STEAM | December 2014 - Read OP for winter sale questions

I think that wording is just bad. They aren't going to bring back GFWL. They are probably going to talk about DX12, and maybe some ports of old console titles.

GFWL is already back under "Xbox Games" branding. Currently Windows Store exclusive. (so, Windows 8+ and Windows Phones).

Now that Halo MCC is out on the Xbox One, I hope this means they'll be releasing it on Steam as well.

Believe.

If they announce MCC for windows while it's still broken on the XB1, well, you might as well shut down Gaming because it's going to be pure fire and garbage over there.

Also, i made +$7 on my card purge last night. No regrets, couldn't take a chance that every card was going to go for .03 in a post-gem world. I'm legit scared of what they're gonna do with gems next.

Nope. You are seeing the cd key sub. It only applies to cd-keys. The sub of the store version is the same for everyone and it has ACRTAG applied.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Waking up to the Steam market devastation of yesterday. It's good to see that I still have my 21 remaining gems even though they're currently unusable. Also good to see I still have my Steam wallet funds - there was a very real possibility that they could have simply fixed it by rolling all market transactions backwards from yesterday.

I hope the issue with the gems gets fixed and they bring back the items -> gems -> auction meta game. Unfortunately I think their "turn gems into booster packs" was a severely flawed plan, at least in the iteration I saw last night.

I commented last week that the average price of a booster pack was $1. If they want to maintain that price while having fixed gem values on items, they need to charge WAY more gems to get a booster pack. Even the boosters that cost 1200 gems were far too cheap - that's only 12 profile backgrounds. Those 12 profile backgrounds would net you $0.12 on the market (after fees) meaning it would severely impact the market value of booster packs. Hell - buying the backgrounds for $0.03 each and turning 12 into gems was still cheaper than buying most of those booster packs.

If we see this feature come back, the only way it can be done without tanking the market would be for booster packs to cost 10,000 gems. That's 100 x $0.03 profile backgrounds or emoticons which are worth approximately $1 when sold. The better way to fix it would be for the item's "gem value" to be approximated based on the item's market value. Suddenly that "guarded" background from CS:GO is only worth 5 gems (instead of 100) and buying them in bulk to consume them is a much more risky proposition.

An interesting market crash, for sure. Hopefully the folks at Valve learned from this experience.

so what happened

-Valve creates gems, a means of exchanging your junk items for something of value. also meant to reduce the amount of items on the market, with the goal of raising the value of remaining items.
-They sell sacks of gems for .03, and you could flip those sacks for booster packs.
-card market starts crashing as everyone and their mother starts buying sacks of gems and making booster packs. People who have valuable cards dump them in fear of not getting a decent return on them
-volvo regrets everything, removes gems from the market and stops development of half life 3 as they ran out of money.

"@XboxP3 @RpLayy Please do not bring xbox exclusive to pc.Do not let us regret spending our money on a xbox one.Exclusive=only xbox."
If games not being full exclusives anymore somehow devalues your purchasing decision, then maybe buying xbox in the first place was not a smart decision?

Really pitiful to see people get joy out of exclusion of others. Humanity can really reach very deep lows.

The Russian Ruble is almost dead, unbelievable. During summer 99rub were ~2,10€. Two or three weeks ago we were at 1,5€ and today it's 1,38€. Which of course means older games that aren't region/trade locked have become even cheaper than before, Shovel Knight is below 5€ for example.
Bad news for Russia. Great news for me.

I forget, is there a limit to how many keys you can modbot at once?
There is not but there is a character limit which could about double after modbot's edits your original posts ones. You gotta keep that in mind.
I recall JaseC giving away several hundred games and modbot just not being able to edit after a certain point the winners.

You should be easily safe to up until 200 though.

I ended up writing a Steam review for Run or Die.
I found this game to be quite fun. It's simple yet addicting and requires more skill and thinking than it could seem at first sight.
Nice impressions.

Kinda bummed market wouldn't let me buy any sacks. Would have been cool to have more card sets and craft badges. I needs the friend lots :D

Jazzpunk, Castleminer Z and Project Temporality are really horrible, buggy, bad, despicable games and noone should enter for those...

I'm just trying to look out after my gaf-bros >_>

Also, inventory gems are back, but the amount I "bid" is still missing.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
i wouldn't be surprised if they forgot a zero when doing the booster exchange stuff and that's what made things nutty.

That's kind of what I was thinking as well. I think they also screwed up by making the gem value for items based solely on the game, rather than the item's rarity or market value. A lot of worthless things ended up being worth more than other items that were quite rare (like poop and weed emoticons). I can see what they were trying to do - more valuable items for Valve games means higher trading volume and thus further scarcity which raises future market values. In all it means that a game like CS:GO (which traditionally had the most number of items on the market) would become more profitable. Remember - Valve gets $0.02 of your $0.03 sale because they own the market and they are also the publisher.

The problem is that taking those items, turning them into gems, and buying a booster pack for 12 of them and selling the cards for $2.50 (which I did last night with one booster) is a good way to bring the market value of everything to come crashing down.

I disagree, I think the only reason bags of gems dropped to the point they did was because of the duplication issues, and that volume is what pushed the card market down. If 1000 gems costs roughly 30 cents that scales most cards to be worth roughly 10 cents, which is about where the market has settled. Does that mean higher card prices come down faster? Yeah it does, especially for f2p games. But there would still be a floor that is actually higher than what bundles push cards to as it is. If you make it 10 times as many gems for a booster then it becomes worthless to even bother taking the time to do it.

I think their exchange rate would have been fine if not for the fact that probably a thousand times as many gems were generated last night as should have been (maybe even more than that). Most people here wouldn't have even participated if not for the market flood, I know I certainly wouldn't be sitting with over 90k gems right now and I don't think most people would be.

As for if Valve learned anything... I really doubt it. The fact that this happened at all shows they haven't learned anything from the myriad of other issues they've had in the past. The fact that they didn't shut things down the moment they began to go wrong and roll the whole thing back shows they didn't really care about the long term impact either. And most importantly, the fact that they'd try to do a significant new feature impacting the entire ecosystem the week before the biggest sale of the year is utterly insane.

also if any of those keys doesnt work, well...I dont give a fuck. Sorry :p

As far as I know they are all unused, most are humble and indiegala links and you can see if those are used, and the rest are bundlestars and groupees keys that I didnt give anyone. So unless I was hacked by north korea, they should work

edit: also, its multientry...like, seriously, take them or they'll just get lost in the gaf void, Ive already deleted all the emails and shit. use them for cards at least, DEM CENTS ADD UP

-_- guilty as charged

your shadyness just earned you a spot on my xmas list

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I can agree on some areas, but I still think booster pack generation was too cheap - glitch or no glitch. Sure, it was ridiculous when 1,000 gems were $0.03 and that was enough to buy a booster pack. But mot of the booster packs I made last night weren't even 1,000 gems - they were in the range of 450-550 and that was for games like Final Fantasy XIII, Ragnarok Online EU (which I made the most money from), and other anime-type games. Even at 550 gems, that's 6 CS:GO backgrounds or $0.18. The only thing that does is drives the card prices down for these games and normalizes it with every other game. I suppose if that was their goal from the beginning, that's one way to succeed.

I agree that Valve probably learned nothing and you're right that introducing a feature like this a week before the sale started was ill-conceived.

I disagree, I think they are learning a lot. These things are basically economic experiments which would be hard to do in the real world at this scale, so the results are hard to predict 100%. Their events are always different enough to gather more data about market behaviour once you introduce new mechanics or change variables. It's incredibly interesting imo.

This time things just went a bit too far because of the dupe glitch. I doubt things would have gotten out of hand this much otherwise.

Personally I think the value gems should be tied to the value on the market and boosters should be as well.

make it as close to 1:1 as possible and you wouldn't even need to prevent people from crafting boosters from a single set over and over because they lose money if they tried to sell.

Well, that's testing Modbot's limits for sure.

Thanks, by the way!

I think limiting people to one booster per game restricts a lot of that. But yeah, I definitely agree with your other point that setting the point values to be randomly by game made no sense, and should have taken market value into account. I mean, Defiance of all games has backgrounds worth 100 points. Defiance?

The glitch is the whole point. You can't say "things would have been fine if they didn't go wrong." Things always go wrong. And not only did they go wrong, they went wrong several times, in a few different ways. Every MMO ever has had duplication glitches, it's one of the most common issues around. It's something they should have been looking for and expecting. Hell, it's not like they've fixed all the market issues before this, it wasn't even a month ago that the market was broken for several days on items that aren't on the buy order system.

I'm not saying it wasn't interesting, because it certainly was. I found the whole thing amusing and I'm sure if I was at Valve looking at the tens of thousands of dollars they made last night, I'd probably be laughing hysterically. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a bad decision, poorly implemented, and worthy of criticism.
