i don't get the point of the whole steam machine thing if they're gonna cost as much as a normal computer
what's the benefit of buying this
yeah ... that looks extremely comfortable to use

Steam machines will bomb hard, those prices are nothing special.
They should just do 1 steam machine with med specs, and price it at 399$/
The controllers will be wireless and everything else will get consolidated down to a single wire. How encumbered do you feel when you use a wired 360 controller on your PC right now?
i'm not sure "joe the plumber" will be happy with linuxJoe the Plumber doesn't want to go to Newegg and buy parts and then install an OS and then put a giant tower next to their TV.
i'm confused what audience is this that is interested in buying an expensive vr set, is fine with using linux but doesn't want to waste time building their own computerWhy would it be cheaper than a normal computer when it's just a normal computer? A Steambox is simply a box that can fit in the living area for people who don't want to build their own computer. It's going to be really attractive for people who just want to jump into VR w/o worrying about the little things.

What the fuck is this? - A Visual Novel/Kinetic Novel project being undertaken by yours truly.
What, seriously? - Yes. I am writing out fanfiction for our community and making it a game thing.
What do I need to do? - Click on this link to be taken to the form you'll need to fill out. Some of the questions are optional, so don't sweat it if you only want to put in the first two bits of info! I will be accepting submissions until next Thursday, which gives everyone a week to get their name in the hat.
favorite gaf joke? THIS IS THE TERRORISTS LAW
well ... there goes our last hope of the new RollerCoaster Tycoon being any good ...
it's from the "trailer"

I don't have the controller blocking my face
don't they have prebuilt pcs already in america or what? Not having to build one? Steam Machine-K from CyberPowerPC is actually reasonable priced considering the components, and it's on a small box that you can just plug and play. I actually feel tempted to buy it.(but I doubt that the cooling is any good so I won't)
well the example was that our friend joe the plumber was lazy and stupid enough not to want to install an os in the first placeGood thing he can install windows if he wants then

How is Steam Link going to really differ from their in-home streaming option? I can already hook my laptop up to my TV and play through that (although I haven't really tried it very heavily).
The only way I'd really buy a Steam Link is if it didn't have to render it on the desktop screen at the same time. When I was testing streaming the first time, my wife freaked out when a game popped up while she was trying to do some classwork. If it can't run in the background, then it's pretty worthless (at least to me).
Which defeats the purpose of a steam box. These things are supposed to be easy to use, similar to a console. Installing Windows requires you to backup data, format the drive, buy Windows for $100. Install it plus all the new drivers and stuff. A lot of people will just say Fuck it and buy an ps4 or xbox for $400.Not having to build one? It's because of the new EU VAT directive for digital goods though.$4.99 vs. 5.66€
Funny how euro prices keep going up almost as if companies are now following the euro to USD conversion rate, which went mostly ignored for years when USD was weak and euro was strong. In the case of Bundle Stars bundles we're talking about few dollars at most but it's still annoying.
Are any of the steam machines worth buying price-wise based on the cost of the hardware?
just buy a console! Some people don't want a huge ass tower under their TV, they prefer a small setbox.
A couple of them are. Hell, one of them is cheaper than building the a PC Tower equivalent on Europe. (though the cooling may not be up to snuff, that remains to be seen)
are the steam machines upgradable?
yeah that's what i'm afraid of considering they're small casesMost of them are. But there are few of them that use mobile GPUs placed directly on motherboard so you can't change GPU.

just buy a console!
most of the controller support games are on console anyways
i finally figured out what my favorite steamgaf moment was.
Shadownet's Great Detective Challenge

to me the way i see it is this:And lose the wonderful Steam sales? Makes no sense. And the steam controller is designed from the ground up to play mouse games.
joe the stupid and lazy plumber can't buy a prebuilt pc at any random store but knows what steam is?Nope! Just an extension of the laziness thing. I could go on? The same consumer that just wants a box also probably doesn't want to seat a CPU, deal with a screwdriver, connect a bunch of SATA cables, and ensure compatibility between all the components.
What's your keyboard and mouse?I'm not using a wired controller (or a wired keyboard ... or a wired mouse, for that matter)
you have a console but you don't have a gaming computer: you might want to buy this, but you're not looking for a living room solution so you could just as well buy a regular computer that comes with windows and can play all the games you want

Who was the person who begged for modbot games? We got a thread title out of that.
Just wanted to say this is awesome. Hope it turns out well.

I already filled in my submission, but I wanted to add/change something! - PM me the change you want made so that I can make the edit myself, since the submission form doesn't seem to want to let me enable self-edits.
Please feel free to quote for visibility. I will be posting this every now and then to assure SteamGAFers from all regions have the chance to join.
ADDENDUM:
There's been talk about submitting the game to Steam Greenlight even for the laughs of it. While I think this would be a hilarious meta-step for SteamGAF, I am a bit concerned about the legal ramifications of the sheer blatant copyright infringement I'd be committing by using everyone's avatars and background images stolen from Google Image Search. I don't know if I want to run the risk of getting my Steam account community banned for breaching any of the submission rules, which I suppose I could bypass entirely by making a new Steam account to submit the game with. Even though the game would be free to download via Steam, I'm sure that won't stop the copyright hounds from wanting to have a word with us about it.
So here's my thought on this: We could still do Greenlight, and a few have offered to cover parts of the $100 submission fee to see it done. In order for me to feel safe about going through with it, I would want to have our own art in place. Should any SteamGAFer wish to step up to the plate, we'd be looking at quite a lot of small character portraits at 100x120 and a bunch of backgrounds at 800x600. We could even have a collaborative effort between multiple artists to split the work up. You would all be credited as appropriate, and I think it would go a long way to making this game look and feel even better. Feel free to get in contact with me via PM if you're interested!
to me the way i see it is this:
case 1 - you have a gaming computer but you don't have a console: you could buy this, or buy the cheaper consoles that have exclusive games
case 2 - you have a console but you don't have a gaming computer: you might want to buy this, but you're not looking for a living room solution so you could just as well buy a regular computer that comes with windows and can play all the games you want

? you could have a mac or a laptop or whateverIf you don't have a gaming computer, then you don't have a computer, so you're probably facing a much larger problem.
well you established joe didn't have what it takes to install windows so i just took it from thereI don't see why you're bullying Joe. They probably know what a PC is. They probably know what gaming is. There's probably an overlap somewhere there.
uhh, your living room solution is your console dudecase 3 - you have a console but you don't have a gaming computer: you might want to buy this if you're looking for a living room solution.

yeah, this is actually a good use of these thingsWell in my case I want it for when I'm away from home. I can't play a good portion of my steam library on the laptop so a tiny box to bring with me to plug into a TV would be great.
get a console then?Who says Joe wants a tower? Maybe he wants a small box to put next to his TV.
