Played 1954 Alcatraz for some hours.

Didn't like it that much. Got really quick the idea that it doesn't matter what kind of questions you ask or what kind of answers you give. The background information of Alcatraz and San Francisco is really great, and I'd love to visit places like Bimbo's 365 Club and such.

But the gameplay... meh. I like the idea of playing two characters at the same time, but you don't have to work together in order to solve the puzzles.

Meh, just meh.

Are we an mustache twirling force that threatens to destory everything out of pure malice?

Malice? No. More like ignorance and lack of common sense, some apparently don't get subtle hints.

And so I actually think the problem is that 'we' were too nice for too long and didn't just ask certain, mostly new, posters to shut the fuck up from time to time thinking it would get back to normal by itself. And when it didn't unfortunately some anger and frustration started to built up, the results of which we are seeing now.

confession time?
I never had a tablet and never felt any need of one and I like gadgets, well... useful ones, at least.

I've found that tablets are mostly useless for me. I had the first Nexus, sold it and now grabbed another cheap tablet. No idea why, it's interesting at first but in the end I prefer doing almost everything at my desktop PC or a notebook.

is it supposed to be Xcom clone?
It does look interesting, though

There is a dev blog with some stuff, but I'm still not 100% sure what to make out of it.

Edit: Here's a snippet:

X-Com?!
We have no problem admitting that we’re big fans of X-Com. Let’s be honest, they’ve done an excellent job when it comes to streamlining the battle aspects of the turn-based strategy genre. We have taken inspiration from those ideas, especially when it comes to the battles. But X-Com is only one source of inspiration. Others to quote would be Jagged Alliance 2, Chaos Engine (visually), System Shock (story-telling). Mixed into the cocktail are also some of the japanese turn-based RPGs like Tactics Ogre. Of course comparisons only go so far.
All this to say: Yes we take inspiration from many games and genres, pick out the best, adapt them and make them into our own.

Does Halfway have procedural content?
Yes and no. What we don’t have is procedurally generated levels. Instead we have hand-crafted levels. As mentioned in last week’s post, we strongly feel this is the way to go for our game. With Halfway, we don’t just want to send the player through a series of randomly occurring battles, but deliver an engaging story with it. This is quite difficult to do with completely procedural content. We hope you will agree when you actually get to play the game.
A few aspects of the game are randomised, however. Battles are different every time you play them, with enemies being placed differently. Items and weapons have randomised elements to them as well. Plus there are events that happen outside of the battles which aren’t pre-determined (more on that below).

What about Squad customisation?
In Halfway your squad members don’t have fixed classes. Instead each squad member is made up of a tactical skills tree and some positive and negative perks. Some characters will share certain skills and specialisations. When a member has gained enough experience the player will be able to choose from skills and perks to customise their team.

We won’t put any limitations on what equipment a character can or can’t use. However, some characters will be better trained or experienced to make use of certain items and weapons.

An important aspect we wanted to ensure is that your squad is not just composed of “disposable” members. Instead they are characters with a story that you pick up throughout your journey in the game. They all bring a different angle to the story, and with that also certain abilities and specialisations that will be entirely unique to them. Learn how to use each member of your squad properly and you might just find some interesting new strategies to overcome the next level!

As a side-note: You as the player will directly play as one of the squad members.

What happens besides the battles?
After one of the first few levels, you will recover a sector of the space ship which will become your temporary headquarters. After every battle, you will return to the headquarters for strategic planning. Here, you can walk around your headquarters and talk to the other members of your small group of survivors, organise your equipment and put together a squad for the next level. Another aspect we’d love to add is that the player can delegate tasks to his remaining members, whilst he is out on the next mission. For example, they could go scouting for equipment, other survivors or just defend the headquarters to make sure they won’t be overrun by aliens.

Yeah same. It would probably nice for watching movies and series in bed but I have my netbook for that and when I'm on the go I got my smartphone with me. Really no place for a tablet to be.

I like laying at my couch while watching tv and browsing internet on my tablet, or watching anime
porn
at bed.

Oh ! I forgot I also like reading comics on my tablet ^_^

I started typing a post but there's just so many tips to give! You can go with the generic party, they're fine. Put the human and minotaur in front, rogue and mage in the back. Your rogue will get a bow and arrow on level 2 or 3, so she won't stay useless for long. Always look for secrets! Things that look odd or out of place, buttons on the wall, etc. The best loot is in secret rooms, and I'm not sure beating the game without finding most of the secrets is even possible.

To deal with combat, learn the square dance! Find 4 open squares and lead the enemy around by rotating, moving to the side, rotating, moving to the side... You can attack before they can get a chance to.

Thanks! Fun, I love finding secrets. I'll be sure to frantically click all those suspicious-looking bricks!

Combat must have been my problem the last time I played; I always ended up getting myself trapped by tough enemies. I'll try it this way.

I'm building a new party now. Hopefully skill/stat points have room for error because I have no idea what I'm doing in assigning these other than the basic knowlege of "rogues probably need dexterity" and such.

Oh confession time?

I'm almost 24 and I've never owned a cell phone. I've never used a tablet either.

Just got done playing like 3-4 hours of Garden Warfare, finally being able to play with my friends now that the mics are fixed, game is sooooooo good now.

well, that is impressive. You don't want it and don't need it?

Ghost recon was a joy to co-op through Uplay as well. We had to remove each other from the client and add each other through the in game FL.

Reminds me of when I had to change my Uplay password to a smaller one that lacked special characters as Far Cry 2's own in-game log-in form had a more restrictive character limit. Can't say I'm shocked that despite unifying accounts systems Ubi didn't think to update the games themselves to ensure password support consistency.

I never played any dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock back in the day so starting it up was a bit jarring. I can't think of any specific examples since I tried it so long ago, but it felt like it wasn't made for novices to the genre!

I do like how old school it feels while at the same time, the game is gorgeous!

I just reinstalled it again to give it another go; it's only 720 MB. Maybe I'll be able to pinpoint exactly what set me off about it if I still can't get into it this time.

First time I fired up Grimrock I got my crew and we plunged into the depths! Figure I would Molly whop the game because I'm da bess....My party died,3 times in 15 minutes and I walked away a beaten dog. I will return soon to try again though.

I remember trying to figure out how to switch party members and a giant snail just wrecking me

I'm really looking forward to this friday, when I get paid and can get Crimzon Clover and maybe even Astebreed. I'm pretty excited about CC, since playing a session really made it clear that it's like a spiritual successor to Daioujou. The background art were pretty sweet too, though I'm not sure I quite understood everything about the breaking system.
.

You won't be disappointed, so much fun! I really have to play it again...
A friend gifted me Astebreed a while ago, still haven't played it for more than 30 minutes, I really need to fix that...

Well, tablets are really babby's first PCs.
It's ingenious how the tech companies are able to sell something despite the product 'vringing you 2006 PC performance for a 2014 PC price'.

I've found that tablets are mostly useless for me. I had the first Nexus, sold it and now grabbed another cheap tablet. No idea why, it's interesting at first but in the end I prefer doing almost everything at my desktop PC or a notebook.

I love my Desktop and my tablet *shrugs*

They are a great team together, like PC & Nintendo gaming :p

I never had a tablet and never felt any need of one and I like gadgets, well... useful ones, at least.

I've owned an Android tablet for two months and borrowed a different Android as well as an iPad for a few weeks. I never liked any of them. I just kept reaching for my laptop when the experience became too limited and then slowly stopped picking up the tablet at all.

Recently my laptop crapped out and I needed a new one. I wanted something light and easy to carry more than anything. I also wanted to try a tablet again because there is content that I think is best consumed with one.

I now have an Asus T100. It's a 2-in-1 that's basically a tablet that comes with a keyboard dock that it snaps into. It runs full windows, has no fans, gets 11 hours of browsing/video/work, never gets hot, weighs a little over 2 lbs/1 kg, and plays many games beautifully. So far it's both the best tablet and best laptop that I've ever had. I love this thing.

If we don't collectively start exercising some self-restraint soon, someone's going to drop the hammer on us. It's bound to happen sooner or later at the rate we're going, and I'd really prefer not to see that.

I firmly believe we should keep things friendly and informal around here. There are some long-time regulars who I know would prefer these threads to be purely informational, and would like to see all the banter and little digressions weeded out (or shipped off to Community where they won't get in the way of the srs bsns.) I've repeatedly argued against changes in that direction whenever the matter's come up. I believe that would strip the Steam threads of personality, which is what makes them special. Unfortunately, it becomes harder for people to defend that position when we have regular posters abandoning the thread due to the sheer volume of way off-topic posts lately. : /

If you think you might be part of the problem, just try to rein yourself in a little. I'm not saying people should only talk about games and sales in the threads, or that things always need to be uber-serious. Just be mindful. If you think the conversation's going too far off track, try to steer it back towards a relevant topic. Resist the temptation to flood the thread with OT image spam and reaction .gifs - it's fun sometimes, but we should try not to let things snowball into waifunamis and alpacalypses if we can help it. That's all I'm asking.

100% thumbs up.

We gotta keep this thread informal and friendly, but at the same time this is a forum not a chat!
There's a GAF group on Steam with a group chat. You can always use that to spam waifus and alpacas when unrelated to the next waifu or alpaca game.

The fact that I'm writing much less than before (even though my posts have always been on the off topic side)... I can blame it on D:OS sucking away all my spare (and more) time, but in fact it's mostly because it is now extremely hard to hook into the thread, with all the meaningful conversations vanishing so quickly in every second further previous pages.

I never had a tablet and never felt any need of one and I like gadgets, well... useful ones, at least.

I've always thought it would have been a perfect e-stuff reader, especially because I got used to read comics in bed on my laptop, and that's not really ideal... :D

Then my girlfriend bought a Nexus 10 and... I guess I never even had the interest to borrow it. Even more so when I got a Nexus 5, that's big enough to actually use it as a reader itself. :D
So I guess at the moment, I'm with all of you with no need for a tablet!

I'm almost 24 and I've never owned a cell phone. I've never used a tablet either.

That's actually pretty impressive. My parents got me one of those unbreakable nokias (3310 I believe) so we could contact each other, especially when I needed to stay late after school.

My platoon also required every single one of us to be contactable 24/7 for emergencies, so I had to have one then too.

Nowadays my smart phone is basically reserved for bakatsuki, animania, gaf surfing and stitcher

Also the steam android app during sales. Protip: Sometimes voting on the client or site is problematic, but voting with the android app never fails.

Well said. I get seriously creeped out by the anime stuff.

So do I. What's worse is that the people who post this stuff know full well the type of reaction it gets and don't care. They are just going for shock / weirdness factor. Not very "communal" behavior. Furthermore, I can no longer read this thread at work which really sucks.

Also, I think that maybe ModBot's "no lurker" rule should be rethought. It seems like a good idea on paper but when a new thread starts it is filled with what seems like 10-20 pages of basically nothing posts within an hour or so and I wonder if sometimes it is just people trying to ensure no lurker status. When the thread starts out with dozens or hundreds of nothing posts then shit posting is not much of a stretch from there. Additionally, the Destiny Beta Code thread has proven that Gaffers outside of the Steam thread basically have no clue what ModBot is and are scared to try it. Just an idea.

Oh, no, there is little room for error! The stats should tell you what they actually do if you hover (at least they do once you're in the dungeon and leveling up). You will want maybe 10 points in armor for your warriors, 10 points in willpower for the mage and 10 points dexterity for your rogue. Then dump everything into swords for one warrior, axes for the other, fire magic for the mage and missile weapons for the rogue. The best weapons for each class are in those categories.

There's more to it but I don't want to page a 10 page post...

First time I fired up Grimrock I got my crew and we plunged into the depths! Figure I would Molly whop the game because I'm da bess....My party died,3 times in 15 minutes and I walked away a beaten dog. I will return soon to try again though.

All four are active at all times! You can drag and drop their pictures in the bottom right to select their formation, but they can all attack and do stuff in real time.

I also have Coldfire Keep in my list, even though I hear that one sucks.

The Steam page for Coldfire Keep lists reviews of the mobile version without mentioning that they are mobile reviews and not PC reviews. The scores likely benefit from the game being compared to other mobile games instead of PC games.

You know Ubi put lots of love in their PC version when the first thing you see pop up is an error about 64bit incompatibility.

Only works on 64bit? I think the new Battlefield and some other games are 64 bit only.

If it only works on 32bit then that's really weird, because 32bit programs usually run fine on 64bit os.

Sometimes I honestly feel people are so animu-phobic (lol at that term). Its just anime.

Also people don't post for no lurker. No lurker checks for 5 posts in the current or the previous thread. You don't have to shit post 5 times just to enter raffles.

My issue with the anime stuff is a little bit different.

PC gaming has always been dominated by Western development, but with Steam, you have a healthy influx of Japanese developers/publishers. Resident Evil games, Sega classics,Ys series, Dark Souls, etc. Japanese games are represented on Steam, and there's plenty to like.

All the "waifu" games do is perpetuate a negative perception of what Japanese gaming is or was. Buying these games as a joke or for the cards sends a message that we want more shovelware in place of quality Japanese-produced games.

Buying a quality visual novel is fine, but grabbing some random game because it has some giant-eyed cartoon character with big tits is just ridiculous. I'd rather play Bad Rats.

I know that feel. Uplay is a pain for co-op games :/

Yeah, we at least got Conviction or whatever working before, even if we had some weird lag issues here and there.

lemme tell you it gonna die before the end of this year, there is no other way!
... wait, I said it the last year too, didn't I? and one year before that and... (._.)

If only. Though if they at least made it where playing with friends on PC wasn't a pain in the ass that'd be serviceable.

Ghost recon was a joy to co-op through Uplay as well. We had to remove each other from the client and add each other through the in game FL.

Yeesh. I don't think you can even manually add people in-game in Blacklist. It kept going "Add friends to invite them to your game!" with no pointing me to a place to add them while playing. It took me way too long to even to figure out how to add friends in Uplay than it should. I eventually figured it out through the browser. The interface just boggles my mind.

Pro tip: update it to the latest version, and disable all internet cards that are not in use.

We both had it patched up to the latest version, but didn't mess with internet cards or port forwarding. Ubi's "helpful" page is like "Make sure to check these ports!" and tha'ts about it.
