What's wrong with email authentication is that people get their email accounts compromised. Probably because they used the same password for their Steam account which they also got compromised. Valve (and physical authenticators in general) go with the assumption that people who get their online credentials stolen are at least safe because there is one last security step of the physical authenticator.

On a more general note, I guess I just don't understand the "Fuck Valve" mentality when Valve imposes rules on Valve's marketplace that lets users sell Valve's digital nothings for real money. It's one thing to say that one would prefer a better implementation or better service or even a third party authenticator app, but just generally complaining about them adding security features seems rather silly.

Considering I have a lot more faith in my ability to keep my email from getting compromised than I do in Valve's ability to maintain their android app that they've barely paid any attention to, I'm pretty hesitant to tie the security of my account to it. If they'd sell me a physical authenticator like Blizzard did, I'd be fine with that. My battle.net authenticator is fine and functional 7+ years later. I've had more than one phone end up bricked with no warning in that same time frame.

Honestly though, I think a lot of us are more annoyed because we know the only reason Valve implemented these changes was so they could do away with their trade reverting policies and to otherwise guard their bottom line from credit card fraud, rather than any sort of grand pro-consumer behavior. And in doing so, they made causal users of the market and items like myself largely quit using it entirely, which is unfortunate. They also clearly abandoned their plans for improving cards and giving the entire feature more functionality and interesting features.

I forgot to cancel my humble monthly after I bought the mad max one, they renewed it today. Oh well, wasn't gonna bite since I have Rocket League on ps4 already, hopefully the june games are decent, I already owned all of the other games besides mad max last month.

People are paying $5-$6 for the Rocket League keys in B/S/T and even if you only get a dollar each for all the other games I'm sure you can cover your cost. A bit of a hassle but at least you won't be out $12.

Pffff porn is great publicity.
Bad move Blizz.

I'm sure that Blizz is well aware of the Streisand effect and what "banning" Overwatch porn will actually accomplish. Not like there wasn't plenty of WoW porn over the years.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I'll wait and see what the june games are and sell what I don't need :)

Any reason to keep Rocket League on PC? Does it run/look (at 1080p) better than the PS4 version? I haven't played in a few months but I remember the ps4 version being pretty on point.

Yes, it looks and runs better on PC. Controls feel snappier as well.

They "have to" because they don't want to deal with it because they don't give a shit about customer service.

And the net result, regardless of how annoying or superfluous you find it, is that account security is increased.

Considering I have a lot more faith in my ability to keep my email from getting compromised than I do in Valve's ability to maintain their android app that they've barely paid any attention to, I'm pretty hesitant to tie the security of my account to it. See now this is something I can understand. I was fairly apprehensive about enabling the authenticator myself precisely because of Valve's software development process that could leave the mobile app hanging for years if no one was interested in it. And in fact this has happened already. This is one of those times where one just has to pick between using the authenticator or giving up on the market. It still doesn't seem like they're doing anything wrong with all this.

Honestly though, I think a lot of us are more annoyed because we know the only reason Valve implemented these changes was so they could do away with their trade reverting policies and to otherwise guard their bottom line from credit card fraud, rather than any sort of grand pro-consumer behavior. Dealing with credit card fraud is no joke though. I had a client once who worked directly with Visa I think and he told me that these companies have very little tolerance for bad vendors. To some extent that also depends on the country the vendor is in, so they might be harsher on countries which are known for credit card fraud, but in general they don't like having to deal with fraud and can pull their services if it gets to be too much. For Valve, or any online vendor, that is a nightmare scenario. This authenticator business might have lost them a certain amount of money but that would be peanuts compared to the damage that would happen if Visa or Mastercard pulled their support for the entire Steam store. That's where they make most of their money, and not from taking 10% of 10 cent cards.

First time an ingame item has it's own store page? This is weird.

Wait never mind it counts as DLC apparently.

There is a reason they would enter into that danger to begin with, and it is indeed that cut they take off. Gamers didn't ask for it, it was all Valve's idea to get money from nowhere and they only had to start caring once they got into legal troubles for being so apathetic about what happens to anyone. They just want to have their cake and eat it too for absolute minimal effort. Account security with them is indeed a concern with credit companies and personal hassle, not a concern for customers. That is why they don't have a physical option as Lomax mentioned about Blizzard. You know what they did? They gave me a free one with a game preorder. Pretty simple solution, and they haven't even basically commissioned gamers to operate a high-scam-risk official grey market for them.

Damn it, fucked up the elusive target in Hitman.

Probably should have played the map a bit before jumping in, instead of going in blind.

They take a large cut off the top of those sales so it's not like they are selfless saints in providing the option. It's a genius scheme to generate more income from nowhere. My issue isn't dropping card sales, and I don't mind security, I just mind the heavy handed pushing to use one incredibly presumptive form of security upon me that uses a whole separate device from the one I use Steam on. I don't care if other people get compromised. I don't. I have never had anything "hacked" from me. I haven't had any sort of virus on any of my computers for 20 years. It is actually less secure to turn my phone, which I carry out everywhere in public instead of being locked at home, into some kind of security nexus for all my services like they all want.

i mean, would you promise that if you ever get hacked, you get what you deserve and they should do nothing to help recover your account? and then double promise that you will keep your last promise when you get hacked and not ask for a one time emergency special consideration? because the problem is that the users who most insist they don't need protection have a remarkable way of growing up a bit the second they get hacked and then expecting to be helped. like, they have the numbers in front of them, they can see how many accounts get hacked. they can see how much money they save being able to automate account security through 2fa, how many fewer hours they need to devote to helping people recover their accounts.

They're probably balanced for people who know the levels. Otherwise, they'd be too easy.
