Well there's method in the madness there. Could possibly give the Win Store a positive boost in use and new content (though if someone isn't willing to pay for an OS when they're the cheapest they have been for ages I doubt they'll be that inclined to splurge on so so software). Could be possibly they have royally fucked up with how an awful lot of OEM, SI and VL customers are going to upgrade to Win 10 with a big stackload of shared keys out there. Maybe even to force through adoption even quicker to keep maintenace workflow focus on a narrower set of OSes (although they do have predeffiend support periods mapped out for donkeys years in advance).

Fingers crossed this whole initiative banishes 32bit OSes from desktops to just the smaller tablets. Not that application makers are that inclined to make the shift themselves.

why would they do that? now I'm suspicious, it must mean that running Win10 cost money and more than just buying OS.

Eat the cost so they can get more people into their store, that's probably where they want to shift their money making to in the long run anyway. More people in the store, more licensing, more attractive to developers, more apps.

Everyone says that you should try with FlyVPN, but I will tell you something else. FlyVPN doesn't do much better. It is same problem when using it.
Everyone's guides tell us to disable the VPN before completing the purchase. But it doesn't work, the cart gets emptied when pressing the purchase button. But it doesn't get empties when the VPN is still active.
So I have never understood how other can buy locked games when they disable VPN, because it doesn't work.

The solution is to keep the VPN on, which all of you don't recommend, and complete the purchase. After the purchase, just change the password if you feel paranoid.

Actually some time ago it worked, I don't know if they changed something now.

HOLY SHIT

but the bigger question is... Will I be allowed to uninstall IE and Cortana?

You just need to tell Cortana that you think its not working out for you both, that its your fault and not hers but that you can still be friends. Maybe shell start crying, maybe even delete your porn folder but it should do the trick.

But honestly: IE most likely yes, Cortana ... not so much because I guess that "she" will also be an addition to the "Ease of Access" features and probably to tightly coupled to completely get rid off.

God fucking dammit MS I won't be more inclined to buy your stupid OS if there's a blue girl nagging me about this and that. The people who like that kind of shit buy Apple anyway.

Also its going to be this guy's level of irritating, at the very least.

If SE was to make OSes we would have Lightning barking on us in one syllable words, just telling.
after windows 8, i dont think i want windows 10, even for free
I'm sorta in your camp, but if everybody will move to 10, and it being supposedly free, everybody will. What choice will we have?

Well even if you cant remove a feature (which i obviously don't know for sure) it doesn't mean that you won't be able to disable it. I doubt Cortana will be Clippy 2.0 (in terms of annoyance).

I want to delete it. I want to remove its drivers. I want to remove every single trace of it. Then I will fill my HDD with moe lolis to flash all the residual data from it.

yes I am that fucking mad

Mad indeed. The bad kind. The mad cow kind. And if you are using a recent version of Windows and have 'uninstalled' IE or any other feature I have bad news for you. Because they don't get actually removed, just more or less hidden. That's why uninstalling anything in W8 doesn't give you space back.

Yeah I'll be waiting on the free upgrade as well. No way I'll be jumping in day 1.

I will. Every new Windows is day 1 or earlier though this time I'm skipping the previews. Only time I went back was during the first months of Vista.

You should just hang out on Linux then you'll be free from MS grasp.

When I was doing an exchange in 'murica there were some linux computers in the computer lab that no one wanted to use. So one day I had to do some work in school and all the windows computers were occupied, so I turned to one of the linux computers.

One second I was trying to log in, the next my penis was stuck on the ceiling. Instructions completely unclear. Would not try again.

you should share your legendary patience with me, in return I can take your spacechem and will give it to a certain clueless kid and take his annoyance about that bravely.
sorry (><)

On more serious note, I stuck with win8 too even if it was buggiest piece of shit I ever have seen, but not because I wanted, I was just too lazy to roll back, and I paid for it a lot.

I would do that, laziness stops me, too much hassle, too inconvenient and there are games and software to consider.

I upgraded to win 8.1 finally after close to a year, but then the search function got seriously nerfed. Fuck that bullshit

Windows haters are the The Order fans of the OS world. If you know what I mean.
it's actually other way around, if you know what I mean ;)
not that there are many choices, given situation.

i actively avoid upgrading to 8.1, if only windows can stop annoying me with a prompt reminding me to upgrade every now and then

you actually should... because it's not as buggy as 8, not even close even if it is slightly slower, but I was told many times that upgrading does that instead of clean install. Not gonna check this theory ever, too much work

Windows 8/8.1 as a productivity OS? Hmmmm not for me, plus still missing a few features from 7 I can't give up. As a gaming and media consumption OS? No-brainer! Better multi display and aspect ratio support, found it to be between 5-10% more efficient in newer high budget titles, sometimes even more, boot up times are a massive leap on the same hardware as under 7 and lots of other little nips, tucks and refinements that can benefit.

Windows 8/8.1 as a productivity OS? totally :) I've been using it since day one ;) and now I've been using win10 since like ... January, was it?

I'm a clean install guy, and I wouldn't upgrade until my Win7 installation decides to off itself. I was actually running XP up until a new tower build two years ago.

I should stay out of gaming OT's, at least for titles I haven't played/finished. Half the people don't use spoiler tags when they should.

Have we talked about this? http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1012588

EU residents are now able to obtain refunds on their digital Steam purchases.

i actively avoid upgrading to 8.1. now if only windows can stop annoying me with a prompt reminding me to upgrade every now and then.

You realize that you're not getting any security updates anymore that way? There's no nicer way to put it, staying with 8.0 is utterly stupid. Like in real life I would slap you (don't ask what I do to XP users....).

as far as i can recall there are some compatibility issues with some games, and probably other things bugging me about 8.1 that i can't remember right now.

Mouse acceleration was broken with 8.1 Update 1 but that's fixed. I am not aware of any other remaining serious problems that were a result of these updates.

it's actually other way around, if you know what I mean ;)

I always feel upgrade installs are sluggish on the OS. No way am I doing that for Win10. Not much choice but to buy a copy instead.

I can't live without my Shadow Copy lash, not when I'm working on multiple PC's and going through hard drives at a silly rate File History got some neat tweaks over the lifetime but it's still very limited. There's a few in house applications that aren't quite stable on 8/8.1 either (though everything I pretty much use day to day is rock solid even on 10 preview).

Saying that Virtual Desktops is something I've been after for years that isn't a hack for NT.

Do a 7 to 8 upgrade and watch you're drive space disappear. To the average joe it doesn't even appear to exist on the drive at all and that you've lost 20. 30 even 40gb of drive space. I wish their installer was more smarter of clearing out legacy update files and the such you won't need any more.

I hope they'll be supplying disc images for upgrade to 10. Saying that the new fast and slow branches update in the preview has been awesome so far much better than having to reinstall when a new build comes out.

I'll take this challenge
my checklist for a good OS, in perfect world

win8
Has to be as small and unobtrusive as it is possible - fails
Has to have module structure and initial install has to be as barebones as it is possible, enough for running software and system itself, all flashy stuff and unnecessary clatter has to be downloadable content - fails
Has to be fast - somewhat checks
Has to be compatible with most of software and games - somewhat checks
Has to have 0 commercialization of any kind - fails big time.
it shouldn't assume that user is a very little advanced monkey - fails

4-

my checklist disagrees with you ;)

forgot most important thing (><)

has to be bug free - epic fail

true, true ... but then again - I've never used shadow copy ;) so I haven't even noticed it being gone in win8 :p

How is the performance of Win 10?

even better than win8/8.1 :) I mean - it's not like it's a HUUUUGE difference ... but it is slightly better, so there's that :)

They are useless anyway. First thing I do on any Win pc is disable updates.
