For AAA it was a bad year with a few exceptions, especially if you look at the fall, like most GOTY awards do for some reason.

I can remember way back in November lamenting how awful a year 2014 had been. I've even bought more non enticing games since then as well.

All joking aside if you only owned PS4 or XO and didn't look any further than them then it probably was a pretty barren year but that's a pretty blinkered view. WiiU has had a pretty good year on it's own but for the PC it's been ker-ray-zee! There has been a good handful of releases for just about anyones tastes.

Yeah, I think it's mostly PS4/X1 users disappointed with their shiny new toy. I doubt owners of WiiU, handhelds or PC are complaining.
Even the AAA front had several outstanding games. Alien Isolation is fantastic, I'm still amazed by how well that one turned out. Wolfenstein is one of the best FPS campaigns in recent memory. Then there's The Evil Within, Dark Souls 2, Ground Zeroes, Dragon Age Inquisition... I mean, come on.
One of the things that stand out to me this year is the gorgeous 2D art I had the pleasure of seeing. Child of Light, Transistor and The Banner Saga were both great games and works of art.
On the 3DS I was finally able to play SMTIV (Yurop) and Persona Q turned out even better than I expected.
The Vita got DanganRonpa 1&2.
I also enjoyed The Wolf Among Us, loved the atmosphere and characters.
Great year for me.

What annoys me most with the "this year sucked" posts is the fact that those people only take into account the stuff they played.
I don't own a WiiU but I've seen enough of Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8 and Tropical Freeze (and also from having played the prequels) to know that these are fantastic games and that a year with releases of this caliber has to be a good year.
What sucks is not being able to afford every piece of gaming hardware, not the overall quality of the games that were released.

I sure hope you don't pick W101 or Bayo2 as you really need to learn the mechanics to a tee in those two games even on the lowest difficulty. Once you get in a zen like focus and realise that there are audio and visual cues as when to parry and when to dodge it does become like second nature and can take on a whole host of foes at once. But hey just as long as you're enjoying yourself that's the main thing.

Nothing worse than a poorly optimised game running on the Unity engine. Blows my GPU to bits.

Hey I could have been a sole WiiU owner this year and still be happy as a pig in shit but 2014 alone has brought a load of stuff over that either I wouldn't have played due to not owning an Xbox One and can now ditch my PS360 versions of a load of ports that came PC's way, pretty much every one now being the definitive version (even FF XIII and XIII-2 regardless of what others say). Though no one said you have to buy everything in sight! Well unless there's some larvae that burrow their way into your cerebral cortex forcing you to buy everything on the store.

Unless something is radically different in Bayonetta 2, I beat Bayonetta on hard using a single combo for more than 95% of the game.

Try doing that on Non Stop Infinite Climax and see how you get on. Saying that you can cheese Master Ninja mode on Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 using Izuna Drop for the most part. I think I beat DMC 3 with Agni and Rudra spamming the same 3 button combo over and over again on Normal. Not Special Edition scrub Normal mind but OG Normal.

Where do people hear such things? PA has gotten update every month since it became available for purchase.

It's great. It's got a ludicrous amount of content, and has felt pretty feature-complete for a long time.

It's fun because it's really flexible. You can make a "nice" prison genuinely focused on rehabilitation and prisoner care, or a brutally oppressive panopticon designed to break their will and spirit. Both routes can actually lead to a well-functioning prison. And both are fun in their own way.

Ah I'll keep an eye on it.

Oh certainly wasn't fun but my wimpy shield and low stamina at the time was an even less fun experience of getting harpooned left, right and centre every time. That first time in Anor Londo is stuff of nightmares for the unprepared.

I think one of the most impressive things about Unity over pretty much anything else at the moment is that it's an open world game. Ryse does have some very pretty characters (granted I've only just mucked about with the opening segment) but it's pretty much a corridor shooter brawler. Granted Unity does still have some of the set backs with bering open world like LOD transitions are geared more for performance in quite a few instances rather than looks (not just textures as sometimes you can see shadows gradually being added as you get closer to a light source) but the way a scene is lit and shaded appropriately based on the objects and materials is crazy.

Ryse looks more realistic I think, maybe it's because it looks a lot less saturated overall, but Unity just looks fantastic on those screenshots, it looks cartooney but really nice and inviting.

I don't know why but Ryse's graphics never impressed me, it may have just been the art and environment design, like I thought Crysis 3 looked impressive but people told me Ryse is graphically superior than most of those games out prior to it.
