Steam Summer Sales Thread: remember: you can actually play after buying

I realize people shit on Invisible War a lot. I get it. Anyhow, I enjoyed it some back in the day and I want to purchase it with the sale. It's, like, pocket change. Come on.

Anyways, does anyone know if it is playable with a controller (yes... yes...) and if there are any similar mods to give the graphics a bump? Edit: Mostly looking for 16:9, really.

By that logic, you SHOULD buy Invisible War if you're on some sort of quest to become a mod, so you can formulate your own opinion on it and determine that it does indeed suck. ;)
Downloading.

It's one of those things where it's an okay game on it's own, but being the sequel to one of the most highly regarded PC games definitely works against it.

exactly my thoughts on it as well

just go in with very low expectations

Okay, so I took the plunge on Guild Wars. We need a place to organize for all the new GAFers who are picking this up during the sale. Anyone have any great ideas? There's a "GAF plays" thread that was last posted to a few weeks ago.

The "And Yet it Moves" ticket it was kinda tricky because I lost the bats way back before the water drops and had to do the level again. I kinda enjoyed it though. It happened to be on the level I left off on when I last played it so I might go finish the game now. It looks quite nice on my TV and I dig using my pad.

I think IW is better than people give it credit for, it's mediocre at worst. It's a case of Chrono Cross syndrome I think. Practically nothing could have been Deus Ex 2 and had been lauded. I think it's lucky EA apparently changed SS3 to Dead Space, the weight those IPs bring isn't worth touching typically I think.

Not sure, the email system has been pretty wonky. It should pop up if you have your client open, though.

I'm wondering if it popped up on my home machine. I'm away until tomorrow and was checking to see if I had received anything on my laptop.

Yes, although the first level is not one of the better levels and you might feel a little overwhelmed and underwhelmed simultaneously. If you play, wait until you've gotten to the airplane about 3 missions in, and that's when the game starts getting truly amazing.

Yes, it's still fun today.

No, Invisible war is not worth $2.50. It's a running joke that you have to hate Invisible War to become a mod here (my thread about the ways in which the game failed, long EviLore's similarly negative impressions of the game)

There's exactly one mod for Deus Ex that you'll want. Someone wrote a DirectX 10 rendered for all UE1 games which is compatible with Deus Ex. :) There are a few other texture mods but nothing that you GOTTA HAVE.

Cheers.

Ha. It was around that time that I stopped posting my rants about the game. Figured I no longer had to crusade alone against it. I wish search worked, because I made some extremely long rants about how it sucked. And unlike most of my stream of thought rants, I actually put to thought into the case against it.

Its biggest crime (aside from all the reasons it sucked) was it completely invalided your choices in Deus Ex. JC is one of the biggest bad asses in gaming history. And although they tried to give scenarios that explained whichever ending you choose, it didn't work.
When I destroyed that evil system and sent them back to the stone age,
the sequel was insulting.

Getting an update on Sanctum. Upcoming ticket maybe? You guys should buy it either way as it's a fun game.
Sale too I hope. Thought the demo and concept were pretty interesting.

Is the gifting system backed up. I still haven't received the NFS: HP I was supposed to get as a gift.

If anyone else out there has an extra copy of Hot Pursuit they can gift, I'd love to buy it for cheaper than the steam sale. $18 is to much for me and this is pretty much the only game I REALLY wanted from this sale and it looks like it won't go lower that $18, way over my budget for it :(

Ah, wow... appears that Stalker (US$3.74), (not sure about Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat) is cheaper on AU steam then US steam.

If anyone needs/wants it gifted... hit me up in the gifting thread/pm me.

I'm still on the fence about Shift 2 Unleashed. I kinda enjoyed Shift 1, but to be honest the handling can be really frustrating, especially since I'm used to full blown sims like GTR 2 and console games like GT and Forza. Then again, there are mods that change the handling and physics.

So GAF, what's your opinion on Shift 2? Worth the $$?

Damn, Stalker complete is beautiful. But fuck, very inaccesible.

Starting quest, then fuck off, figure it out yourself. Where do go? What do I do? Resting? Medkits?

Nada. The game literally told me to fuck off lol.

Any sort of starting tips?

Anyone still have a spare copy of Frozen Synapse? I've got $6 here with your name on it, if so. I really would like to try the game.

Human Revolution takes place significantly before DE1, DE:IW takes place a while after. There's no continuity reason to play DE:IW. As I mentioned in the very long thread I linked you, it's not a good game. You might want to play it just to understand why it's not a good game or a good sequel, but beyond that if you're pressed for time definitely not and I don't recommend it.
Im going to take this to heart because there are no steam refunds. I will play it with the same mindset one would have when playing DNF - purely for historical reasons.

We can all agree that playing an RTS game on the PC with a gamepad is just plain dumb. But playing an FPS/3rd person game on the PC with a gamepad or a keyboard/mouse just comes down to personal preference.
no, it is also very dumb. Not as bad as a RTS w/controller but it is pretty weak.

Looking at the publisher packs is depressing - I wish there was a way to upgrade the packs I bought a year or two ago without buying the entire thing all over again. Using THQ's as an example, my pack didn't include Darksiders, Warhammer Retribution, Metro (though I bought that on its own), or the ATV game, so maybe a $20 upgrade fee could apply in a case like that.

No idea how they'd implement it, though, but it would get me to spend even more money again.

What are the odds of ME2 being a daily deal? How low do you think it would go?

I could see it at $5 - the 360 version already hits $10 at retail and EA was literally giving away PC copies of ME2 a few months back.

Just tried Monday Night Combat for some time. Basically, it's about one team trying to meet the goals and the other team consist of invisible characters that melee strike, jump ten meters into the air then runs away at light speed and they are in turn backed up by snipers. :D

There's a gaffer after this, can't remember who, I'll bold it to make it catch his eye easier in case.

Me! Thanks for the bold. Now I wonder if anyone from the AU is awake that can hook me up with the $12 deal :D. 3chopl0x is probably sleeping.

Same publisher as BC2, roughly same window, so I'd say about the same potential price. You might get it for £5. They have a reason to go low because of their in-game DLC prices.

I'm the opposite. If you're only going to play one, play CoP.

Yes, but that's not what he asked. CoP is the best one so if he's only going to play one than CoP it is. But do I only recommend playing one? No. That's why he should start with SoC.

I often play 3rd person action games with a gamepad, so I get that, especially when the kb/m support is poor...but I do not understand playing FPS without kb/m. Does not compute.

I think I've played three console FPS games and only enjoyed one of them (Goldeneye). I can't stand it.

Really. Playing FPS or third person games with a gamepad is dumb? What exactly is dumb about it? That you don't use it and can't stand when others do? I mean where is the hate for controller preference coming from? PC is the platform of choice, not restrictions. Millions of people have no trouble playing FPS with their gamepads and even prefer that style of controller. I really fail to see how ones choice of controller is "dumb".

Not sure if I want to buy Call of Pripyat cause I just got fallout 3 new vegas yesterday..

Also still on the fence about Civ 5, loved Civ 4, just.. It'll eat up so much of my time, and it's been cheaper elsewhere right? and it's steamworks?

Heh, I don't know if this'll work or if it was just an anomaly, but I was buying some games. Clicked pay by paypal then the paypal site opened. Logged in and whatnot and realised I didn't want to pay by paypal as I have a balance in my account I didn't touch.
So I clicked "cancel and return to steam" and it came up saying "Thank you for your purchase".

The games are in my list and are fully downloaded and playable. It'll probably get sorted on Steams side, but it's a major flaw if it works like that.

Here's a tip, explore. Search around. Those circular transparent things? whip out your geiger thing and look for a little item to pick up (artifact). Throw a bolt at them. If it doesn't bounce back, you're good. if it does, avoid it.

Just take in the whole zone. If the area starts going red and you hear soemthing on the comm, look at your minimap/pda for the nearest shelter and go there. stop everything and get there asap.

When you meet someone, talk to them. see if they need anything and if they sell anything. loot whatever tickles your fancy, but you don't need tons of ammo or tons of guns, just carry like 2 guns max and the ammo for it, at least until you get an exoskeleton. Hoard gold, you'll need it later on as you progress because the best things are expensive and it's nice to have a buffer.

You are a scavenger in a wild enviroment

Aim for the head.

STALKER isn't really complex in any way, but the beauty of the game is that it's harsh. They toss you out in an unforgiving world full of nasty foes with only a few shitty, unreliable guns to protect yourself with. I would recommend trying to be diligent with your inventory, sell often and always keep a few weapons and a healthy stock of ammo for them since you never know when you'll find yourself in a sticky situation. Aside from that, you gotta learn through experience, it's what STALKER is all about.

It can be brutal but it's so worth it for the moments when you overcome the oods.
