I doubt it'll do the numbers of the first one, but I reckon it should do a billion at least. We'll see.

Anyway, a good film isn't judged by box office numbers.
Can agree with that, apparently it needs 2B to become profitable.

I'm guessing there will be an extensive Wim Hof style breath holding montague, hopefully set to some 80`s techno-synth, maybe Evangelis, as Jake Sully becomes a fish.

This should be intercut with an extensive sequence of the humans and Quaritch donning awesome military scuba gear.

Then they both, at the same time, say "It's the way of water...." cue BA BAH BAAAA horn section!

I'm Not sure it'll do those numbers. I really can't call it. People don't go to the cinema as much as they did in the past, yet Top Gun Maverick still made just shy of 1.5 billion at the box office, so who knows. Also, take into consideration that China was one of the reasons Avatar made so much money. The Chinese really love this franchise, so if it takes off in China then I can see it making 2B.

Cameron was referencing a budget conversation from a decade ago, when the first Avengers and Harry Potter were the third and fourth highest grossing movies.

The plot of Avatar is dreadful, and easily his worst movie in that respect. The film was a huge success due to the technology, not the story or characters.

The sequel wont just be able to ride on its visuals.

I'm not going to try and argue about opinion, because what's the point right? But it did make like three billion dollars or whatever so obviously the general audience enjoyed it. Movies are meant to entertain, they don't all need to be Akira Kurosawa film caliber to be considered enjoyable.

Edit: and yea maybe I am being a little reductive. But so are most arguments against Cameron's recent works. So whatever.

China B/O was no where near as big then as it is now. It only made 200 million at the time (not including re-releases, 260 with) which at the time was the best ever for a foreign film in China. Just a small piece of the 3 billion. If you don't include China, it still made over 2.7 billion. If you don't include the US or China, it still made over 2 billion elsewhere.

Since then in China it's been passed by Aquaman, Avengers (600 million), Fast & Furious, Transformers AOE, Venom, Zootopia, Jurassic World etc etc (not including re-release) due to how big China's market has become for movies since 2009.

This all favors Avatar 2. I see it ending up between 600-750 million in China, similar in the US. I don't see how it doesn't do 2 billion at this point w/ China in play.

Film producers... Do me a favor, remove the disgusting movie Strange world from the theaters and put the Avatar 2 in IMAX and 3d.
