Does Steam suffer from server problems during big releases?
Well, when a big game is released it seems you get "The server is too busy right now, try downloading later." messages but it is no big deal.

I posted this in the Left 4 Dead 2 demo thread and got no response so I'll try here.

Are any trustworthy U.S. residents interested in pooling our money together and buying the L4D2 4-pack off steam? It comes out to around $34 a person if we do it. I'll be more than happy to handle the entire transaction and gift you the game if you want to send me your contribution through Paypal. Or if anyone else out there wants to handle the transaction, I'll be happy to paypal you the money for it.

Does it only work in America?

I'm Canadian and I have a friend who wants to go in on a 4 pack, but we can't find 2 more people.

You can paypal a person in america (in this case, bill0527) to buy the game and then he can gift one copy to you and another to your friend. You don't even need to be on eachothers friend list, as you can gift it through an e-mail.

If you guys are missing one person and you really want to make the purchase already, whoever paid for the game can gift himself (or a different e-mail account) and, as long as nobody reclaims the gift, you can later re-gift (in case you find somebody else that wants in the deal, but I don't recommend it).

I'm from Brazil and I worked both a Borderlands and a Left4Dead 2 deal with Gaffers, since I was missing one person for each pack. I was the one buying and gifting, so they sent me the money through paypal (and I paid the games through paypal, since I can't transfer funds from paypal to a Brazilian bank account), and we're all very happy.

While some games might not be available on your country (for instance, GTA is STILL not available for me on Brazil), if somebody gifts you the game, you can download it. This is how Australian people (who got the shaft and can only buy the censored version of Left4Dead 2) can get the American (uncensored) version - through gifting.

Game recommendation: History of Hammerfight

So I bought this game called 'the History of Hammerfight' for 6 euro's on Steam the other day. It's an indie game that was being advertised on the store front page. I had never heard of it before but the screenshots convinced me to try this game out. I'm glad I did; I'm really enjoying myself with this game, though it can be frustratingly hard at times.

The History of Hammerfight is a unique 2D action game that involves a cool physics engine: you control the movement of a little flying machine by moving your mouse (it's like the flying machine is your mouse cursor). The bottom of a huge weapon is attached to the middle of your flying machine. The weapon can swing around. In order to successfully attack with your weapon you must create momentum by making swinging/circular motions with your mouse/flying machine. The momentum decides how hard you hit. You fight other flying machines, dirigibles & insect-like creatures that come in various sizes. The game has lots of particles flying around during combat that are affected by the physics engine; enemies fall apart, people fall down, wall tiles can break loose, wooden walls can be burnt.
There are 3 different types of melee weapons: hammers, flails (chain & ball) and swords. There are also guns that you can combine to any of the melee weapons; it will attach itself to the bottom of your melee weapon. I find aiming to be very challenging.
You collect different weapons as you progress through the game. You can buy new weapons once you unlock the armory. Besides weapons there are also potions, armor and throwable weapons (ninja stars, daggers, spears, toxic vials) for sale. All your weapons are stored in the armory where you can try them out on a dummy. Carrying multiple weapons and armor will make your flying machine heavier.
You gain coins to buy stuff by finishing levels and during combat based on how well you're fighting. This reminds me of shoot 'em ups. Arcade style bonuses appear all over the place during combat. The screen can get really cluttered because of all the particles, bonuses & coins.
The game has a mixed selection of levels, like: escorting friendly dirigibles, protecting a fortress, boss fights, fights where you are chained to a wall, have no weapon and must dodge enemy attacks untill you hit a time limit & insect-like creatures constantly flying at you.
You will also unlock different game modes. I've only unlocked 'arena' so far, but I know there are more modes.
Fights can get very intense and the game is quite hard.

The game has a very nice & unique artistic design. I would describe it as Castlevania meets classic Prince of Persia with a little steampunk flavor. The backgrounds are very detailed and many levels have little animated people walking around, applauding or shooting at you. The graphics were a huge decisive factor for me to check this game out. I think anyone that has experienced the 2D glory days will love Hammerfight's graphics.

There's an ongoing story throughout the game with RPGesque dialogues. It seems that they did put some effort into it, but the English translation is a little off at times (this game was originally Russian). I didn't feel compelled to read it. I found myself skipping to the action everytime, that's what this game's about after all.

The game lacks some features that I would've liked to see in this release:
-online multiplayer, currently there is only local multiplayer using multiple mouses
-widescreen support

Even though the game is very enjoyable, it's still a little rough around the edges. No big, gamebreaking issues, but minor bugs & annoyances. Players post their suggestions and bug reports on the Steam forum, where the developer also posts. I'm not sure if he will do anything with them & continue to polish the game, but it's a good sign that he's active there at least.
There's a demo of the game @ http://koshutin.com/ (note the 'change to eng' link at the top).

A tip if you decide to check this game out: increase your mouse pointer speed in your OS settings. I always set it to max when I play.

If I could make my own topics, I would've made one and called it "Stop! Hammerfight!"

Actually, Teletubbies are not so bad. I'd rather kill Barney.
Actually back in the day there was a Doom mod that replaced the imps with Barney.

Works fine with US/CA people in the same pack.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know if it would work with Canadian residents as well or if I'd run into region gifting issues on Steam. So I'm open to any US/CA residents that want to get in on the 4-pack for L4D2. I've had one person show interest, but doesn't get paid until the end of next week. I'd like to do it in the next couple of days so I can get in on the demo, or I'll just go ahead and pre-order it for myself.

Or you could have played barney carnage on the mac many many years ago. It was just barney flying across the screen and you have a ton of weapons to kill him with.

Good times.

One of those Barney mods - might have been for Wolf 3D, might have been for DOOM, I can't remember - came with a 20+ page story in Notepad about Barney taking over the world. He corrupted or hypnotized all of the children with his show, and then had them do like a Children of the Corn and wipe out their parents.

The story had all sorts of other weird shit in it, like Barney turning kids into proto-Barney/Kid hybrids, Satan worship, and I think even some Barney rape? It was insane, and the greatest thing I'd ever read at that point in my life.

Thanks for the tip, I'd never heard of this game. I'm having a lot of fun with the demo from the official website. This game will almost certainly be my next purchase.

From what little I've played, it seems to me that if this were a Wii game, which I think it could be in terms of controls, it would be hailed as the kind of "hardcore" game based on innovative simple but deep controls that everyone wanted from the Wii. This game is right up my alley.

Maybe because these NVidia vouchers are not supposed to be resold, they're a bonus for people that bought the videocard.

If this person is selling them on the side, he's prolly also selling the videocard without them, which is probably illegal. :D
Mrbob said:
It is not. This vouchers are technically not for resale.

ah okay I wasn't aware of that before I bought one from him

when I'm running TF2 @ 1440x900. I am left with a black border on the right of my screen. is there something wrong with the HD4770 or do I have to adjust something I don't know?

when I run it at 13xx by 768 it stretches fine.

1440x900 is a 16:10 ratio. 1366x768 is a 16:9 ratio. I guess your monitor is 16:9, so just find the equivalent 16:9 ratio if you want to run a larger rez.

i know. my monitor is 16:10. I ran it fine when I used 2 other Graphics card.
Oh. Wouldn't it look oddly stretched if you gave it a full screen 16:9 resolution? If you want to keep it that way, you should be able to change the scaling in the catalyst control center. There will be sliders to force it.

Speaking of bugs, has anyone else's Steam client stopped showing the little update news notifier when an update downloads? It's kind of annoying since I have to manually check the update news for each game if I'm interested in updates for that game.

It might have stopped updating when the Windows 7 updates for Steam came out, not sure.

Ugh. i can't connect to steam. anyone else having trouble?

Had to reinstall Steam. Ugh. You think they wouldn't delete the games too ;\

Earthworm Jim series is up today, pack of all three games is 20$ (you can only buy the pack).

How are the PC versions of these? $20 is a touch pricey, but if they play well on modern OSes I'd nab the pack if it ever gets cheaper.

I'm assuming the telltale sale is only on downloadable and not physical?.

Discount is applied to the "+ Collector's DVD" options as well, you just have to pay the extra shipping.

1 and 2 run flawlessly on GOG.com's settings.

I recommend going with them anyway, since it's cheaper and you get cool bonuses like art and soundtracks and wallpapers. :D

Holy shit, $20 a piece for the earthworm jim? Fuck that. So expensive.
Nah, it's for all three. I thought it was for each at first, too, but it's not.

Still more expensive than elsewhere. O;
Gexecuter said:
That's pricey considering gog.com sells Earthworm Jim 1&2 at $5.99 and Earthworm Jim 3D at $5.99. I wonder why they sell them for more over at Steam.
Most likely because they can get away with it. Steam games in general cost more than on GOG, and Steam is undeniably more popular.

You sure? I added both to carts and only the digital went to $20...

Their store is a bit of a mess it seems, was able to get Sam&Max 2+DVD for $20 but other items advertisted as $20 show up at full price in the cart.

For Wallace&Gromit, try this: Add the free episode, then while still logged in go back to the W&G splash page and you'll be able to buy the Upgrade w/ DVD for $20... even though you never paid for the first episode. Note that DVD isn't out until next month.

Ah, apparently it is. Man, they should really change that show it just shows the collection. All I did was search and see each listed individually with a $20 price tag...

Edit: Argh, all are working except for strong bad.

They need to show the pricing better for Earthworm Jim; as I took one look at 16 quid for EJ1 and immediately turned around and left thinking it was laughably high - though even 16 quid for all three is a little steep tbh

£16 for all 3 EWJ games in the UK, think I will stick with the first one ported to iPhone for £3 thanks.
Ugh, I can't imagine anything worse than playing a game like EWJ on the fucking iPhone.

Somehow I missed out on basically all Valve games except Counter-Strike I thought it be fun to finally catch up. Apparently my old CD version of Half-Life doesn't support widescreen, so I'll have to re-buy it from Steam. Is Half-Life: Source the definitive experience? Are the old expansion packs (Blue Shift and Opposing Force) widescreen compatible? Are they even worth playing at all?

What's the better value? Half-Life: Source combined with the Orange box or maybe I should just go for the Valve Complete Pack? 90€ seems a bit steep.
