Question about Steam Community stuff, which I never really used before this week.

Am I missing something about Comment Notifications? So, say I make a passing comment on someone's Workshop project about their item, just a 'Good job, enjoyed the mod' or whatever... I now receive message notifications every time someone else comments on that same page??

Can I turn this off?

on the forum/workshop whatever discussion page there's a button in the top right that says 'unsubscribe to this discussion'

click it..

I think if you post it auto subscribes you but there's a checkbox to not do that (I think near the message entry window)

I hope I'm not being blind but, I don't see it. This is just in the Workshop item's page's general comments section by the way, rather than a discussion type section within the Workshop item's page.

I just tested it by commenting on a workshop item and maybe I'm blind too but I don't see anything either...

odd

You really want to take the discussion there?

I think he was just referring to the fact that since playfire rewards started and people could earn GMG credit faster they've pulled back the sales.. same reason why they stopped letting people use rewards and vouchers at the same time..

Just saw the 'Microsoft confirms Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity deal "has a duration"'

Like I said before, the exclusivity announcement just makes the whole thing stupid, stupid, stupid. Especially since now they gotta backpadel with confirmations like that.

Really beginning to despise Microsoft's corporate PR speak and their clear hatred of the PC as a platform for gaming.

I'm leaning more towards somewhere between batshit stupid and damn annoying, rather than odd, but yeah, ha.

I don't want green envelopes popping up just because random stranger #728 said lol to random stranger #2383. Why can I not turn this shit off? Agh.

GMG stopped having great deals long before that. Don't remember exactly when but there was definitely a period where the big games stopped being coupon eligible and you got cash back instead....and then they waned back on those offers.

Still decent things from time to time though, got Castlevania LoS for around 45 dollars which is certainly better than the 60 it went for.

This is gonna sound vague and maybe silly but I'm rather curious on how and why Console sales are more favoured over PC/Steam sales.

not to sit here and do something silly like defend MS but it's not like Sony and Nintendo are dropping their hot exclusives on PC, either. At least MS throws them on the platform, even if it's often a year or so after it's seen a console release.

Well the classic defense for the other two companies is that those games wouldn't have been made without them, which is really only true for one of them.

I'd rather have that than Sony's fake "we care for you gamers" attitude and timed over full exclusivity.

Silent Hill was DEAD without Sony guys!

Nintendo does not make PC hardware as far as my knowledge does and Sony has their own SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) which creates PC games (Planetside 2).

Yeah. Because we saw at E3 2013 they don't give a flying shit...

Sony and Nintendo get involved with the development of their exclusives. Microsoft does not. MS doesn't throw their exclusives for PC. They simply make deals that limit their availability and when those deals permit it then their partners release the games elsewhere.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Oh the Souls games are too much for me...but if it isn't too much like the Souls games I may get it.
How many keys' it going for and is it RoW?

Traders are a no-go. The sub is universal and activation-locked.

Edit: I was going to pre-order it next week but there are "Premium Edition" and "Season Pass Edition" subs in the registry, so I'll wait and see if they pop up on the store closer to release.

two things

like i said some moments are very well done, little gems in the game which i actually remember fondly and think represent very well what so many people praise so much about fo3. i can't remember them by name but there are 3 or 4 locations i really enjoyed. with that being said i don't think they carry over to the rest of the game so that's why my appreciation of the full game is so sour. it's a disservice to new vegas to say fo3 is actually that good in environmental storytelling.

now the spoiler stuff, i tried to not be too specific but yeah, i messed up. sorry about that.

I don't really see it as doing NV a disservice. NV really doesn't do much in the way of environmental storytelling. It's not about that, and it doesn't pretend to be. Its focus is squarely on the world that's sprung up after the apocalypse, and the people living in it now. The past is there mainly as a backdrop, to justify the Vaults and high tech weapons and mutant beasties in the setting, and provide some satire fodder, but you get the sense that the details aren't supposed to be important. That's an attitude NV inherited from FO1 and 2, IMO.

FO3, on the other hand, was far more rewarding for someone who was interested in what the world was like before the bombs dropped. For the first time in a Fallout game, the pre-war world wasn't just some lightly-sketched Strangelove-ish satire that the player was meant to smirk at. There were definitely satirical touches, yes, but I felt like the setting had an actual, believable history in 3, one that made sense, and the satire was dialed down to less immersion-breaking levels. Piecing together the history and downfall of the old world through computer records in ruined buildings, fragmented notes, audio recordings, and even newspaper clippings on the load screens was immensely satisfying. (And I know some of this stuff was sketched out in the Fallout bible prior to FO3, but FO3 seemed to a) actually take itself seriously (without being self-important) and b) conveyed the world's history to the player through environmental design and incidental details they could uncover while exploring, which contributed hugely to the atmosphere of the game). And then there were the little, more personal stories you could piece together from examining remains in the ruins - usually there was some context, rather than just bones scattered around, and some of the things you could stumble across were pretty poignant. There was some of that in NV too, mostly in the DLCs (a series of computer logs in Honest Hearts comes to mind - you know the ones), but it was much more of a FO3 "thing".

I liked Fallout 3 a lot, and I make no bones about that. As far as exploration and atmosphere go, the game was really a special experience for me. I understand why you prefer NV, given your feelings on FO1 and 2, but I think you're being a little too harsh on 3 .

microsoft does not directly take a cut from PC game sales. Windows is also very hard to control and microsoft knows that. they would much rather focus on xbox where they can control everything eg: only allow having access to MP by paying for XBL gold

I should've clarified by saying first party exclusives. MS is about to put Fable anniversary on the PC, and (according to capcom) they helped produce Dead Rising 3, another exclusive that's coming to PC. And we've all heard the hubbub surrounding the halo MMC stuff. Spartan Assault also came out on Steam not too long ago, too.

Again, I'm not saying that they're killing it on PC or anything, just that as far as their exclusive go, you can say "maybe i'll wait for the PC version" and not feel like a complete idiot whether it comes or not. The same can't be said about Mario or Uncharted.

Nintendo does not make PC hardware as far as my knowledge does and Sony has their own SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) which creates PC games (Planetside 2).

In regards to SOE, that's probably more to do with the viability of that studio's games on the PC platform vs Consoles. MMOs that are console exclusive don't exist afaik (well, they made some MMOish everquest games on the PS2 that went nowhere) so the fact that they launch that stuff on PC probably more due to the market for those games than anything else.

Sony and Nintendo execs don't come out every three months to tell PC gamers how dedicated they are to the platform. So there's not really the expectation there of Sony/Nintendo games coming to PC.

Exclusives are a funny old game and never really the same in one case to the next though there are some similarities. Ones where a publisher and/or platform holder is picking up the production bill because no one else was willing to are sadly the only way some games will see the light of day. While others like exclusive extra content are a bit tricky to gauge what is going on. Would have the GTA IV DLC been as expansive if Microsoft didn't involved? How much does Sony's involvement with Ubisoft go towards their '60 minutes of content' never found on Xbox or Nintendo platforms (despite more often than not popping up on PC)? Regardless platform holders are going to leverage exclusives as the main reason for them is to sell their box. I'm not a particular fan of them but knowing (or not in most cases) the context behind the deal is something I try to bear in mind.

host a LAN party

Use one for 24/7 porn, the other for gaming and the other for gaf browsing.

Ha thanks for the ludicrous suggestions but I've been picking enough nits at the moments with my own use cases. Though I do have enough at the moment to make a full length mirror out of if combined with a web cam.

Though having a monitor that has 3 times the static contrast of the others makes it really hard to go back to anything else without the others looking saturated and grey in their gradients and shadows. Just a shame the horizontal and off centre viewing angles, colour accuracy and shift, uniformity, response times, input latency and whole host of other gripes aren't up to scratch.

i'll give you that, but what else is the company behind the world's biggest OS going to say? "naw, fuck 'em, PC gaming is garbage and we don't give a shit?" Nintendo and Sony don't even get those questions because it makes no sense to ask it to them, or at least less sense than it does to ask MS about them given what their main business is and that they actually have a history (both good and bad) with PC gaming.

We all agree that GFWL was a fucking stupid, stupid move on their part but in the end, they made good PC games/ports before that and they'll keep bringing stuff out after it, too. Just cross your fingers that they don't get any more terrible ideas.

I don't think it sold well. I did my part and made 2 giveaways of it I think.

it came so close to being in the summer sale, too, but NOOOOOOOOO he had to have two concurrent Alan Wake sales instead.

you know, alan wake, that game you got for a $1 in a humble bundle 2 years ago.

Yup I just got fucking scammed.

Sorry to hear about what happened, Shadownet.
Just remember, not everyone out there is a heartless scumbag dickweed that should rot in hell.

It's like Square Enix shot themselves in the foot or something.

Let's evolve the meme.
"They nailed their foot to the floor with an arrow" or something.

So do the cards for Defiance really drop ? Trying right now.

One, at least.

Gamersgate is doing another Warhammer Franchise sale.

Another Perspective steam keys now in the Groupees Retro 3 Bundle
