STEAM | December 2014 - Read OP for winter sale questions

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
You can use Steam to broadcast Non-Steam games too, if you add them to your library. Just tried with Diablo III.

You can alter the settings so that you can also broadcast your desktop.

I enjoyed Viking on the 360 like 7 years ago. It does not have as many combos as other games in the genre but the huge open world makes up for it. I would replay it but isn't it locked to 30fps? Or is there a fix?

Ok, fine Sega, I'll play your stupid sonic game. This is the one people say is actually good, right? If it isn't, all the sonic fans are officially dead to me.

guerrilla is one of my favourite games last gen!

Guys, I actually played a few games! Impressions!

Secrets of Raetikon:

This game is pretty. I really like the art style, and it's pretty cool that you play as a bird. The controls and mechanics set it apart. I was kind of hooked through my first play session, as it's very engaging. However, it becomes apparent that it's a key collectathon with a ton of backtracking. Unless I'm missing something, I go in a particular direction, overcome the cool puzzles and combat, earn a bell/key thing, and then have to fly all the way back to the main hub area to deposit it. Too much backtracking for my tastes. I do want to give it another try though, as it left a pretty positive impression. I just see myself getting annoyed by that mechanic.

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure:

Wow, this game is pretty great for a buck or two. I actually don't want to spoil a lot of the fun, but this plays as a mix between Oregon Trail, a roguelike, a schmup. It's basically a sidescrolling shooter with different weapon pickups and a somewhat-randomized playthrough with unlockable wagons. Not terribly long, but it's challenging, unique, and charming.

header.jpg

Adventure Time: Secret of the Namless Kingdom:

This game is A Link to the Past from SNES. Give someone the Adventure Time license and tell them to clone / pay homage to that game, and this is that. Not really much more to say, other than they nailed it. If that sounds like fun to you, or you're a big Adventure Time fan, you'd enjoy it.

It's kinda good if you turn off Sonics shitty friend. After the first great level there's a cutscene with more of Sonics shitty friends that you can skip. After that there's a shitty Sonics shitty level but also some good Sonics good levels. It's okay

Uh oh. This is all going to end in tears very, very soon. Considering you can name non Steam games anything there will be quite few nasty surprises I'd imagine.

porn gifs. porn gifs everywhere.

It makes me wonder how heavy-handed Valve will be with their enforcement of the rules that are listed in the FAQs support article.

From a purely economical standpoint:

The average selling price of booster packs on Steam right now is $0.9924936823314644. Let's call it $1 for simplicity sake. Currently the lowest selling items on the store are $0.03 (due to Valve's fee) but in reality your cut is $0.01. So theoretically, 1 booster pack from a random game is worth approximately the same as 100 worthless profile backgrounds/emoticons/whatever.

If Valve's goal is to just allow people to "delete" these items, I expect there will be a 100/1 ratio. This makes the most sense, because $1 is merely the average: some are worth more, and some are worth less. So like a lot of Valve-things, it'll be gambling.

If Valve's goal is to increase the value of said worthless items, there will be a less than 100/1 ratio. Maybe even 50/1.

Whatever the outcome, there will still be a direct relation between items and booster packs. Therefore we can reasonably expect the price of one or the other to fluctuate based on ratio of items required to make a new booster pack.

I was more thinking about card market. Let's say you can make a booster by scrapping 3 cards (any) and you get random booster, that would make card prices skyrocket, and that can be Valve's plan as they are making money from every card sold, then again, cards are destroyed this way, and boosters sold instead, some boosters are dirty cheap, some are really expensive, they can partly influence this by making cheap boosters appear much more often or even always.
Other way to go about it, is to make selling still more profitable than scrapping, if scrapping isn't made ridiculous 1 booster for 100 items is ridiculous, all steam items, including backgrounds and emotes would start to sell, meaning Valve gets even more money. You may ask what's not ridiculous? Anything bellow 20 would be acceptable, actually, it would make marked go haywire for a while, but when items in people inventories end, you had to craft badges to get more or buy them. So everything sells better in the end.
If they make 100:1 as you think, this won't change a thing, I think.

Castlevania Lords of shadow, fucking amazing, played 10 hours already, its hard to let the hands of the controller. Great combat system, amazing pacing, great graphics, more than decent story. Easily one of my best purchases and one of the best (if not the best) game si played this year. And i am not even through the first half of the game, awww yeahh!!

I thought it was a bit slow in the first few chapters, ch. 2 in particular. It improves dramatically after that though, and I loved everything from around ch. 4 and on. Enjoy!

TT's GoT is downloading now, fuck the potential wait between episodes, TWOW has me used to it.

Also, Amazon needing me to do an online test for internship, it would be rather handy if this works out for me all things considered, would be a rather neat place to get I think, even if it does involve moving to Edinburgh for the summer.

That reminds me, should give Rockstar North another e-mail, why not?

IDK, wouldn't it end cheap cards? It would be more beneficial to make a booster and hope for a high value one, instead of selling cheap cards.

If the point was to end cheap cards I would hope that the solution would involve making the user levels more appealing/worthwhile in some way. My old suggestion was for Valve to bring back Steam Chess and also other new board/card/tile games (multiplayer and single player) and attach them to specific user levels to induce people to use their cards to create badges and raise their levels up. Steam GO/Chess/Bridge/Solitaire/Battleship/Shanghai Mahjongg/Shogi/Backgammon etc. Why not make Steam the easy place to go to and connect with friends to play these very popular classic games? It would increase the value of cards and the related marketplace, draw people into using the Steam client more, and make leveling actually worthwhile.

How do you decide to stream? I'm playing Bad Rats now, can you watch me? What if I don't want you to watch me?

You can change the settings. At default you need to approve everybody who wants to watch you. But you can change that to "Everybody can watch" "Nobody can watch" and something else

Well, as I mentioned: if their goal is to simply allow you to "delete" (recycle) items of no value into items of value, then turning 100 items into 1 booster pack makes sense as that conversion is done (on average) without losing any value in the market.

If their goal is to increase the value of the marketable items, then they would need to have something lower than 100:1 ratio. However, if they go too low like your 3:1 ratio it would more likely than not only accomplish tanking the price of booster packs, which would in turn tank the price of trading cards. If I could turn 3 worthless profile backgrounds into a booster pack that becomes 3 cards, then cards will become as worthless as these worthless profile backgrounds once the market averages.

Well, unless you change the settings to allow everyone to watch it - you should get permission requests from each person on your friends list.

Though I'm not sure if we need to request for each game differently or what. Guess I'll find out more when Chariot gets back.

This is why they hired that economist.

Yep, except they let him go in early 2013. Yanis Varoufakis is now simply a "private consultant" to Valve.

It's not a bad idea, but as in anything with huge people masses there would be a lot of people that don't play board games and won't play and bitch about it. At least everybody can buy levels if they choose so, so nobody complains, at least not much.
I do agree that steam levels are somewhat useless, especially with this new update for booster packs, if it'll work, even more so. But I'm not sure what would make levels useful, it's not and RPG we are talking about (><)

I just realize something tricky about the new broadcast thingy. You need to have a steam account in order to watch streams. If you go into incognito mode and try to watch a stream without logging in, it just sends you back to the community main page.

This could bring some new users before the winter sale. Very clever valve, very clever.

Ah, I didn't know about that.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, then. The best thing for the player will essentially tank the economy, but the best thing for the economy will ensure very few players use it.

Maybe someone here can help me: recently, i started using two monitors. loving it. I did a little but of research and found some programs to force borderless fullscreen on games.
i discovered a program called Borderless gaming. works as intended, but i cant make it start with windows. i read on the program github that it could be because windows ignores games that need administrative rights. Any tips? If not, any suggestions on a better program?

but you forget one very important thing, we have a lot of useless items because we were getting them for two years crafting badges, using cards, when those items are gone, and they will be gone with this scraping pretty fast, you need to craft badges that require more than 3 cards to get anymore of them.
I can't wait to see what Valve decided to do with this, to make all items sell higher, or just get rid of unwanted items or cheap cards that don't sell.

You also can't broadcast unless you've bought something from the Steam store, according to the FAQ.

Not sure if someone would get a steam account just to watch streams though? Especially with Twitch being a thing.

So how does this work? I mean I have zero problems with people watching me play games, that's their loss of time and sanity, but if I set it to "everyone can watch" then will I see any performance hit on my end? I can't imagine this comes free from a performance point of view.

new games for humblebundle in 40 minutes, right?
I am really banking on Alpha Protocol. It is the only reason I bought the bundle at all and at tier 2 to boot!
New humble SEGA bundle games
  • Sonic Generations
  • Viking
What. The. Heck.

This is one of the worst bundles I ever bought.

God. Why wouldn't they put Alpha Protocol in it?
Or better. Why don't bundle-sites have older bundles on sale from time to time?

Interesting. Wonder how much Valve is willing to invest in servers for good bandwidth.

From the FAQ:
qHbxAcl.png

Yup. All kinds of weird personal stuff unintentionally being shared incoming!
NntWvaN.png

This is not practical. There should be a hotkey/overlay button to disable boradcasting on the fly.
Most people don't have high bandwidth and not being able to disable while in-game is just cumbersome.
Steam Broadcast chat delay is ~10 seconds.
That is much, much better than tiwtch or hitbox. Super.

Btw Guerrilla has cards now.

Idle now for maximum profit.
Ah. Now I see why frost is "playing" the game. ;)

Also, you guys should all know that corrosivefrost is one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

List time? List time.
around $9
CoD Black Ops 2 + CoD World At War
How in the world did you get these for so cheap o_o
I payed almost 20$ for blops2 and it was the cheapest the game ever was.

You did crave in Game Dev Tycoon & Among the Sleep? Didn't you want to wait till winter sale at least? Hah, you're weak! :p

Finally back. Steam sale didn't look that impressive from what I saw, but then maybe I'm just holding out for the Winter Sale.
Welcome back \o/
You did the right thing with waiting till winter.

Hey, I cannot help being a bit more cautious when posting here. There's a lot of times I delete replies because they are not tactful.
Being honest is good but some need time to acclimate. And you wouldn't wanna have the real me here all the time anyway ;)
