I finally won my first rank match online! (PS4) Tears are streaming down my face. 1-13. I'm so happy. I'm using an Xbox One controller (Cronus Max Plus). The only "fight-stick" I have is this thing:

I'll try to see if it works with ps4 using Cronus Max. Time to retire since I'm afraid I'll run into an Nash player next. Nash is my kryptonite.

I would trade ranked working with battle lounges working in a second.
I would trade your talent with mine in a heartbeat. Already a 7 win streak? I haven't won a single match. But I sure will at some point. :)

Getting my fight stick tomorrow, anyone in here wants to do some sparring?
Need practice, and all that.

I do. I'm a super scrub though, so don't expect to much :p
Send me a PM with your CFN's and we can get some match practice together.

Well I got a HORI stick for €36.99.
Should be good for the beginning. Noted down your CFN, will add you when I have everything ready, looking forward to it :)
Hah, that's the one I was thinking about getting too if I decide to get a stick. How do we play together though? I just make a lounge and you can join?

Picked up a HORI fightpad today and I'm playing much better. Button layout is SO much better! It also maps L3 to one of the shoulder buttons so resetting in Training is more convenient.

I think it's awesome that there haven't been any noticeably "good" or "bad" characters at all in this game. Game's balance is really good so far. I know it hasn't been long, but it's going really well.

Haha, funny, I can report then how well it plays with the HORI stick then :)
Yeah basically, you can invite people when you have the CFN.
I think you can make the lobby private too?

Create a lounge with a private slot and then invite him from your CFN list. Go to CFN and search for rivals and then find him in there and add him to favorites.

lol I have no talent, Like, seriously, this isnt false modesty or anything. Why do you think im playing Gief? I cant pull a simple combo to save my life. :)

95% of these wins are absolutely meaningless, I would be shocked if this wasnt these people's first fighting game

Ill still take the wins tho :p

Anyone for some lounge battle? I dont care if you are pro or not. Its nice with practice. Not really that good with the game. I am an OK Karin player, but want to practice fundementals mostly with all characters.

Fight me.

Yeah, there're some things I don't like about him (could do with less 2-hit normals), but I'm really gravitating towards him given that he & Sim are a rare breed for now.

EDIT: Design-wise I think he's the best new character in a long time. Doesn't replace Sagat's menacing presence, but still makes for a good fit with the 4 kings.

It's why I played Tager in BB. Grapples for days.

Getting a 150$ stick last year was my motivation to get good. Love my stick, didn't want to let it down.

My motivation to get a stick was that, somehow, I keep slipping and hitting the fucking PS button all the time and the opponent gets a free 30 seconds to style on me while I panic, trying to get back into the game.

-_-

I agree that which controller you use ultimately doesnt matter. I disagree that its a good idea to wait until you've spent ages with a pad to move on to a stick, that'll only make the transition harder. Better to try both out initially and then invest in one or the other I think.

Not saying to spend ages. Just saying to get the fundamentals down/see if you like fighting games before going all out on a stick. No need to buy a stick just because you heard it is impossible to do well with a pad. I have only played pad until sfv and while I'm not as good with a stick, the trasition isn't bad. You just need to practice with it, just like you have to everytime you try out a different pad. While I like playing around with a fight stick, I can't say I need one and would maybe be upset if I dropped $200 bucks on one since I'm no pro at fighting games (just a casual scrub). Luckily, I snagged my TE S for $60 bucks.

I agree though, if you have an opportunity to try both out (many people probably don't) go that route, however, I think a pad will probably still feel more natural since it is what you use everyday for all games.

Any UK Players fancy running some games at some point?

I'm no good at the moment but hoping a few solid games will help me get into the swing of things.

I have a stick (however don't let that fool you into thinking I'm decent!)

I'm down. CFN is Clueless.

Awesome writeup Secret Character! G I E F B O Y S

c.LK - a small quick low kick. I don't use this normal much, but it could have the same use as the standing one. It also combos into lariat if you are close enough.

You can use it after cr. jab and it pushes you just far enough that if your opponent is mashing jab it will whiff and you won't get hit by spd.

MP - This is an odd one because it doesn't fill any kind of need that 'Gief might need. I need to do more research on this move.

I think you want to use it like in SF4. Whiff punish bc it's more damaging than jab and faster to come out than st. mk.

f.MK - This is 'Geif's overhead and a fantastic pressure tool. Use this to catch crouching opponents and also to set up traps involving SPDs. If you have a scared opponent, use this to approach and churn that 360 out to hit a LP SPD from 1/3 screen away. It's magical. It's also great as a meaty because it beats a LOT of stuff.

This hits high? I'm not sure about that one. Also as a meaty counterhit it combos into jab so use it to get that last bit of life from your opponent if you need pixel damage.
HP - A long range poke with Crush power and super armor. This move has RANGE and you need to use it as much as possible. It also has one hit of super armor so don't be scared to use this to catch jump-ins and people who throw out errant pokes.

I'll note that you must charge HP for it to have armor. An easy distinction to mistake.

c.HK - This is his sweep. Use this frequently to score your precious knockdowns.

Use it as you must, but as it's a sweep it's heavily punishable on block.

360 + P - Spinning Pile Driver (can be EX, can be in the air)
The SPD is the meat and potatoes of the Zangief game plan. Your entire strategy when playing him is "How can I land SPD and how can I set up the next SPD." This move does proportionate damage and stun equal to the button used at the cost of range for higher power. LP version has absurd range and can catch people from much farther than it used to in any other SF title. HP version does really crazy damage and stun, but is only usable from point blank range.

I think that's overstating the case a bit. You can scare people with the threat of SPD, but never actually do it because you're looking to keep hitting them out of the air with cr. hp and stopping jumps with grounded buttons after pressure. It is however, very good.

In the air, SPD is a strange beast. The hitbox on it is very, very large but missing means you'll be taking damage as the recovery on it is terrible. If you can read that your opponent is going to jump, do this. If you know they're using a move that is considered airborne, tiger-knee the input and it will catch them. This works on Bison's scissor kicks, Birdie's command grab, and a number of other moves.
The EX version is strike invulnerable on start-up but not throw invulnerable, so don't use it when you could get a normal throw. The air EX version is special in that it hits when just about nothing else will. You can use it after finishing a successful V-Trigger.

The Air EX also has some invincibility. Not a lot though, so it won't beat an invincible uppercut.
360 + K - Running Bear Grab (can be EX)
This move is very underutilized among Zangief players I've seen. Geif runs forward and grabs the opponent. The EX version has super armor and is buffed by Trigger activation.
Use this to get people who will run away and might not have an answer for it. Example, jump in with HK, and use Running Bear. The opponent will more then likely get hit by it because it's a surprise move.

I use it a lot...too much probably :(

I'd say test out your opponent's reactions with it before overdoing it. If they have extreme max punishes against it, be careful. Don't remove it from your repetoire, just be ready for the loss in life if you fail to hit with it.

HP + HK - V-Trigger
Geif turns bright red and sucks the opponent in and, if you hold the buttons down, begins twirling around with a lariat styled move. The activation is projectile invulnerable and the vacuum acts the same way that Seth's did in SFIV. Use this activation to get a surprise SPD in.
The other property his Trigger has is that it makes all of his super armor moved (V-Skill included) have UNLIMITED super armor. EX Running Bear is now super scary and his V-Skill gets crazy good.
You can also create multiple vacuum effects if you use it correctly.

Of note: tapping the two buttons after activation sucks them in with no hits. Holding it suckes them in for the hits. I had no idea EX RBG was effected by the V-trigger! Awesome.

I feel like I have lost to absolute beginners. :(
When I play them I get lazy and don't know what my next move should be, when I play better players, I freak out and stops thinking. I gotta train that nerve of steel.

I guess the engine died again, no more matches. I need a new car ;_;

going back to the skill (or lack thereof) talk, yeah, its simple stuff like for example, Im not very good, but I know what a crossup is, and I know how to use it. Most of these players cant block it

(thats when you jump behind an opponent and you land a flying attack basically on their back so you actually have to block the other way, Gief's body splash is lovely for this)

and im patient. I dont go in. Most of these wins people are just going ham on me and im like "ok, sweep" "ok, spinning lariat"

its the kind of stuff you learn over years of fighters, even if your execution is terrible (which mine is)

Because a lot of people are asking 'Gief questions, here is a basic Zangief primer:
HP + HK - V-Trigger
Geif turns bright red and sucks the opponent in and, if you hold the buttons down, begins twirling around with a lariat styled move. The activation is projectile invulnerable and the vacuum acts the same way that Seth's did in SFIV. Use this activation to get a surprise SPD in.

Some good stuff here, nice write up.

One thing with V-trigger is you can also combo into it, notably off of his already great HP. HP into full v trigger hit into air EX 360 does a disgusting amount of damage. If you have no meter, HK after they pop up will flip them in front of you in LP 360 range.
