This is a common thing, they don't have the funding/resources to do a larger study so they do a smaller one to get funding/access to data then proceed with the actual study. They even state in the abstract
It's purely an attempt at getting a shot at a bigger study. It's done all the time.

The way I avoided bullying in high school was to stay out of the pecking order entirely. Just hanged out with a few people who were pretty cool and didn't get involved in any social ladder stuff. In terms of my place in the overall class I was non existent.
But yeah, makes sense. Bullies have to keep their place on the top so they crush people trying to climb up or make fun of people on the bottom to assert their dominance. Guilt or sympathy isn't an issue because the lower ranking people aren't "cool" so there isn't any reason to care about them. To bullies they're just a setup for a joke, nothing more nothing less. Hell, lots of times people might not even know they're bullies. Any practical joke or prank that you might see as lighthearted fun could be interpreted as bullying on the other end.

The only solution is to teach your kid to fight back, otherwise he will be bullied into depression, low self-esteem, end up with shit job/promotion prospects, mountains of debt, while his childhood bully surpasses him in success, credit score, and eventually becomes your kid's boss.
Your child will be crying himself to sleep every night while his bully/boss and CEO are talking about how much "Fuck Face" was such a lovable goober back in high school all while discussing the next big project for the company while they fist bump and London-bridge your kid's wife.

I feel like there isn't one sweeping factor in what makes all bullies do what they do. Why can't there be some bullies looking for attention that they don't get at home and others who have a desire for social dominance?

It's true...pretty much the people who I recall bullied me the most, as in the insults that really stuck with me and got me down, are now highly successful.
Now the stereotypical after-school special bully, yeah, they fucked up in life, but that was no surprise---and while their insults and such may have hurt at the moment, they didn't really have as long term of an effect on me as some of the popular peers not accepting me or outright ostracizing me.
The sad truth is, if you're of low social status in high school, bully or bullied, you're probably going to stay that way for the rest of your life. It's something I've learned to accept. I was a failure in high school, I was a failure in college, and now I'm a failure as an adult. And there's probably nothing I can really do to change that.

You didn't even refer to an article in your original post, you only said that the article in the OP didn't change your perception that bullying is motivated by feelings of inferiority, followed by an personal anecdote from your adolescence.
Yeah the bully growing up to be a loser never really rang true, in my experience anyway. A lot of the bullies at my school grew up to be pretty successful. If your dominant and push other people around unfortunately that can get you places in society. Also some of the bullies grew up to be nice guys who grew out of that behaviour.

Surveys aren't studies or research. We really need to stop treating them like they are.
The whole 80s-90s notion that the nerd would get a STEM degree and become rich, handsome, and successful was a lie. The bully will receive the same STEM, get promoted to management, and still bully you with those project deadlines. Then when you retire, your bully will lobby or legislate to repeal your medical insurance and you end up crapping your pants frequently due to a medical condition. Then you as he walks by with his cane, he cackles his old man self away while walking to the next RNC meeting.

I've always known this to be true - you can tell in how they interact with the world.
The common representation of the troubled bully with self-esteem issues has always bothered me as someone who spent his whole childhood being bullied by the happiest, most successful kids in school. It's like our media trying to mete out some sort of karmic justice to bullies that we're unable to do in the real world.

Well, it's funny considering none of the bullies at my school and high school made anything of their lives.
Some work on construction, some keep the "family business" (mostly agricultural activities), a few became entrap in the criminal environment (is Mexico, after all) and end up in jail or worse. I believe one or two where granted public service positions by another of my classmates, one of the guys outside of their "bullying". Now they have to serve and be humble.
It was amusing knowing some of them were looking for a chance to talk to me after they find out I was working in the US, specially since they where badmouthing me before, when they found out I was living in France.
Pro-tip: It makes wonders for your sanity and well being in high school if you smash one the lesser bullies face against a pole, column or wall. It worked for me (even the principal was amused).

I was just going to say there's so much about this 'news' that could be picked apart it's not worth the time... only to see pretty much every poster take the study at its word as scientific fact.
People, flimsy crap like this is released and publicized pretty much solely to attract Government grant money. Let's not get carried away here.
