Finished The Longest Journey. There's been plenty said about how obtuse the puzzles are, but even I was surprised at just how bad they were. The rubber ducky/clamp/key puzzle was the worst offender, but there were plenty of others that were almost as wtf. I had a walkthrough open on my other monitor the whole time, so when it came to the puzzles, I could just say, "Oh, you" and keep on playing, but back in the day, I would've been tearing my hair out.
The story was ultimately a bit more pedestrian than I expected given the game's reputation. It was mired in fantasy tropes just as much as it poked fun at them, and I think the game perhaps spent a bit too much time in Arcadia in the middle stretch. The ending was also a bit too neat for my tastes, but I guess Dreamfall more than made up for that, eh?
I loved playing as April though. She's likeable from the opening moments of the game, and I grew more and more attached to her as the game went on.Given the length of the game, probably 15+ hours, I really did feel like we went on a long, long journey together. I can't wait to see what they did with her character in Dreamfall - hopefully she's been treated well.
Good little review.
I'm curious to see how you like Dreamfall and (eventually) Dreamfall Chapters. I've only played the former, but found it to be a massive bummer after sharing a sentiment similar to what you have regarding TLJ.
Now that I think of it, playing TLJ several years ago is what got me interested in adventure games to begin with. I haven't yet played the classic adventure games, but I've found the Wadjet Eye stuff to be utterly fantastic.
In a similar vein, TLJ was my favourite adventure game before I played the Blackwell series. So consider this a stealth recommendation for everyone to play the Blackwell games. One thing to note: like TLJ, make sure you play them in order.
