someone convince me how New Vegas is better than Fallout 3. This will largely determine whether I purchase it or not. Not that anyone cares whether I purchase it, but some people like convincing and are very good at it, so give it a go.

- Hardcore mode. Selectable mode that gives ammo weight, making the player make decisions about what you need to bring out into the desert. Companions can die, meaning you can't just run into any situation hoping to survive. You have to drink water, or risk dying. The game challenges you, and challenges you to think before acting.

- Companions have actual character, back stories and plots attached to them.

- Factions sort of matter this time around.

- World with plenty of empty desert vistas, but still more discovery and exploration as the previous title.

- Feels more like Fallout, thanks to the setting, RPG elements returned via HC mode and factions.

- Much, much better writing.

- More bugs, though.

A lot of ways, honestly. The by-the-numbers game balance is a big leap over Fallout 3, especially now that the game is patched. The writing/dialogue and overall plot structure is light years beyond what Bethesda accomplished in Fallout 3. The game feels very connected to Fallout 2 in lore, continuing on a lot of the themes and concepts introduced in that game, making it feel more like a proper Fallout sequel to the old games.

Really the only things I would give the nod to Fallout 3 over NV is the overworld and setpiece design. NV isn't quite as expansive and sometimes feels a bit cramped compared to Fallout 3 (and certainly compared to the older games), but there's still a ton of areas to explore compared to most RPGs of this nature.

Anyone who likes FPS games should pick up Singularity. It's a nice little shooter/adventure. Kinda reminds of Call of Duty high skill shooting mixed with Bioshock's ratio of atmosphere:action.

I double dipped on it. It's very good. The FOV is bad, but there's a config tool out there to fix it.

Really, great great game. One of my top ten from last year. Criminally overlooked.

Have a link to that FOV config tool? Bought the game earlier today.

Have the majority of the bugs been patched out now? I bought fnv, but don't want my pc to burst into flames as soon as I load it up.

So I went and picked up New Vegas at Best Buy (so I can put the savings into Alpha Protocol :D), and I have a question about activating a game on steam. Do you just activate the CD key from the library and let steam download and install the game itself?

Just need to know if I've got more downloading to do or if I can install from the disk without messing up the Steam integration. I do so love having everything neatly available through the steam client.

thinking about Alpha Protocol.. hmm

Thinking the same, but will I ever play it? Really?

Edit: $13.15 on ps3 from amazon and I prefer that over pc gaming due to dualshock 3 controller. I think I'll sit this sale day out.

I think it's up to you whether you want to install from disk (it shouldn't hurt your Steam integration because it is a Steamworks title), but if you just download it from Steam you'll get the latest version. If you install from disk you'll have to download a number of patches anyway.

I think it's time for me to finally buy Alpha Protocol, can't really lose at that price. I'm still on the fence about Singularity, I know it will be in my backlog for months.

BTW it should be a damn crime if a game doesn't support the 360 pad natively ;< Goddamn you Battlefield Bad Company 2!!!

I recently installed my on-sale purchase of Mass Effect 1 with the intent to sit on my couch with my gamepad and relive that experience on my PC.

Yeah, no gamepad support =[

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 1 & 2 really need to by part of the daily deals at some point.
Anyone think that will happen?
That is what I am waiting for also. They had one of the expansions early in the week so you would think they would put the full games up at some point.

DoWII and Chaos Rising together in a Gold pack are / were $16 on Amazon if that's an option for you. They activate on Steam so that's no issue.

Haha, it's funny to read this post considering that I played all the way through Alpha Protocol on PC with my dualshock 3 controller. If you want to play the uglier, choppy version of the game then go ahead, but I can't imagine paying almost 3X more for an inferior port of the same game.

Thanks, for some reason, I though NV was GFWL.

What happens if you get a prize for a game you dont own? I didnt pick up Retribution, but I plan to and I might as well get the helmet.
Valve have you covered:

Yes, the prize will work if you purchase the game at a later date. However, prizes will not show up in your game list. If you want to see your prizes (even for games you don’t own), you can see them in your “Account Details” view, which is accessible from the Steam Store.

it's a real bitch trying to get it to work with Battlefield. I quickly gave up - but am now a beast with kb/m - wouldn't think of going back to a controller.

Is that simple to set up? Never really investigated that.

Hmm, I just noticed STALKER Clear Sky is 50% off, when it definitely wasn't at the beginning of the sale. This isn't one of them secret daily deals is it? What to do, what to do..

Basically, did anyone notice if it was 50% off yesterday or the day before?

Bully acquired. I managed never to play it over all the console releases. I was always curious about it.
It's like GTA but in a school setting and a lot more comical. It's fun.

I already own and have beaten it for Wii, but maybe I should buy this just to see how it runs in my computer

Google MotionInJoy. It's not very difficult to run, at the very least it's worth a shot since you'll always be able to use your dualshock when a PC game supports pads.

While you wouldn't get the original campaign, that game is a standalone expansion (retribution).

I actually prefer the setting over Fallout 3. But I may be a bit biased because I LOOOVE the southwest.

So after having played 7 hours of BIT.TRIP Runner over the last week, I booted the game today and Commander Video was wearing some strange workout pants and glasses.

You can see the 1680x1050 screenshot here:
http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/540647129967672723/24D23E9B740B537DCA837D089205686270D21088/

While playing the game I got my butt burned by a campfire in one of the bonus levels, which unlocked an achievement I hadn't seen before for "burning my marshmallows on a campfire", which I guess explains the achievement?

Was this summer sale related? I thought BIT.TRIP Beat was the one that had the summer achievement?

Well I only have $8.45 so I cannot get the Doom pack since I can't get a prepaid card till tomorrow. Same thing happened during the holiday sale.

Sale doesn't end until 1PM EST so you should be able to run out in the morning and pick up a prepaid card. Next time, since this has happened to you before, consider pre-adding things to your Steam wallet or using Paypal with your bank account to pay.

God Dammit Mount and Blade. I gave a "great sword" to a companion and nothing about the achievement. Even went on multiple battles, spent the night at least 4 time on different cities, lost half my army and nothing about the achievement.

Went to the Steam Forums and they said the achievement is a little buggy, and multiple people only got it after spending 2-3 nights in a row on a camp.

I did it and tada, achievement unlocked.

Good thing the game is quite entertaining (I already knew about it, but never really played the Single Player campaign for reals). I don't want to stop playing... :D

It hasn't been for one of the tickets yet. Or could be for tomorrow or at a later day.

It's not as much that I prefer the setting itself, just that Obsidian isn't as skilled at actually physically constructing the world. Bethesda has a lot more experience in designing this type of game in a 3D fully open world setting, and I think it shows when comparing the two games.

Oh crap really? I've never downloaded patches for a game before. Where do I go to get them?

The thing is it was already a daily deal along with Beat. Very odd. Maybe for the last day best-of sale?

AFAIK, they've never discounted it in a sale. Xmas sale they had Chernobyl and Pripyat in a $5 bundle and Clear Sky was $10 the whole time. I think I'm gonna have to bite.

Now all that's left is Morrowind for ~75% off and this sale will have been a success :D

Yeah I just Googled the achievement name and it's not listed; GameFAQs lists the achievements but doesn't include it, and it's definitely vaguely summer related when you think about the theme (the achievement was called "Roastin.Marshmallows")

Here's the achievement icon:

Steam is defaulted to get them automatically, so you should already be up to date if the game is installed and you can launch it. Unless you manually disabled the auto-update feature.

It's kind of sad and happy at the same time when you try to buy a game e realize that you already owns the game. That just happened with Doom 3.

Thanks guys, I believe I will be picking it up tonight or early tomorrow. I'm pretty excited to get into the game.

I'm curious Gaffers. Does Bully Scholarship have any mods for graphics or whatever? Tbh I haven't attempted modding any Steam games, but in the past have added hi res texture packs, etc to games outside of Steam. Thoughts? I know Steam has the latest version of games which could present a problem with out of date modifications.
