Got my Alienware Alpha R1 system from a fellow GAFer yesterday. Quite pleased with it so far! I mean, I haven't tried anything particularly demanding yet, but so far so good. Some games have been crashing, but they also crashed on my other PC too, so it's not the Alienware.

I've had this large (just shy of 600) Steam library for a while, but nothing to play it on (laptop ran most games like shite). So it's like buying this new console and already having a massive library to play with. Pretty exciting stuff!

In the past day or so I've played:
Deadly Premonition (one of my all-time favorites)
Just Cause 2
Hotline Miami
and the only new game I've tried out: Subnautica (really impressed with this one so far, about 3 hours in)

....I also just realized a terrible, horrible, horrendous thing. Somehow I don't have Half-Life 2 on Steam, nor Episode 1 or 2. I played through it on the Orange Box (360 version), and haven't played it since. I'm not sure if I can even qualify as a PC gamer at this point.

Finally downloaded Nier, and performance is not as bad as i expected (at least during intro sequence). Game is weirdly rendering in fullscreen on 1080p screen, when I'm playing it looks like 900p but screenshots are 1080p. Windowed seems to fix this but i can't see borderless windowed option,

Gameplay is fun, i didn't watched any gameplay videos or trailers so i wasn't prepared for scrollshooter and other stuff. But i still don't get how to dodge properly, i tried to doubletap movement buttons, WASD+R and double jumps, but still sometimes getting hits. Also, how to shoot and do sword attacks in different directions on keyboard and mouse?

The game upscales from 900p when running in exclusive fullscreen. Do this:

Also, the game's AA setting refers to MSAA, so if performance is low, you may want to disable it and do this instead:

Yeah, running the game on the highest graphics preset, with MSAA enabled on modest hardware and expecting the game to hold a buttery smooth 60 FPS is going to disappoint you. Calling the work put into this port on par with Koei Tecmo's efforts is plain fucking dumb.

What a dumb assertion. I already said before I got the physical copy preordered on various occasions.

The scaling problem is a 3 second fix.

The FPS problems are mostly people who are leaving 8x MSAA on and then wondering why they can't hit a solid 60.

It's far from a perfect port, but it is a very good one with a couple of little bugs and a high graphics preset which is clearly confusing people. It is nowhere even close to KT's releases.

You wrote that Platinum's porting job is on par with the effort Koei Tecmo put into their ports, but the only distinguishing factor, as you expressed it, is that we are being way more forgiving of Platinum's port job. See for yourself.

Nier seems to be a bit like a KT port, only it's Nier so people aren't going hard on it and refunding it.

Yeah the gameplay is good, though getting the hang of the Custom Combo system takes a while to get used to.
My one gripe though are the character designs, most of the male cast are passable but the female characters...hooo boy...
Bravo's the best designed character though, his muscular Italian Chinese Chef theme is neat.
