Excellent.

I will try to watch your stream tonight, night shift at work so will keep an eye out for it.

The cross shaped bump on the left pad is way shallower than I expected. It's very subtle, you can barely feel it. It looks more pronounced in pictures than it is.

Btw these come with batteries included. Thats a nice touch.

You can check it out right now with an Xbox 360 keyboard, it's not limited to only the steam controller. It's unfinished at the moment, however. It's less of a pop up keyboard and more of a keyboard window, although the barebones nature of the menu suggests it's still a work in progress.

I see the option, but I can't get it to work. It crashes Steam when I select the option :( Tried it with Shadowrun Hong Kong and Divekick

Ive never looked forward to a controller more than this ever

I remember being pretty excited to try out the Wii Remote when that was announced (Wii Sports was so good, especially the Tennis at launch), but this seems like it will be infinitely more useful than the Wii Remote.

Being able to have more accurate aiming controls on a controller is something I've wanted ever since I switched my PC from my desk monitor to my living room TV. And being able to play older PC games without worrying about complicated control mapping is going to be fantastic.

Welcome to the new age of controllers - ones that can update:

When you first pair your steam controller, you have to do a sort of tiny QTE too, haha.

Finol's MGSV setting has the right pad as a mouse and sensitivity down low. I turned it up high and the resolution on the pad is nuts, one swipe turned the camera around twice.

Changed it to trackball mode and you now have spinning inertia.

IMU settings don't seem complete yet, they share the config menu with the touch pads (as in, they just copied and pasted the touchpad config menu for the IMU config menu), but it works. Just tested it out, I set resting my finger on the right touchpad to activate the gyro. If I set it to the ADS button, this would give me splatoon-style aiming control.

Currently you can map the IMU to just about anything, from a keyboard press to mouse input to joystick axises to even a scroll wheel.

Im definitely going to have to go ahead and purchase one of these, looking forward to reading more impressions.

Has there been any word as to whether or not it's possible to use the thing as the main input device for your computer as a whole? Like browsing the web and stuff with a steam controller because why not?

I'm alt tabbing to neo gaf and using the steam controller as my mouse when doing so. I am about to hit "submit reply" on this post with the controller. Yes, it works in normal windows.

EDIT: Boo, I just quit steam and the controller stopped responding. Dunno if I need steam open to use it. When Steam was open, I could use it in normal windows like a mouse. The second I closed it, it stopped responding. I'll try it on an old computer here later on, the prototype didn't behave like that. It didn't need steam open to work.

Just rebooted and didnt open steam, this time the controller worked as a mouse even with steam not started. I guess what happened in my last post was a bug. Glad this works even without steam running.

Default legacy mapping when steam isnt running is weird. Analog stick is mapped to arrow keys, xyab is mapped to fre and space. Left and right click on triggers. Shoulder buttons, grips, left touch pad, and touch pad buttons dont seem to do anything. Start is mapped to escape, back to tab. Analog stick click doesnt seem to do anything.

Arg, take it back, steam was running in the tray. Quit and controller stops responding. Seems you do need steam running for this version, cant use it without steam present.

Steam interface has custom mappings for controller. In your library, left and right trigger's digital press advances you through alphabet. So a, b, c etc.

Playing titanfall with the controller, works great. Again, if you launch it thru steam, the bpm interface follows, so I can bring the mapping interface up over the game.

This may be slightly challenging, but is it possible to post some pictures of yourself holding it in different poses (thumbs on pads vs stick/buttons)? I'm sure it probably doesnt, but it looks like those lower horns would jab into the fleshy part of the palm.

Also, how comfortable is the final controller? Comparable to any particular console controller?

When I livestream tonight, I will have a cam feed of my hands while I play in the corner.

Controller feels good. Stick and buttons are a bit more to the center than you'd expect, but I have no problems reaching all the buttons. My hands are average size, i'll measure my thumb lenth later.

Are you streaming?

Not yet, just dinking around

a demonstration of the different mouse and sensitivity settings:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyoGhIsd4Mc&feature=youtu.be

In the first part, the right pad is set to mouse and lowest sensitivity, then I flick from one side of the pad to the other with my thumb to show you how far it travels. Mouse mode doesn't have any spin, so as soon as you leave the pad, it stops moving.

Then I turn the sensitivity all the way up (on the steam controller, not in MGSV) and put it into trackball mode and do the same thumb flick.

The difference is dramatic.

It's a pity Steam has to be running, but the other details sound good.

The main bummer is this means I can't use it on my really old PCs or dreamcast or android anymore. But on my PC, I use steam BPM as my main interface, so it's always running. I just played an origin game - Titanfall - with the controller and it works great. For like 99% of people out there, this isn't a problem.

But it's a huge bummer for me haha. Luckily I have two steam controller prototypes, which I can now retire to be my dedicated "old machine" steam controllers.

I'm getting so used to GOG Galaxy that I'm not looking forward to running all those games bootleg style in Steam. But at least their big picture library interface is improved recently.

I'm also glad they kept the old big picture input method with the daisy wheel, not sure why they didn't make that the default though. It's really the quickest way to input with a controller once you get used to where the letters are.

Hah, very cool!

That's unfortunate that the controller doesn't function without steam running anymore. I agree that it effects a minority of users, but still a cool selling point.

Quite like the look of the inertia of the trackball rather than the instant stop of the mouse only mode.

Looking forward to seeing you try out a fps games once you are fully comfortable with the controller.

Mines will arrive on the 16th of October. Need to order my new CPU and motherboard soon, otherwise I will be using a rubbish laptop at first.

Wait it doesn't function at all without steam on? Like if you booted a non-steam game it wouldn't register at all? I mean I didn't expect it to control my whole computer but that sucks!

I was hoping to use this to control my mouse in Windows from my comfy couch :'(

You can still do that, steam just needs to be running in the tray.

Lol finol's config is nothing like the xbox config. Got caught and immediately died because I dove on the ground. Gonna set up my own mapping.

Settle yourself down, this is the PC, someone will make it work.

No, so long as steam is open in the tray, it will work. I am controlling my desktop and firefox with it, and played titan fall, an origin game, with it.
