Study links bee decline to cell phones

London, England (CNN) -- A new study has suggested that cell phone radiation may be contributing to declines in bee populations in some areas of the world.

Bee populations dropped 17 percent in the UK last year, according to the British Bee Association, and nearly 30 percent in the United States says the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Parasitic mites called varroa, agricultural pesticides and the effects of climate change have all been implicated in what has been dubbed "colony collapse disorder" (CCD).

But researchers in India believe cell phones could also be to blame for some of the losses.

In a study at Panjab University in Chandigarh, northern India, researchers fitted cell phones to a hive and powered them up for two fifteen-minute periods each day.

After three months, they found the bees stopped producing honey, egg production by the queen bee halved, and the size of the hive dramatically reduced.

But the UK's Mobile Operators Association -- which represents the UK's five mobile network operators -- told CNN: "Research scientists have already considered possible factors involved in CCD and have identified the areas for research into the causes of CCD which do not include exposure to radio waves."

i dunno man i've been watching the world cup and i think all this bee decline hysteria is way overhyped. if anything it seems like there are too many bees (yes, i know it's africa, but still)

I'm skeptical but at least this should be an easy hypothesis to test. Someone start a controlled experiment with bees & the wavelengths used by cell towers.
 
Remember when we're all scared of the killer bees migrating from Africa and killing us all in 90s?

and I think it was Fox who made that incredible made for tv movie with this one scene where theres just SO MANY BEES and the dude hides in the bath tub under water with a snorkel but theres TOO MANY BEES and they crawl down his snorkel and he chokes on BEES.
 
A long time ago at camp in elementary school, the Bee Man told us that without bees the only thing people would have to eat is salt.

Mobile phones are the work of Satan, if the Lord had meant us to talk to people who aren't there next to us, he would of given us bigger ears.

Maybe, but there's no way they're gonna do it for cheap like bees do.

Isn't this cell phone theory the initial theory to why bees are dying?

Lack of honey isn't really the problem if bees die out. The percentage of both crops and plants around the world which rely on bees for pollination is really quite high. TLDR: No more bees = worldwide famine.

i fully support a ban on all cell phones. Causes brain cancer AND is going to lead to worldwide famine? That thread where people likened cell phone usage to cigarette smoking is probably right. 30 years from now the kids are going to be amazed we were so stupid and just took things for granted.
 
I find it amusing that Arrested Development has ruined any potential serious discussion involving bees.
