Okay, some guy just talked to me about throwing my bolts in Stalker. WTF is he talking about? Gvaz mentioned it too.

It's from the book it's based on. You can toss bolts to detect invisible anomalies. Press 6, I think?

A game that requires a modification to even be brought up to the standards of 2007 is not one I'd champion for any reason.

There are other games on the PC that are far better examples.

And I use Control or C for crouch. Shift is melee or run depending on the game. Toggle Crouch is also on whenever possible.

Weenerz said:
C for crouch, ALWAYS! Never understood why games these days insist on having ctrl as the default.

3 fingers over WASD (can also hit q,e,r,f), thumb on space, pinkie on control. ergonomics over alliteration.

Remember those weird anomaly type things (circular transparent things) I mentioned? Well, sometimes in those areas there are artifacts. Artifacts are like...powerups. They're hidden though in these anomolies. your geiger counter even when you don't hold it will go off when theres anomolies nearby or weird radiation areas. You throw your bolts around, along with your geiger radar thing and you literally go "spelunking" until based on the radar and the bolts, you "unlock" an artifact for a short time, where you can then loot it.

You can sell it or keep it.

It doesn't require mods, not at least COP anyways. Does it get improved from them? Sure it does, what game doesn't?

I'd laud the fact that the game doesn't hold your hand, looks great by itself, supports extensive modding, and provides an unique experience something to put on the top ten PC only games.

I would not use STALKER as a good example of the superior master race.

WTF. STALKER is the epiphany of pc gaming. It is not dumb down. It doesn't hold your hand. It has complex shooting mechanics. The only fault of the game is that is buggier than what console players are accustomed to.

posting this again:

i'll be getting ANOTHER copy of Deus Ex Human Revolution. Friend of mine is selling it (PC version), Augmented Edition btw (contains deus ex 1, the soundtrack, making of video, artbook, animated storyboard, motion comic), for $43 (Original price is $53) . Its Steamworks so i'll be giving you the code to register it (the game will be gifted on GamersGate, once the release date is near a "show serial key" option will show up, you enter that on Steam and the client takes care of the rest). Cheaper than the regular edition (wich has none of the goodies!)

Update: might be the case that what my friend gets is the regular edition, cant know for sure right now, if that's the case it will still be up for sale at $40

PM if interested

The shooting mechanics aren't even complex, they're more realistic than other games say like halflife where the bullet is always dead center. Guns do not behave this way IRL. Guns need not be hitscan in videogames either.

Shadow of Chernobyl, at the very least, is certainly not in the category of "Epiphany of PC gaming." It's at best a pretty good shooter with severe UI and design problems. Anything would be a better example.

I'd like to make a judgement on Call of Pripyat, but it doesn't appear to want to load...
So then, what would you suggest?

Team Fortress 2? Counter-Strike? Deus Ex? World of Warcraft? Starcraft? Any RTS ever?

I played Wolfenstein 3D with a Gravis Gamepad...on PC. Doom and Duke Nukem 3D as well. In fact, while I'm perfectly capable of using the M/KB for gaming I've always preferred a pad when available. I simply find the keyboard uncomfortable in comparison, and I don't care all that much about competitive play or challenging difficulty.

As for crouch, that's always been "C" for me, and I'm not exactly sure which game started it. Maybe the original Half-life? I've never liked using left-cntl, as it's simply uncomfortable for my pinky to hold it down while the other fingers work WASD.

Stalker is probably the highest profile PC exclusive series outside of Blizzard's stuff. I think it's synonymous with PC gaming right now.

To say the gameplay has to be dumbed down around a controller though, is just wrong. Developers choose the level and complexity of the gameplay, not the controller.

Try playing STALKER with a gamepad to see what I mean. Why do you think console FPS have auto-aim?

Marrshu said:

Why not? It's the perfect example of what games can be; challenging, provoking, haunting, etc. It offers an experience you won't readily find elsewhere.

Wazzim said:
How do you run then? With CTRL?

Cap Lock.

I do this too. I think it is because I have small hands, but control makes me cramp too. But Shift to crouch and Cap Lock to run works great. Everything else stays the same.

I hate using the number keys, though, I always loose my placing on WSAD. I prefer mouse wheel for item/weapon select.

Have you played Half-Life 2 recently? All the weapons there are incredibly bad accuracy. Except the shotgun, the combine rifle, and the crossbow. The combine rifle, and the crossbow have laughable ammo, so the Shotgun is pretty much the go-to weapon in half-life.

Two MP fps games (one of which is on the consoles now with limited success), an fps rpg that is getting a reboot, an mmo, an rts?

This is your list?

One question before I do something stupid and buy Guild Wars.

If I buy the Eye of the North from Newegg, can I use the Steam games also?

You barely played it--how can you give an informed opinion of the game? It's pretty widely regarded as one of the most underrated/hidden gem games of the PC.

This is how I do it as well.

Yeah but the problem with those of us with small hands is that pink on crouch and second finger on A is too far apart, especially with middle finger on W to move forward. It strains your fingers.

Not to mention it shows off how a PC game can be made on the other side of the planet on a shoestring budget and find critical acclaim with basically no advertising and be modded to hell and back to make it an even BETTER game. Let's see a console game do that.

I was naming off random examples, not making a list. I don't really care, but I wouldn't hold a game like STALKER as a good exmaple.

I played it two hours. Without the mod, it's barely functional as a game. With the mod, it's a pretty good but flawed game. I don't care to play it more.

Speaking of which, does anyone know how to fix the error with CoP? Any time I try to start it, X-Ray 1.6 Engine crashes.

The revolver has practically perfect aim. If you use zoom to line up a shot it'll basically never miss over absurd distances.

I just bought Deus Ex: GOTY edition (to warm up for Human Revolution), Stalker, and both Stalker expansions.

Total: $13

I feel like I just robbed a brothel.

If I wasn't so poor atm I would have bought the Valve pack, damn these moving expenses.

Probably just the Civ V DLC I am missing today... rest doesn't particularly interest and/or I already have it. :)

Pickups so far:
Back to the Future
Just Cause 2 + DLC
Hamiltons Great Adventure
SpaceChem
Hoard
Magicka
Frozen Synapse

Definitely enjoying both SpaceChem and Frozen Synapse the most so far, both excellent, excellent games.

Seriously though do people still play Guild Wars? Though I suppose it doesn't matter with all the new people that will be picking it up from this sale....

Did you verify the cache? what are you running (os)?

Sure, but it has like 12 bullets which are really scarce. I barely use it, shotgun and the Gravity Gun are the only good weapons in the series.

The rifle is ok-ish, when you are in the car or something that gives infinite ammo.

Vista 32-bit, and I'll go verify the cache now.

About two to three hours in. I recall the last thing I was doing was defending some sort of ambush. Then the ambush suddenly failed right as it started. *shrugs*

Hmm. "Twisted Pixel Games comp" has just been added to the registry containing The Maw, Maw DLC and one unnamed app. This could either be more Maw DLC, or maybe Splosion Man/Comic Jumper is coming to PC...

EDGE also got added, and there's nothing Tim Langdell can do about it

hey guys,

i saw some guild wars discussion a few pages but i still have some questions.

i've never played an MMO before, i've played PSO but that doesn't really count i guess. is there a huge learning curve i'll never figure out?

i tried WoW on trial, but warcraft lore didn't appeal to me and i didn't like the graphics style very much. does GW have an interesting story? i mainly play games for story so idk if i should start playing MMOs.

i have no friends that play MMOs, so will it still be enjoyable?

what happens when the servers shut down with GW2 comes out or whenever and i have it sitting on my steam? does that equal just an unplayable game?

Bought Beat Hazard.

Holy colors show Batman! I played with effects at 50% and my eyes are sore. You got to be crazy or a robot to play it at 100%.

Seizures aside, very, very fun game and the possibility of using your own music adds a lot of replayability. Gaf suggestion did not disappoint.

Preferences change and choice is king. Nobody should care what someone else is playing with, especially on PC, which is the platform of choice. Just about all games should strive to support gamepads as well as KB/M. Except RTS and MMO's, those should always be KB/M.
You can't say choice is king and then say "except these two genres should always be KB/M." That's exactly what you're arguing against; that KB/M is superior in your preference. It's other people's preference to play RTSs with a gamepad, and you can clearly see that that's silly.

But as long as they're not playing on my team, I don't care who's using what in an FPS or RTS or anything; I just think it would do them well to get used to KB/M.

How accurate do I need to be to throw you a medic kit or revive you in Battlefield? Or repair your vehicle?
I hope I missed something because you should be doing more than that in Battlefield...

People recommended that game?

They be crazy. Not enjoyable at all topped off with headaches.

This is hyperbole and only representative of your short experience.

The game clearly has it's issues, but nothing prevents you from playing/completing the game. I didn't play with mods until my third playthrough, mostly because I didn't know they existed.

People will probably tell you otherwise, but as a single-player game it's just an average rpg. Though imo this is true for any MMO or co-op focused game(GW is not a MMO).

Which of the Civ V DLC is worth getting? I'm willing to get 1 or 2.

Personally, I would go the ones that add extra Civs.... soooo any of these I suppose.

Double Civilization and Scenario Pack: Spain and Inca
Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia
Civilization and Scenario Pack: Denmark - The Vikings
Sid Meier’s Civilization® V: Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II)

I don't think the servers are gonna shut down for quite awhile, a few more years at least.

The quests are a little more interesting than WOW, but I haven't played it enough to really comment on it. There's definitely a lot of content to go through and I think you can do most of it solo, if you want.

As for learning curve it's really easy to pick and play, not sure about the more complex stuff.
