You see, this is the reason why you can't just shit on the PC community and expect to still get the sales like Activision believe they can. A multiplayer shooter with a much more interesting concept, which is much more innovative, with dedicated server support, free maps on the way, and much better graphics costs just over a1/3 of what MW2 does, and they're even offering a preorder discount (and goodies) on top of that.

The fact that Killing Floor (a game with a similar sort of value) just outsold MW2 more than 4:1 on MW2's preorder launch weekend.

Has Crysis ever been on a discount?

I'm hoping we get Warhead on deal soon, I just finished the original.
I would like to know this as well, I would like to pickup the Crysis Extreme edition, and have been waiting for a sale like their usual 25% off deals, but I can't remember if I have ever seen Crysis on sale like that before. I already checked my Targets for the clearence deals I heard about, my all my Targets are cleared out already :( I can't play the games all that well, but I want them in my back pocket for when I do upgrade or if I want to mess with the settings to get them playable. (720p with med affects seemed to work for me last time)

Gah, so it is available in the UK now? Bloody Steam! I've already spent too much money lately and I really struggle to play singleplayer games on PC but that is so tempting.

I have an ATI 4850, any problems I should be aware of?

You should be fine, AFAIK. The issues only affect the 58XX line of cards. I know because I have a 5850 and saw where people were having problems on the ATI forums. Great cards but there are some annoying driver issues right now. Hopefully they will be sorted soon.

Well that sucks. I guess I have 2 days to decide if I want to buy or not. 20 bucks isnt a bad price at all for this game so I may just buy and hold out on playing until ATI fixes the problem.

Anyone try The Witcher on Win 7 yet?

Did a quick search, seems people were having problems quite a while ago, I just wondered if it had been fixed yet.
