What if you had the class model a future course after a video game. So they set their own milestones, create their own rewards and incentives, maybe even allow for powerups that would allow them to complete objectives more easily. You could divide the class into teams that sometimes compete and sometimes cooperate depending on the current task. You might even have a list of achievements, and display who has achieved what, who is currently leading, etc. I am reminded of fitocracy and their approach to fitness.

has anyone noticed that the sale isn't really a sale anymore?

Some of these games have been stuck on the same pricepoint for like eons.

I mean, Simcity 4 has been $5 for the last 3 years of sale. What gives?

That's the thing that's sucky about digital age sales. The pricing never drops as the product age. It just tends to hover at around one pricepoint, and after the sale, it jumps back up, then jumps back down to the same price point again.

You aren't the only person to notice. Several games sell for these prices frequently on other sites as well.

I'm a teacher, so I thought I would design a contest that mixes gaming and teaching in a fun way.

Free $25 game to the best entry to this contest. Contest ends in two hours.

Here's the scenario. You are a teacher and your students love video games. You want to teach them something that incorporates their interests into your instruction.

To make this appropriately challenging, let's stick with K-12. That's all the grades before college. If you're from a country aside from the US, just translate these grades into however your school system is structured.

This project must

  1. -Have several elements of choice on the part of the student
  2. -Give students the chance to interact socially in some way, either through groups or as a whole.
  3. -Have at least three steps so it takes students more than one day to complete
  4. -Integrate video games in some way, while still teaching the required content.
  5. -Teach some concept in one or more of the following areas: English-Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Art, and/or Music. Classes such as Biology, Algebra, Economics, etc. fall into these categories.
  6. -Have a way to test to see if the students learned what you taught them This does not have to be a written exam. Just describe what they'll do.

***I don't want a lesson plan.*** You are most likely not a teacher. I want you to tell me how you would make video games relevant to what the students are learning.

Bear in mind that I have successfully taught game-related lessons in Math and Social Studies so I know such a project can be done.

Your entries will be judged on the basis of thoughtful response and creativity. If you are unfamiliar with state or Common Core standards, just consult a website. However, I'm more interested in how you design the project. I just want a description of what you'll do.

-Divide in groups (Lets say 5 groups)

-Make each group pick games which are set on historical events. (Crusader Kings 2 (medieval period), Europa Universalis 3 (Renaissance through Enlightenment), Victoria 2 (Industrial/Colonial era) , Hearts of Iron 3 (World War 2), Sengoku (Sengoku period Japan) and March of the Eagles (Napoleonic Wars).

-I would discuss aspects of the selected eras so they have part of the research easier. They will have to do their own research too which shouldn't be hard in the era of the internet.

-The students will have to write on the accurate information and non accurate information of these games. (Social and political events, clothing, religion, music etc) Also there would be a part simply talking about the game as it was so they can have fun with it too but the main aspect would be the historic part of the project I would expect 5-8 pages of this including their own commentary to the research.

-After they have the written report of the work discuss about their research and what they have learned from it. It would be like 5-10 mins of discussion since they already have the written report done. I would ask questions based on what they wrote on their essay which shouldn't be hard for them to do since they should have written that report themselves.

Fracas's LittleBigPlanet Book Project

uKIAhPb.png

(this assumes multiple people in your class have access to a PS3 or a teacher could provide a couple)

Part 1:

-Put students into groups (or just let them pick their own)
-Assign all groups the same book; the differences among the groups are themes embedded in the work that each must focus on (for lower grade levels where it may be difficult to adequately delve into themes, you could just assign different kids' books to each group)
-Have the students read the book over a few days and provide a little explanation on what each theme means
-Each group must construct a LittleBigPlanet level based on these themes while also referencing plot points of the book. Give the students a day or two to plan everything out

Part 2:

-Either in class or at home, let the students make their levels. Ask them why they're doing what they're doing and how it demonstrates each theme. Encourage open discussion

Part 3:

-Each group presents their project, with every member explaining various aspects of the level and how it meets each theme. This part is graded

Part 4 (not necessary but would be fun nonetheless)

-Combine all the student's work into one giant level that should somewhat explain the book as a whole. Bonus points to students/groups with the fastest runs

LBP's all about expressing yourself, and I personally feel it would work especially well with literature or any media really.

But the problem is that I have to subject my students to LBP.

Pen and paper sounds way better than what we did. We had one day to play the 5th edition of the game and then did nothing with it after that. I mean it was great since I'm lazy, but no one even made it to the end of the Trail since that class was only 60 or 90 minutes long. Still have the cd version of that game laying around here somewhere. Shame it's not on GOG or Steam. Fuck the garbage mobile version of the Oregon Trail, it's terrible.

It was awesome. We played about 30-60 minutes a day and it took us about two months to get through it. About halfway though my friend was bitten by a rattlesnake and we had to decide if we should just forge on or detour to a nearby fort in the hopes of saving his life. That's a heavy choice for anybody but it really drives the concept what pioneer life was to a fourth gader. We diverted course, lost a couple days travel and he still died.

History Project Using Civilizations: High School or Middle School level

Introduce the basic concept of how the game plays and show them examples of the various historical figures in the game.

Next divide them up into groups and aloow them to play an expedited game of Civ V against the other groups. Go around to each group to offer them explanations and help as they get a handle on the game. (You may need to allow them to play into the next day; however long necessary for them to get just the most basic of grasps of how the game works).

The next day, now that students know how to play their job is to add a new historical figure to the game. Re-examine the game's portrayals of various leaders and explain how the attributes they are each given are related to historical facts about that figure. Now divide them up into their original groups again. Using their history book texts, they must now choose one new historical figure not already in the game to put into the game. They must do further research to learn more about the historical figure and then come up with an introductory paragraph for that character that resembles the introductions for the other characters already in game characters. They must then also explain the special bonuses/attributes this character wold have in the game and historically justify why they have those attributes. They will write up and turn in the results. The next day the results will be shared and the class as a whole will vote on their favorite new Civ addition.

As a bonus tell the class you are going to write to the developer and submit their suggestion for the next version of the game. Follow through.

Follow up essay assignment: have students write a research essay critiquing the game's presentation of one of the historical figures of their choosing in terms of accuracy.

I love the new market style.

Bioshock Infinite booster packs were $0.41+.
I put in a buy order for $0.35.
Someone listed one for $0.29.
The system bought it for me at $0.29.
