Steam Holiday Sale 2009 Begins! (Dec 22nd - Jan 3rd)

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

That was my exact train of though, 10 seconds later I own it. Holy crap, Steam has us by the balls. :lol
Yeah, I somewhat regret my decision to let Steam hold my CC info, I really do.

Now all it takes is a sniff of a deal and before I can think "Wait, will somebody please think of the children", it's in the "My Games" tab on Steam. I am glad that today is the last day of deals, that's for sure, but as this shown, this may not be the end of them...

Fuel really isn't that good. Not a bad buy if you want something to play, but I don't know if I would want to dedicate my free time to that game. Especially with my growing backlog from this holiday sale.

Oh well, too late for me. :lol

Was my first thought to, but I think they were going more for a half-way between realism and naturalism with many of their casting choices. Given that you semi-direct the conversations yourself to define the character, a less expressive approach is perhaps more appropriate.

Here's my final haul for this year:

Sid Meier's Pirates!
Broken Sword: Twin Pack
Samorost 2
Starwars Republic Command
Evil Genius
Unreal Deal
Rome: Total War Gold
The Void
Lucasarts Jedi Knight Bundle
Jagged Alliance 2
Mass Effect
Shattered Horizon
Medieval II: Total War
Multiwinia + Darwinia
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization
Osmos
Mr. Robot
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor
Killing Floor
Battlefield 2
Super ID Software Pack
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

The VA for female Shepard is way, way better. Not sure if either of the VAs are coming back for ME2, but I hope they replace male Shepard at least.

GTAIV worth it? I've barely played any of the GTA games. heh.
If you're confident your PC can handle it. I'd say it's the best deal out of the entire sale. One of my favourite games of 2008.

My buys:

Bookworm Adventures Deluxe
Braid (gift)
Braid (gift)
Audiosurf (gift)
Outrun 2006 (gift)
1946 (gift)
Dragon Age: Origins
Ghostbusters
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Sam and Max Complete (11 games)
Torchlight
Killing Floor
Aquaria
Time Gentlemen, Please! and Ben There, Dan That!
Indie Pack
Commandos 2
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
LucasArts Adventure Pack
Doom Complete
Morrowind
Garry's Mod
Indigo Prophecy
King's Quest Collection
Lumines Pack
Outrun 2006
Puzzle Quest
RIP Trilogy
Rome: Total War Gold
Civ III
Civ IV Complete
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Trine
Zombie Bowl-O-Rama
Atari: 80 Classics in One
Grand Theft Auto IV
Left 4 Dead (gift)

Total cost: $209.93

About $23 was spent on gifts, $60 of that were assorted "here's some Steam money" Christmas gifts, and the Doom pack was purchased by my father.

A little too much, but it just means I'll have to tighten my belt a bit in the coming months.

To be honest Valve are not that great at gunplay. The guns in L4D fell kind of off to me.

It's the source engine, not the gunplay. Every game with the source engine feels like that. The game play in Valves games are great, but it's the engine that makes that experience different. Take a look at the sound engine, it's horrible. Why do you think the guns sound weak? Because every source engine game sounds muffled. Directional sound in Source is no where near what the original Half Life engine had.

Wow, remind me not to listen you when it comes to shooters in future discussions.

Valve's guns feel fucking awesome. Especially L4D's weapons.

HL2s weapons were awful (still a great game) .
as for L4D(2) : While the zombies splatter really nice, I still don't feel like my bullets are really connecting with the enemy. They might be exploding into thousand giblets but I always think like someone else shot them.

I LOVE how heads pop in Killing Floor.

That also has to do with some poorish netcode. When you shoot zombies, the bullets don't really connect until you confirm the shot with the server. That means sometimes zombies can die 200ms later, which feels really disconnected.

I highly recommend Altitude. It's one of those "let me jump into this for a few mins" kind of games although you can then end up playing for hours. Try the demo if you're on the fence.

It has Call of Duty-style perks and the variety of strategies that can be employed depending on the type of plane you fly is great. It totally replaced my "hey I'm on the comp let me boot up WoW real quick" Makes quitting a lot easier. :D

It's easy to get into and just mess around but I find that it has a lot of depth as well.

Have you really not played any of those games before? That is such a ridiculous list of fantastic games. 1000 hours of play. Oh, you got Civ IV? Well you will never be done then.

So, one thing I've never done is attached a retail game to my Steam account.

How does this work, exactly? Can you download the game from Steam after that instead of re-installing via disc? I really enjoy being able to use the Steam overlay to access the web from within a game rather than alt-tabbing.

If it has a serial code that supports Steam (such as Unreal Tournament 3), then yes, you can download that from Steam. Otherwise, no.
You should be able to use the Steam overlay, though.

You can add any non-Steam game to your personal Steam games list, if you boot from there you can use the Steam overlay. Only a few retail games support being attached to your Steam account, the ones I know are: Valve games, UT3, and MW2. For these games you just put in the serial key and it's just as if you bought it digitally - you don't need to even touch the disc.

Since we're posting lists, here's mine:

Aquaria
Defense Grid
Osmos
THe Void
The Witcher
Morrowind (I know I bitched, I'd rather have had Oblivion, but I found this , which promises to make the game look like this. And if it fails it wasn't all that expensive.
Riddick, Assault on Dark Athena (never played the original Riddick)
Jade Empire
Left 4 Dead
Lumines
Medieval II: Total War
Mirror's Edge
Rome: Total War
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Torchlight
Project Freedom

Fuck, that's a lot of games now that I list them :lol

Nice. That's pretty much all I'm interested in, being able to launch everything from the Steam menu and being able to access the overlay from my retail games.

It's $25 now for Civ 4 complete. Yeah, it's good. In my opinion, possibly the best strategy game to be had on PC.

It's about what you'd imagine it to be about. Building a civilization from the ground up using real life historical people, buildings, and tech. Think fantasy sports crossed with history.

As to it being any good...Well I didn't do anything productive for a month after I first started playing.
