Steam Machines and Steam Controllers shipping December 13th (US only)

I'm guessing a lot of people who receive them will be people active on youtube/twitter/etc. so they can promote them.

GOOD LUCK WARIO64

We’ve had to make the difficult decision to limit our beta to the U.S. only, because of regulatory hurdles.
OH for god bloomin sake!, I know the chances are slim but this is a right kick in the nuts and should have been started a lot sooner than 2 days before shipping them out.

Not impressed Valve, not at all.

To atone for getting up the hopes of international users, Valve should give all of them a copy of Wheelman.

There's 421,843 beta candidates.

Let's be generous and say half of them are US residents. 210,921 US candidates.

.14% chance to get one!

You only had to have played a game with Big Picture right?

I wonder how many people made alt accounts.

so just go through the list of 400K and see how many people got badges

If your asking why to me stating they should have said this sooner than 2 days before shipping?, because since day 1 they've had people across the world hoping they'd get into the beta (just check how many people applied for this), then 2 days before they ship them out and on the very day they announce the 300 they state its US only.

I'd be unhappy I had no chance from day 1, but to be under the impression until announcement day and then told "US only" is a pretty shitty thing to do.

There has to be 1 gaffer who gets a box.

GAF has 122k members. Steam has 65M active users. Steam universe has 950k members, aka 950k applicants for SteamOS beta. Now let's assume 10% of GAF are PC GAF, aka 12k. If we assume all 12k applied for the SteamOS beta (which is already based on the assumption all of them are actually active on GAF) the chance for one of them to be a part of it would be ~1.2%. That's actually a pretty good chance.

EDIT: Ignoring the fact that only US members can participate on both sides of the equation of course, since I have no means to find out how many there are at all.

US only means the chances of getting in will be higher for those applicable. Otherwise, the probability was at around 0,3 %, marginally higher than getting hit by lightning in an 80 year lifetime.

As a European, I'm not surprised they had to limit it, although MS' Kinect Beta for 360 was actually worldwide.

I love that Valve encourages Youtube videos and such. Reviews, impressions etc etc etc

The way it should be in all things gaming :)

Not that hard to do.

i'm sure some people didn't read that and just signed up for the group. ;P

SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships. It will be downloadable by individual users and commercial OEMs. (But unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out.) We’ll post info soon about that. Oh, and stay tuned for the in-home streaming beta to begin soon, too!

Well i'm out of the beta but this was interesting tidbit. Going to install that OS as soon as it's available.

So... 5PM today then.

Knowing my luck, I won't get in since Volvo gave me a booster in X-com today to try to appease me in not getting in. :(

I hope I get in, want to try the controller and open the hardware up

No, there's 400,000 beta participants. I seriously doubt Valve counted anyone that joined the group and didn't complete the list.

I've been kicked in the nuts. This is not a kick in the nuts.

I've also had minor inconveniences in my life. This is not a minor inconvenience.

I won something? Holy smokes, I never win anything. Well.. there was that time when I was 6 years old and at the town fair my parents entered me in the Big Wheel. It spun and landed on me and I won a 5-pound bag of sugar. Had to carry that bag around for the rest of the day.

Oh, snap. The OP says "You MIGHT have won". Disregard.
