Picked up Commandos 2 on GOG only to find a thread on RPGCodex talking about how it's more a strict, linear puzzle game than one allowing for tactical freedom. Idk who to believe. Might give it a whirl all the same.
There is plenty of tactical freedom in Commandos 2.
I'd almost encourage you to cheat past the first big mission though. As it's not super fun and quite challenging. It's only when your full roaster becomes available that the game really shines imho.

thats some glorious irony
... as its just a rerelease with slight changes and preorder VO mode of 6 years old game thats legally unplayable because of DRM issues
Can anyone recommend some JRPGs worth playing on PC? Preferably Steam but any PC stuff would do. I unfortunately bounced of Nier but its put me in the mood for a JRPG, a genre I haven't played for years. I don't want to say I'm looking for something clichéd, but something 'typical' that checks all the genre tropes would be ideal. I haven't really played since stuff like Digital Devil Saga, Star Ocean 3, or the early 360 games etc.

I've put about 10 hours into Automata so far and I'm enjoying it. It's less action and more JRPG than I expected, but I don't play a whole lot of those so it's a change of pace. I will say that the disparity between character model quality and environment quality is almost on the level of DOAX3. You have 2B who has some immaculate leather and cloth shading, no expense spared on details like skindentations and the like, and then the locales are...
Tried to go back and properly finish Far Cry 2 (probably the 4th or 5th time), but I'm not sure it's possible. My play session was around 80 minutes and I managed to complete just one story mission. It's almost impossible to head straight toward your objective since enemies hurt like hell and they're always at checkpoints or wandering the plains.
My total time is 21 hours and I'm at 21/32 main story missions. Don't know if it's worth it at this point.
It's been a while since I played a mainline run through FC2 in 16 hours, but here's some things that I stuck with.
-Doing the B version of missions, the buddy option, upgrades your save huts. Do them until you get a car with a machine gun on the roof. Don't do the B missions after for speed.
-When you know a checkpoint is coming check the map to see what direction you want to go and then drive straight through the checkpoints without stopping, no fighting. They will follow you a lot but not always. Drive some ways away and get on the mounted gun and mow them down from a distance.
-Shut off your headlights at night. It took me a while to know this was possible.
-Don't do any malaria runs until your last pill is gone. When you have none left your next mission is for pills. It didn't really cause me much bother.
-Don't hunt for diamonds. Pick your weapons ahead of time and mission rewards will give you enough payment for the main guns you need and then some extra.
-Bases that aren't part of missions will be later, so don't bother clearing them until the game directs you to.
That's all I can think of ATM. The way they present the story at the conclusion is pretty unique and worth finishing. I really liked this game.
The thing with Far Cry 2 is that it's not the game you play to complete necessarily, it's not something for the story. You start off, get the nebulous task of finding the Jackal, get malaria, and pit two warring factions against one another through mercenary jobs, but it is all entirely framing for the sandbox. If you play Far Cry 2 trying to beeline to objectives, you're gonna have a bad time. It's the kind of game where you have to embrace the encounters, even if they're a bit overly numerous.

... yeah. Although I have been just utterly spoiled by environment beauty with the last few games I've played being Division and Mankind Divided.
From what is gathered the game is not big budget so its not surprising the detail went mostly in the characters really. Still I dont mind the environments and actually find a few areas quite stunning. Hope this game selling well gives Yoko Taro more budget for a future game and may he team up with Platinum Games again.
Call of Duty possibly going back to World War 2.... I need my Canadian campaign. Screw it, I'll purchase uber expensive DLC for it. CoD3 was so fun just to play for that.
It'll probably just be Normandy and Stalingrad again, but oh well, I'll play it.
Wolves of midgard is actually pretty good. Quite enjoy the weather mechanics of heat cold etc which u can get resistances too with level up etc. Also like how u dont get shitty screen of loot every mob where u pick up nothing. Games like Diablo grim dawn etc are great but getting a screen of white items at max level means nothing

I think the game has a very good sense of design with arguably makes up for the assets not being too high quality. I'd be happy if he gets to make another game with them, yes, even if the budget doesn't necessarily go up by a lot.

Yoko Taro already told people not to expect a Blood and Wine DLC from them since the stuff they have left isnt much. I'd be surprised if they make story DLC. I do see a possible Colosseum DLC at best and maybe a really small story DLC.
Beat Nier: Automata (Took me 20 hours, not 25. That was from accidentally idling).
Overall not bad, though I expected more from it. These impressions are from someone who didn't do too much side content, so you'll need to factor that into some things. I'll just list each factor by itself and conclude it at the end.
Graphics : Not bad, they do the job. The main character modes look good. But the overall world can look kinda meh close up. Though it kind of balances out since the art direction and color can be pretty to look at, despite the shortcomings.
Gameplay: A nice action game is here, though at least on Normal it's rather simple compared to most platinum fare. Which is fine, since this is a RPG more than it is a action game in the grand scheme of things. But definitey don't come into this for the platinum pedigree above anything else, or you'll be dissapointed.
Also this is spoilers
the shoot em up stuff starts to drag by the end of the game. Though it's thankfully competent
Lastly, wasn't a fan of the small open world. Which was part of why I didn't do a lot of the side quests. Even though you can fast travel, I felt the world traversal (even with speed chips) wasn't very fun. With a lot of the ones I ran into being fetch quests.
Story: Not bad, but this was a big part of where I expected more. There's a lot here sprinkled for fans of the earlier games. But on the surface, I felt the game should have offered more. Much like a lot of other games lately, there's a lot in side quests and other materials which takes away from the main quest. Yes it's there, and that's good if you're in for the whole tomato. But if not, you should come in with tempered expectations. However I will say story wise there were two things I absolutely loved here. Boss Battles and their monologues and the ending. Won't say more, but that was really cool.
Overall: Not bad, but not quite the title I was expecting. I would say It's still worth a play, especially when it's cheaper however. I'd give it a B-/C+ if I had to give it an arbitrary actor. Thank you "anonymous" benefactor for the game.

Talking of Nier, this was the main thing I thought of while playing.
I'd like to see Taro do a more linear and focused game. Think along the line and of Metal Gear, where the story is first and foremost. I think that'd be nice to have.

The game reminds me of Dragon's Dogma in some respects. Both games have really great combat systems but their environments... not amazing, to put it kindly. The buildings in Nier Automata remind me of the pointless empty rooms and paths in Gran Soren.
But you're right, they went all out on 2B. Her animations in particular are amazing. It must have taken a ton of work to do that.

I'm actually enjoying the side quests quite a bit. The game has annoying fetch/escort quests but some of the others are quite well written. It helps give some context to the game world. I'm still on my first playthrough though so I might be misreading some of the cues I'm picking up from them.
Right on man. Juno Beach is such a fascinating battle that I'd love to see. I'm expecting the usual ones like Normandy in the game though, so I'll hope for DLC.
CoD3 had a Canadian campaign, it was excellent. It had a really emotional ending too.

Grandia 2 is pretty good by the numbers JRPG but with engaging combat, however it's also a dreamcast game. Not sure if that's what you're looking for.
Other than that I adore the Trails in the Sky games. Again not sure they're for everyone.
Half-Minute Hero are definitely not a typical JRPG but it's up there for me for JRPG on steam.
I stopped playing TF2 for Overwatch. I stopped playing CS:GO for Rainbow 6 Siege. I don't even play MOBAs in the first place. I feel pretty good about distancing myself from Valve's dairy farms.

Yes and nope.
New DLC is next Tuesday I think this one already pre-loaded some of the assets so that's why there's some lore leaks. Ashes of Ariandel was pretty terrible DLC, worst of FromSoft, still worth playing.

Ringed City that comes next Tuesday is the last one, so you're not gonna have to wait long. Only 2 DLCs announced for it and I doubt they're gonna do more after they've released the GOTY Editions.
Can't blame you for that opinion, the bar was raised so high for DS3 I can understand if it came off as disappointment for some people.

also i don't think the bar being raised to hard was my problem with dks3, more like the game was just too safe, they didn't try anything new, while not committing to go back to the connected world thing of dks1, and also being like really poor in story and characters while doing like really lazy fanservice imo
i liked the combat and bosses and level design, but i found dks3 to be really predictable and that's really sad for a souls game

Yeah, for some reason it's only 2 DLCs, and even the first one was really short, assuming they spent lot of time adding that PVP game mode which I don't really have interest in myself.
I agree with those, at times it just felt like running through worse version of DS1 world that's almost completely linear.

I have some questions regarding Humble Monthly: is there some kind of requirement to be included in Humble's line-up? I think Tizoc talked about a metascore requirement. The fact is, I want to take Nightcry (probably playing it today, so it won't add to my backlog), which have mixed reviews on Steam and in general bad/average reviews on Destructoid etc, plus the game itself is not present on Humble Store, so do you think it's possible to see it included in upcoming Monthly bundles, or it's out of question?

I agree with LurkerPrime. The Last Remnant is probably the most similar JRPG to Xbox360 era you can find on Steam I can think of.
If you plan to play it, try not to overlevel too much. Monsters scale with your level.
