Strange. I never ran into that issue.

Maybe I got lucky with my initial class pick (Shaman).

Though I only played through the campaign once.
It could be players just whining. I was curious on opinions about that. Torchlight 2 was unfavorable with that design and I dont want to deal with that again.

To be clear, what I was getting at is that there are still "classic" Quake 3 servers but they're largely populated by people who have been playing Quake 3 since it was known as Quake 3. Bethesda has made many changes to Quake Live in the interest of luring new players, but the game began as something of a carbon copy of OSP/CPM-infused Quake 3, which discouraged newcomers as they were jumping into a game that was mechanically identical to the very same title many others had been playing for years.

To answer your question directly: Yeah, Quake Live is what you want... but it's on borrowed time at this point as a game doesn't go from free-to-play -> optional subscriptions -> pay-to-play on Steam because it's doing well. Especially with Quake Champions on the horizon.

Aaah I had totally forgot about Quake Champions. Maybe I should get Quake 3 just for the nostalgia only. Thanks for the help!

Well, like you say - they happened before the game was made. If we're trying to use Steamspy stats to determine how "healthy" a franchise or developer is, then using Kickstarter backers is a bit besides-the-point - they're not really "sales" as they are an "investment" in the developer to make the game, with a Steam key at the end of it.
I see where you're going with this, but I disagree on some of it. I don't view KS backers as "investments". It's a form of patronage, so they're certainly closer sales than any other form of funding.

But I suppose it depends what you're using the stats for. I just assumed up there that we're using Steams[py stats to determine health of a franchise or dev. If that's true then what we're really looking for is a rough-guide to the developer's income from a game. Kickstarter backers could get a Steam key for anything from $25 upwards, compared to the $45 it's currently selling for on Steam. Which means that counting each of the current owners of the game as a sale skews the figures for Larian's income model.
I don't think you can really make a valid case for this. Each game is going to be different depending on how it was funded.

For instance, say we have Game X that wasn't KS, but had an external publisher funding it the entire way. Once that game is released, there's a good chance that a lot of the sales money will continue to feed into the publisher while the developer moves on to their next project. Game Y is funded via KS and they manage to self-fund the game. At this point, any sales that come after that are essentially pure profit.

I'm not trying to say that one model is necessarily superior to another. In the end, Game X and Game Y might break out evenly, but there's no real way to know that without knowing the deep details of the various funding and development costs.

That said, I'm not opposed to using SteamSpy or other forms of sales to judge the relative health of games. I just think we need to be careful about oversimplifying the economics of game development too much.

Because if people are wondering about steam sales, or post release sales, those prior sales just confound that information. They were also sold at a different price point. The original post was about sales on steam this month, which should not include kickstarter key activations if you want an accurate comparison. It's not about being pedantic (or trying to undervalue kickstarter) it's about comparing apples to apples.
Ah, okay. Yeah, I get it now. I was also thinking there might be other noise that filters into those sales numbers as well, but for a Kickstarter game, that's obviously going to be the biggest blip.

Speaking of disappointing adventure games, I wish Dreamfall Chapters didn't fall over. Everything I've heard about it, outside of a brief look at the first episode, has made me more bummed out about it

I just wanted The Longest Journey 2, but they seem to be doing everything they can to ensure that never happens. Like, TLJ got me into adventure games... and now, between DONTNOD's Life is Strange, TellTale's output, and the marvels of Wadjet Eye, this disappointment doesn't even phase me.
But he would have said God of War Ascension of whatever it was so GoW:A.

On Wikipedia, God of War 4 redirects to God of War (20XX, PS4) so I feel confident in my previous assessment.
in this gen

rpg means action games with stats/equipment or whatever but mediocre combat

action game means less stats shit but ok combat

Genre degeneration gets worse: Roguelike now means roguelite; ARPG now means those weird twin-stick co-op games that seem to be everywhere; MOBA won over AoS; and everything is an MMO in one way or another

Like, Walking Simulator is the only good new genre to spring up. Although afslappet will always have a place in my heart.

This month I think I'll buy Shadow Warrior 2 (although the random levels and loot stuff don't really give me good vibes) and the Dark Souls 3 season pass. Maybe Unloved as well.

How Metroidvania is Outland? It's got the tag and i want/have to know.

Is it purely dependant of the colour system? or do you get other items and abilitys along the way?

It's not really a Metroidvania at all. Yes, you get new abilities to unlock new areas, but it's entirely linear, so there's no element of exploration. The game's more focused on the "Ikaruga as a platformer" thing.

morningbus

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
Outland has not aged well.

That's a kind way of putting it.

that sidescroller? it played fine last i've played it, didn't finish it tho

How much you've played of it is kind of the point, though. The game never does anything great with its gimmick and you end up doing the same things over and over again.

It's early XBLA design that didn't have to do anything that special to impress it's audience.

I have outland on my BC XB1. I recall even on 360 not being too impressed though.
Plan to check it again at some point.

Even if it is, he can play with bots.

I need to get around to finishing the 10K kills achievement and the rounds played one, as those (besides like the level 3 speed one) are the last two achievements I need in Quake Live. But the game not letting me host a server that counts as an achievement due to my NAT or router or something stopped me cold. It'd take me far longer to get those kills against some of the pros (especially as there is no insta-freeze servers last time I played) than against bots.

Outland has not aged well.

I think it's still a good game - I played through it last year, and it's a game I keep revisiting because it's one of a handful of games my nephew likes to play on weekends - but it's definitely been outpaced by other, similar games that do what Outland does well and increases complexity and depth.

True. Bot support is something that is sorely lacking from most modern substitutes, which, while understandable given internet access is almost universal, can be frustrating when the game in question released some time ago and you find yourself up against a seemingly insurmountable skill ceiling. Bots, as "dumb" as they are, at least allow novices to develop a fundamental understanding of the finer points of play -- spawn points, power up control, and weapon familiarity.
