You can't test duplicate keys short of activating the game for yourself or another user (which isn't really a test as the key has then been used) as Steam prioritises "You already own this game" over "Duplicate product code". What you can do, though, if you think you've used a key, is go through the account retrieval process and input the key there -- if you don't get an e-mail, then the key hasn't been used. The annoying part is that said form doesn't verify the key, so you have make super-duper sure the characters precisely correct and that there are no spaces.

It's tagline was "If you think this game is boring, you are boring."
It actually got really weird reviews, I remember Game Informer and others game it 1s while GamePro and a few others gave it 4/5.

You only get the dupe error if the key is tied to a game you don't own and it has already been used. I wish Valve would swap the two errors around or even just combine them in cases where they're both applicable.

The most cringeworthy title I can think of is probably "Big Mutha Truckers 2: Truck Me Harder." What a terrible title.

In the sense that Larian was able to find a publisher and continue making games, yes it was a moderate success. Beyond Divinity the follow up to Divine Divinity was a rushed title that was forced out of the door to save the company from closure. But since they launched their own digital distribution service, and put their game catalog on third party services like Steam they have had a much stabler financial situation. Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity: Original Sin which came after the service are the two titles that have had less publisher meddling and more developer freedom to innovate.
Sales numbers aside, Divine Divinity is also well regarded if standing in the shadow of Black Isle and early Bioware titles.
The head of Larian, Swen Vincke, didn't go into much detail of the events, but I imagine the CEO of the publisher had final say over the exact name.
