“The first available Early Access version corresponds with what we would have considered our "release version" in the past. The main campaign is finished, with more than 30 puzzles and a professionally voice-acted story, and includes a Steam Workshop enabled level editor allowing you to create and share custom puzzles from day one.”

It's basically the 1.0 release, but they want to do more with it.

“During Early Access, we're planning to expand the game with numerous mini-campaigns introducing new mechanics, factory blocks, environments, and products, in addition to making that new content available in the sandbox and level editor.

We also plan to make lots of general improvements to the game based on player feedback and requests, especially in the sandbox and level editor. There's no point in even pretending that we know what kind of insane contraptions you're going to build there!”

Oh wow, I never realized that the developers put their own comments in the Early Access box. I just always kind of skimmed it over and figured it was just a general "what Early Access" generally is boilerplate.

Good to know.

Just finished the first chapter of Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches (note that it's not episodic, I haven't finished the game yet, but I've put in two hours which I think is plenty sufficient in this case...you'll see why shortly.)

The story, dialogue and voice acting: You play "Chris," the protagonist without a last name or set gender, who's been asked to housesit for Jennifer and Malcolm Sullivan, as they look after their daughter who has been suffering from mental illness (or HAS she?) Things quickly take a turn for the creepy as you're greeted by voices and visions, and your job is to...figure out what's going on as well as make sure the cat is fed and the fireplace is lit so the house has hot water, because you are still housesitting after all. I'll give them proper adulation for this. It's got an interesting setting (Wales) and it seems to have some basis in Welsh legends, not something I've ever encountered in a game before. So points for culture. The voice acting is decently good - normal people speaking with normal inflections and no overacting. Jennifer sounds like an ordinary British mother, the construction worker sounds like an ordinary British man. All is well. So why am I about to tear this game a new one?

The graphics: The game opens promisingly: with an FMV cutscene which looks like it was taken from a car driving to a house. So immediately expectations are set high: oh, maybe this is one of those point and clicks where every location is done with photos of real places? Nope. As soon as the cutscene ends and gets to the gate it dissolves into...well, there's no real other way to put this except "1994." That low-poly, badly textured, low-res effects, "hey mom and dad, look at this, I made a stone bowl on the computer!" look. Had I played this game 20 years ago I might have been impressed with the graphics and said "Doesn't look as good as Myst but it's pretty cool." But everything from the poorly-rendered inventory items to the tutorial's yellow text with drop shadow makes it feel like it was done ages ago and forgotten. You only get snapped back to reality when you have to charge the mp3 player and you realize "oh right this was ACTUALLY developed in 2008."

The gameplay: The store page states that the digital deluxe edition includes "Improved Navigation." I can only take that to mean that the original navigation system would have been similar to moving the turtle cursor in the LOGO programming language, because the existing one is BAD. They took the worst aspects of Myst's navigation and amplfied them. I got constantly lost, especially in rooms with two similar-looking doors. Entered the wrong room? Click left, click left again, click the door. There are certain areas comprised of only one screen that have a cursor that allows you to "turn around" - that would have been so useful in regular areas, but nope. Things that appear accessible in a room aren't accessible until you've got the right combination of forward and left/right clicks to be in the right screen to get them.

Oh, but it gets worse. You know how in a lot of point-and-click games your character will just pick stuff up and you have no idea what they'll need it for? And you think, that's silly, why would they do that? Then you realize what the alternative is: seeing an item, and being unable to pick it up until you encounter something that needs it, at which point you have to go backtrack and get it. The only exception to this rule seems to be the dead mice that the cat is leaving for me. This is made funnier by the fact that I found a box of rodent poison. THAT, I don't need yet. Dead mice, I do, apparently. "Interact with a comprehensive inventory of nearly 200 items," the store page reads. Playing the game, I realize that statement is now a threat.

And finally...the worst possible sin a point and click game could commit: a text interface for a password box. That is some bush-league Kongregate flash escape game bullshit right there, especially when I had the right answer but didn't get it in just the right way. What was the right way for the password, you might ask? Two words. With a space. Case Sensitive. Once I had to look up a guide to see what I was doing wrong (the lack of capital letters and the space) Chapter One ended and I decided that was the perfect place to make some impressions.

The length: two hours to beat one chapter, five chapters, so extrapolating will make it about ten hours. A decent length for a point-and-click, assuming you can tolerate the navigation that long.

The verdict: The game had a good idea, a good setting, good voice acting, and utterly no clue of how to put it together into an enjoyable game. If you need five clicks to face something you want to interact with, you need to rethink the room's layout. I don't care if Chris doesn't need the salt right now, let the player take it so it's ready when he does need it! If you can't do 3D well, hire 2D artists instead, it's okay, really! So I guess my verdict is...if you want a frustrating experience or you yearn for the days when Riven's navigation system was revolutionary, get this game. Otherwise, stay far away.

Personally I don't think Story missions should ever be held behind side missions or extra activities. Since it takes away from what they are supposed to be. If I want to go through the story with nothing extra I should be able to. One of my biggest issues with Just Cause 2. 5 story missions so to make up for that you have to screw around until you get them. To me it just seems like shitty design when your game has to rely on that. If your content is good, i'll go back to it when I beat the game. No reason to force it on me if all I want to do at the time is story missions.

Just Cause 2 is definitely an extreme case.
I suppose I didn't mind SR2's system because the first thing I did after breaking out of prison was find side-stuff to do.

i think we've reached bundle saturation.

Here this will stop you from wanting to revisit the game altogether:

The current GOG release will require you to:
-Play at ~20 frames a second max
-Play at 640x480 to hit that max framerate
-Set up a Joy2Key profile

oh wow.

That's awful.

Isn't 2 a terribly shit port, even with the fan patches?

It's shit tier for sure, yes.

I miss your avatar.

I'm playing Enslaved after ignoring it for a long time.

Gameplay is pretty simple, but this is an enjoyable action-puzzle-escort mission game.
Also, it looks pretty.

It's like a melee Uncharted with a terrible camera. I think a lot of people would like it if they gave it a shot.

Hacking in Alpha Protocol is one of the most awful systems I've seen in a long, long time.

How the save game works isn't very far, tho.

So how reasonable is it for a newbie to get the new Endless Day achievement in Endless Space? The Dungeon of the Endless one was pretty simple and I had never completed a run before.

I know some people hate it though. Cause they expect it to be an exact GTA clone.
Which would be a horrible thing considering it's 2015 and I still can't play a female protagonist in a GTA game, even when there are three of them to choose from...

Nah, I love the SR franchise for what it is, and for the ways it sets itself apart from GTA.

Someone posted images of the game being fanpatched so the textures are much better looking. Forgot the actual link though.

Depends on how well you can play the game on Endless difficulty.

Well newbie in this case means someone hasn't even gone through a single game of Endless Space (win or lose) and the last 4x game I've really played was Master of Orion II with a friend in highschool.

Well, I offer you the best of luck because from what I understand the achievement for Endless Space is the hardest to get of the three.

I've had no issues with the camera, you control it with the Right Stick.
My main gripe is how easy is to jump around, basically press a button and hit a direction.

one of my favs. double dipped for the pc version too. i really wish we could have gotten a sequel to this

Yeah, the world is interesting, and those flashbacks or whatever they are caught my attention.
I've yet to finish it.

Ok I'll look for it! thanks ;)

Random question about Windows 8.

The DVR was brought up of course for gaming related purposes, and while we have stuff like Shadowplay that already does it, the idea of the DVR being on the OS already got me thinking.

Couldn't the DVR feature, being able to be constantly recording and then being able to save the X minutes or whatever be really useful for tech support stuff outside of gaming? Person encounters a bug or a crash, they can DVR it immediately and use it for troubleshooting the fix?

I just completed Defection at Corellia (silver medal) at 1280x1024 and the game ran at a constant 60FPS. The game immediately recognised my 360 controller and I had no trouble setting the controls.

Man, people really really want to keep their exclusives to their platform of choice.

The emotional investment people put into a corporation and its software library is absolutely necessary for the continuation of the console war.

You should know better ashecitism.

Anyone knows if I can get Rogue Squadron 3D running on PC at 1080p and with a 360 controller?

Instant buy if true.

The highest resolution in the game's options is 1024 but I'd be surprised if there isn't a mod for that soon.

The 360 controller works very well. Go to the joystick settings and hit default for it to fill up the commands with buttons inputs. You can then tinker them to your heart's content.

and as a totally Bethesda move, the season pass for Evil Within costs as much as the game does during this sale. Not that i know what's in that pass but damn if that isn't Bethesda at their finest.

I don't think all the dlc is out yet for that game. well at least there haven't been any reports about dlc for that game. If thats the case tho its good that the season pass isn't on sale, its a dick move to put the season pass on sale when all the content that comes with it isn't even out. But i do see the point your making and i agree with it, just not in this scenario(that is, if all the dlc isn't out :p)
