Steam Machines and Steam Controllers shipping December 13th (US only)

If you think about it, Valve has already screwed up the Steambox release, by only allowing the console to come out in America of a shipment of 300 shows that the company is in dire consequences with hardware manufacturing. Even Mircosoft and Sony were able to start shipping to tier 2 countries so far which shows how deep Valve has fallen in not being able to ship hardware.

Is this a real post?

Only US? Increases my odds!

It was like jumping through a bazillion hoops. Valve are great but I hate that XP, badge task nonsense they love doing.

THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility
1. Join the Steam Universe community group
2. Agree to the Steam Hardware Beta Terms and Conditions
3. Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven't already)
4. Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven't already)
5. Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

how is this a bazillion hoops?

yes its a real post

i dont know what a fake one looks like

is that a rendition btw? Like the 'shot themselves in the foot' and Amirox (was it game over or doomed?) posts?

This took me literally 5 minutes

Then we come to the OS, with it's pre-baked functionality it's gonna turn a lot of customers away and will need months of updating before it becomes usable. The biggest sign of failure is the fact that SteamOS drops native support for the majority of it's previous games in favor of a buggy OS.

Don't get me started on the controller...

I almost took this post serious, thnx for the laugh!

Damnit! I just read the thread title and freaked out for a second not realizing its for the Beta guys. Brain took a few seconds to kick in. :D

I really wanna try that controller. Get it out to retail ASAP Valve.

I genuinely can't tell if some of the people in here are serious or not.
Valve is a privately held company, they don't have any investors screaming at them.

This is a hardware beta, why are people comparing this to a traditional console launch?

I don't even.

Jokes. How do they work?

I'd be interested to know what these "regulatory hurdles" are, plenty of other companies seem to have no problem shipping internationally, even small / one person teams on Kickstarter. Is it something to do with the hardware being "free" because it's a beta?

Would love to see some talk about the controller and how well it works with games that already max out every input on a 360 controller and some action games that are dependent on face buttons.

Possibly the same hurdles which competitions state as being the reason for not allowing entrants from other countries. I recall Quebec having some silly laws regarding contests which is why most of them don't allow people from there to enter.

Disappointing either way, they should have let people know before we gave away our details.

I'm pretty certain that Valve knew fairly early on that they wouldn't be able to do the beta worldwide. but the opportunity to turn so many heads by offering to do so was a great way to garner steam machine attention.

Also limiting to the US only may damage the purpose of the beta in the first place, which was originally to gather feedback and data on usage scenarios, which will no doubt vary in different territories.

Either way, I'm hoping a GAFer gets a hold of one and share all the details!

Sometimes it's fun to make the stupid posts in jest before others make them for real. It's also a bit of a dig at the armchair market research analysts.

From the previous Steam OS/Machines/Controller threads, a lot of people have come in with the attitude of: "This isn't a traditional model so it will fail." without any real understanding of Valve's apparent concerns about the future of the PC market.

First thing I would try is DMC4. I've put off replaying it because I want to wait and use a Steam Controller. I don't believe any action game is 'dependent' on four face buttons, by the way. If I can spare my thumb a few buttons by using rear-buttons, that seems like a solid advantage for input-heavy games.

Is the controller going to even be available at retail?

Valve are the only ones manufacturing the controller ,(at first) and I believe that is for the manufactures of Steam Machines.

Jokes. How do they work?

I've been on Gaf already long enough to know there are some people who would definitely say this sort of stuff with conviction, either through misinformation or just snide arrogance (the previous steam machine threads were just a disastrous mess of ignorance from all sides).

Also this is the interwebz, sarcasm can very frequently be mistaken as borderline stupidity :)
And I have to admit the joke posts were very subtle this time round. so BAH TO YOU!

Already have a gaming PC, so nothing exciting there. But getting my hands on a new, drastically different controller will be interesting.

SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships. It will be downloadable by individual users and commercial OEMs.

That makes the rejection not so bad. I get to build it myself. Maybe setup a Starbound server.

Will streaming be available at that time also?

I only really want the controller as well, but a free titan and a nice ass case would definitely make the win a lot better.

It would have been nice if they sent out just controllers also.

Ok good to know! My sarcasm detector is all out of whack today (which I sort of mentioned why above in another reply).

Every piece of news about the steam machines has been about the prototypes?

They would magically go from working on/shipping the prototypes to mass release....how?

That's why I was excited :[ Haven't been paying attention to the prototype stuff that much since I only care about the final release.

Isnt there like crazy weird laws about bringing PCs overseas?

Like if u bring one to just visit its fine, but I remember looking at what I would need to do to bring my desktop to Thailand if I ever moved over there (gf is thai).

In the end it came up that I would have to break the machine down and Id be taxed for every single part. But there seemed to be even more weird rules.. I dont know it just seemed way to complicated and pricey I figured Id just have to sell it and buy a new one over there.

Is there any info on streaming requirements? I'm assuming if they can supposedly put up a ~$100 streaming box, then a decent laptop should be able to handle it? I guess it would be more dependent on one's internet connection?

Really excited for this. The new consoles aren't tickling me, and I don't have time to get back into big time PC gaming. Steam Machines may be right up my alley.

They started to go into detail about streaming weeks ago, there's no real system reqs as of now, but shouldn't require much. Laptops can definitely handle it.

A graphically intensive game could be streamed from a beefy gaming rig in the office to your low powered laptop that you are using in bed.

As soon as people start to receive these machines, I want someone to stream Dark Souls using that controller. I'm so curious about it.
